Wear comfortable, adjustable layers, pants and flat, closed-toe shoes. Plan for time outdoors before launch and after landing, and check your operator’s rules before bringing anything into the basket. The right choices depend on local weather, launch time and the operator’s requirements.
What should you wear on a hot-air balloon ride?
Dress in adjustable layers
Choose layers you can add or remove as temperatures change. A dawn launch may mean waiting outdoors in cooler conditions, while the morning can warm later; evening flights can cool as they progress. The FAA’s Balloon Flying Handbook advises balloon crew to wear layers because temperatures can change between before sunrise and recovery. That passage is crew guidance, not a universal passenger dress code. Check the forecast for your location and follow your operator’s advice.
Choose pants and practical footwear
Pants are a practical passenger choice for stepping into and out of the basket. Wear comfortable, flat, closed-toe shoes suitable for being outdoors. Passenger operators recommend this type of footwear, and one makes closed-toe shoes mandatory for its passengers. Requirements differ, so confirm yours with the operator rather than assuming every company has the same rule.
You may spend time on the ground as well as in the air. One operator says passengers may be invited to help with setup and packing away; the FAA handbook notes that balloon crew may need to walk or hike from landing sites inaccessible to chase vehicles. These are reasons to favor clothes and shoes that are comfortable for outdoor activity, not an indication that every passenger will be asked to help.

What should you bring?
Keep your belongings compact, and ask the operator what is permitted in the basket. A camera is an optional suggestion from one operator, not a universal requirement. The same operator suggests hearing protection for passengers with sensitive hearing. Neither item should be treated as part of a standard required packing list; the available operator advice does not establish a universal camera or equipment restriction.
- Bring only items your operator allows.
- If you want to take a camera, check whether it is permitted and comfortable to carry.
- If you have sensitive hearing, ask whether hearing protection is appropriate for your flight.
Check the operator’s instructions and flight updates
Passenger requirements come from the operator running your ride. Ask about footwear, permitted belongings and any other service-specific instructions before you leave. The FAA handbook describes pilots using weather information to decide whether to delay or cancel when winds are too strong or unstable. A scheduled flight is not a guarantee of launch, so monitor the operator’s updates on the day.
