Dress for the forecast, and bring a removable layer if temperatures may shift. For cool weather, pack a warm coat; in heat, choose breathable clothing and sun protection. For light rain, a packable poncho is a practical option, but check your ballpark’s umbrella and bag rules before you go. Rain alone does not determine whether a game will be played, so check the team’s official updates.
Choose clothing for the forecast
There is no single outfit that suits every baseball game: conditions depend on the season and location. Fenway Park’s guide, for example, notes that New England can bring both a spring chill and hot summer weather. Use the local forecast for the game rather than assuming the season tells the whole story.
Cool or changeable weather
Bring a warm coat or another removable layer when the forecast calls for cool temperatures. A layer you can take off is useful if the weather warms during the game. Fenway’s guide specifically recommends a warm coat for an early-spring chill.
Hot, sunny weather
Choose comfortable, breathable clothing and plan for sun protection. Fenway’s guide notes that its standard seats do not have air conditioning; that detail is specific to Fenway and should not be assumed of other ballparks.

What to wear when rain is possible
Light rain: consider a packable poncho
A packable poncho can be handy in light rain. WBUR’s Fenway guide says it is less obtrusive to nearby fans than an umbrella. That is practical advice, not a guarantee that every stadium requires or prefers ponchos. The available venue guidance does not establish a best waterproof rating, fabric, or rainwear performance comparison.
Umbrellas: check the ballpark’s rule
Do not assume you can bring or open an umbrella in the stands. Policies differ, and obstructed views are a concern. Nationals Park allows small collapsible umbrellas that fit within its permitted bag size, but they may be refused if they block sightlines or inconvenience others. Busch Stadium allows umbrellas when they do not interfere with other guests’ views. Check the destination park’s current policy before packing one.

Check bag rules before packing
Rain gear has to fit the venue’s entry rules as well as the weather. The examples below show why bag dimensions should be checked for the specific park rather than treated as a league-wide standard.

Check game status if rain is forecast
Rain in the forecast does not by itself mean a game will be canceled, and no universal rain threshold determines what happens. The Salt Lake Bees say their decisions can depend on rain already received, the forecast, expected duration and severity, field conditions, and safety. Those factors describe the Bees’ policy, not every team’s procedure.
The Bees distinguish a rain delay, when play resumes later that day, from a postponement or suspended game. For your game, follow the team or ballpark’s official alerts for the latest status and its own policy. See the Salt Lake Bees visitor guide for its published explanation.
