Wear adjustable layers and bring proper rain protection—even for a summer climb. Mount Fuji’s summit can be near 0°C before sunrise, and wind can make it feel colder than the trailhead. Pack quick-drying base layers, warm insulation, separate waterproof jacket and pants, sturdy hiking boots, and essentials you can reach without unpacking your bag. Check the rules and forecast for your specific route and climb date.
Why summer clothing is not enough
Conditions change sharply between the trailhead and the summit. Mount Fuji rises to 3,776 m, and the official climbing site gives a general guide of about 0.6°C lower temperature for each 100 m of elevation gain. It also gives an approximate perceived-temperature drop of 1.0°C for every 1 m/s of wind. These are rules of thumb, not a route-specific forecast, but they help explain why a warm start does not mean you can leave insulation behind.
The official site warns that summit temperatures can approach 0°C before sunrise, even in summer. Its safety advice is to dress in layers that can be adjusted as temperature, weather, and exertion change. The climb is exposed to sun as well as cold: limited tree shade raises the risk of overheating, dehydration, and sun exposure during the ascent.
What clothing to pack
Base layer: manage sweat
Choose quick-drying underwear and base layers. The official climbing diary recommends moisture-wicking, quick-drying material; clothing that stays wet can leave you cold when you slow down or reach an exposed, windy section. If a layer becomes wet and you have a dry change available, change when practical.

Insulation: bring warmth you can add
Pack a warm mid layer such as fleece, plus a warmer insulated option such as a down jacket for colder conditions or a long stop. The official checklist also includes gloves and a neck warmer. Keep these layers near the top of your pack so you can add them without a lengthy unpacking break.
Outer layer: separate rain jacket and pants
Bring waterproof mountaineering rainwear as a jacket and pants, rather than relying on a simple vinyl raincoat. The official FAQ warns that vinyl raincoats can tear in strong winds and recommends preparing separate-type rain gear in advance. Rainwear also provides wind protection, which matters when exposed at altitude.

Footwear: supportive boots in sound condition
Wear hiking boots with a high cut or stiff sole, as specified by the official equipment checklist. Check the boots before departure, especially if they are old: the official FAQ warns that soles can deteriorate and notes there are no repair facilities on the mountain. Wear footwear you have already checked for fit and condition rather than discovering a problem on the route.

Protect against sun, wind, and dehydration
Wear a wide-brimmed hat that covers the back of your head, and secure it with a chin strap because wind can blow it away. Use sunglasses and sunscreen where appropriate; the official site warns that tree shade is limited. Drink regularly. Its health guidance gives 1.2 L per day as a guideline, while its equipment checklist calls for carrying 1–2 L. Neither amount fits every person or condition: route, weather, exertion, and opportunities to refill affect what you need.
Adjust clothing as the climb and descent change. Add insulation when you stop or conditions turn cold; remove layers as needed during a warmer, more strenuous descent so you do not overheat.

For the 2026 season, the official Yoshida Trail notice says equipment is checked at the 5th station and names cold-weather clothing, two-piece rain gear, and appropriate climbing footwear. It says people without required equipment may not use the descending trail. This is specific to the Yoshida Trail guidance for 2026; do not assume it applies unchanged to every trail or future season.

Common packing questions
What should I wear to climb Mount Fuji in summer?
Use quick-drying base layers, a warm layer, and waterproof rain jacket and pants. Add gloves and a neck warmer for cold conditions, and carry sun protection. Summer at the trailhead does not remove the need to prepare for near-freezing summit conditions before sunrise.
Can I buy rain gear at a mountain hut if I forget it?
The official FAQ says vinyl raincoats may be available for purchase at mountain huts, but they are not very useful in strong winds. It recommends preparing separate mountaineering rainwear in advance rather than counting on a hut purchase as a substitute.
Can I change clothes or wash my face at a mountain hut?
Facilities vary by hut, and water is scarce, according to the official FAQ. Do not plan on a full change or washing facilities being available; pack the clothing you need and check with your booked hut about its facilities.
