Donald Trump’s real-estate portfolio includes prominent New York projects, hotels and mixed-use towers, and golf resorts. But “built” covers several different roles: developing new construction, converting or renovating existing properties, acquiring businesses, and operating or branding properties developed by others. The Trump Organization’s own history identifies many projects, but it is not a complete independent inventory—and it does not establish an audited total of square footage Trump personally built.

How to read Trump’s building record

Trump began working in his father Fred Trump’s New York real-estate business before moving into Manhattan development, according to the Trump Organization’s undated biography. In that biography, Donald Trump says, “My father was my mentor, and I learned a tremendous amount about every aspect of the construction industry from him.” The company does not give the quotation’s date or original setting.

A property associated with Trump’s name is not automatically a building he constructed from the ground up. Some projects were conversions or renovations; others were acquisitions, developments involving partners, or operating and branding arrangements. The distinctions matter when describing what he “built.”

New York: development, conversion and acquisition

Manhattan towers and other named properties

The Trump Organization’s biography identifies Trump Tower, Trump Parc, Trump Palace, Trump Plaza, Trump World Tower, Trump Park Avenue and 610 Park Avenue among its New York properties. It also describes Trump’s role in the designation and construction of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on land he controlled. These are company accounts of the portfolio; the biography does not provide a project-by-project independent audit of construction roles.

Grand Hyatt New York: a hotel conversion

The Grand Hyatt New York came from the conversion of the existing Commodore Hotel, not from building a new hotel on an empty site. The Trump Organization’s biography also credits the project with restoration of Grand Central Terminal’s exterior. It is therefore an example of redevelopment and restoration, rather than wholly new construction.

Trump Place: a large waterfront development

The Trump Organization describes Trump Place as a development on the former West Side rail yards. Its biography says the site had 16 buildings and that Trump built the first nine—not all 16. The same company account says he donated a 25-acre waterfront park and a 700-foot pier.

Properties acquired or renovated

The company biography describes the Plaza Hotel as acquired and renovated, and 40 Wall Street as an acquisition. Those descriptions do not mean Trump originally built either property.

Hotels and mixed-use projects beyond Manhattan

Chicago: residential, hotel and retail in one tower

The Trump Organization’s undated biography describes the Chicago tower as 92 stories and 2.7 million square feet — The Trump Organization, undated biography. It says the project was announced in 2001 and that the hotel opened in January 2008. The tower’s combination of residential, hotel and retail uses makes it a mixed-use project, rather than a single-purpose hotel.

Other hotel and residential properties

The same company biography lists a Las Vegas hotel-condominium tower and properties in Waikiki, Doral and Ireland. The roles vary across projects—development, ownership, operation or branding—and that list alone does not establish the present-day ownership or operating status of each property.

Golf courses and resorts: construction, improvement and acquisition

Trump International Golf Links Scotland

The New York Attorney General-hosted 2023 disclosure says the project’s first phase opened in 2012 with a golf course and practice facilities. MacLeod House & Lodge opened in 2013, followed by the clubhouse in 2015. The filing says a second phase, including another course and proposed amenities, received planning permission in 2019. Permission is not evidence that the second phase was completed.

Turnberry and Doonbeg

The same 2023 disclosure says Trump-associated entities acquired Turnberry in 2014. It also says Doonbeg’s course officially opened in 2002, before Trump-associated entities bought the property in 2014. These properties belong in a history of acquisitions and subsequent resort operations or transformations, not among courses Trump originated and built from scratch.

Doral and Ferry Point

Trump Golf’s undated company history says it transformed Doral’s Blue Monster in 2014 by changing its length, hazards, greens and risk-reward features. For Ferry Point, the company says the course was completed under the organization’s leadership between 2015 and 2023 and describes a 20,000-square-foot clubhouse — Trump Golf, undated history. These are company descriptions of improvement and project leadership.

Projects announced or underway are not completed buildings

Vietnam

The Trump Organization’s 2025 year-end letter says Trump International Vietnam broke ground in May 2025. Associated Press reported in May 2025 that Vietnam had approved a proposed $1.5 billion — project proposal reported by Associated Press, 2025 — golf and residential project spanning 990 hectares, with work expected to continue through 2029. The $1.5 billion figure describes the proposal, not verified spending on a completed project.

Maldives and other international projects

The Trump Organization’s 2025 year-end letter announced a Maldives hotel with an intended opening by the end of 2028. The same company letter described projects in Indonesia, Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia as underway. These are announced or in-progress ventures according to the company at that time; they should not be counted as completed buildings, and the stated opening target may change.

What the record establishes—and what it does not

The available accounts support a representative history spanning Manhattan development, adaptive reuse, acquisitions, hotel and residential projects, and golf-resort operations. They do not establish a comprehensive independent inventory of every property or an audited total of square footage personally built by Trump. Company biographies and histories are useful for identifying projects and describing the organization’s account of its role, but they should not be mistaken for independent verification of every claim.
