Uber’s flying-taxi idea has evolved from a four-rider electric aircraft concept into a planned Uber Air service powered by Joby Aviation. The current aircraft concept has six tilting propellers, is designed to carry up to four passengers, and has a stated maximum range of up to 100 miles. A Dubai launch is expected later in 2026, but only if the aircraft and service meet certification requirements.
What would Uber’s flying taxi look like?
The original Uber concept was an electric eVTOL: an aircraft designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing. It was imagined as an app-requested ride for four people, using multiple propellers and relatively quiet electric motors. Rooftop facilities—later described as skyports—were part of the idea, connecting urban pickup and drop-off points with a short flight.
Uber’s current commercial plan is Uber Air powered by Joby. The Joby aircraft has six tilting propellers and is designed to carry up to four passengers. The tilting propellers are a defining visible feature: they support the aircraft’s transition between vertical flight and forward travel. Uber describes the booking experience as one-tap booking, but that does not mean the service is already available to book.

Uber Elevate’s published concept and the current Joby-powered plan describe different stages of the project. Their figures should not be treated as specifications for one unchanged aircraft.

The speed and range figures are stated maxima or thresholds for their respective stages, not promises about the speed or distance of a particular trip. The Elevate numbers and Joby numbers refer to separate descriptions, so the increase in the later figures should not be read as a measured improvement to the same aircraft under identical conditions.
What did Safran’s cabin mockup show?
Safran developed a full-scale Mission Driven Cabin mockup for an urban flight designed around a 15-minute journey. The cabin concept went through six iterations. It offers a view of how the passenger space might be arranged for a short ride, but it is a mockup—not evidence that a certified aircraft has been built with that cabin.

That distinction matters when asking what the flying taxi will actually look like. The mockup illustrates a cabin design exercise, while the current commercial plan is tied to Joby’s aircraft and its six tilting propellers. The available details do not establish that Safran’s mockup is the final cabin for the Joby aircraft.

Is Uber’s flying taxi real, and when can you book one?
It is a real commercial plan, but the available information does not establish that Uber Air is already carrying passengers or open for general booking. The stated target is Dubai service later in 2026, conditional on certification. Until that condition is met and service is actually launched, one-tap booking describes the intended experience rather than a ride a customer can currently reserve.

The practical answer is therefore: the design direction is clearer than it was in Uber’s first concept, but a planned service and aircraft specifications are not the same as a certified, operating taxi network. No confirmed public booking date is stated.
