Watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Rebellion- immediately before Walpurgisnacht Rising. If you have not seen the original story, first watch the 2011 Puella Magi Madoka Magica TV series—or use the two recap films, Beginnings and Eternal, as an alternative. Magia Record is a side story, not a required stop on this direct-sequel path.

Choose between the series and the recap films
The first decision is about presentation, not two different sequel routes. The TV series is the original 2011 telling, presented episodically. Beginnings and Eternal condense that story into two theatrical films. The U.S. distributor describes them as a two-part retelling and identifies Rebellion as the third film.

The official Japanese promotional copy calls the film a legitimate sequel to Rebellion and “a new beginning” (translation). The sequel wording is the useful part for watch-order purposes: it points back to a specific film, rather than just to the franchise generally. You do not need to interpret the “new beginning” phrase as a replacement for the earlier story or as an invitation to skip Rebellion.
The official synopsis for Walpurgisnacht Rising points toward Homura, a changed world, the return of magical girls and a conflict involving Walpurgisnacht. Those details signal that the new film carries forward the situation established by Rebellion. To avoid having the follow-up’s setup revealed in advance, it is better to watch Rebellion before reading detailed plot summaries of the new film.

For the same reason, a spoiler-light preparation plan can be very simple: watch the original story in one of its two supported formats, watch Rebellion, and leave detailed summaries of Walpurgisnacht Rising until after you see it. The official synopsis includes plot setup, but the watch-order answer does not require repeating later story details. If you are trying to arrive with as little revealed as possible, avoid extended plot descriptions and stick to the titles and order above.
Is Magia Record required?

In particular, do not treat Magia Record as an alternate way to catch up on the original story. The official portal’s distinction is between a side story and the sequel relationship linking Rebellion with Walpurgisnacht Rising. If you have watched Magia Record but not the original series or its recap films, the main-story route is still the one to follow.

Release plans depend on territory and format. The dates below reflect official announcements available as of October 13, 2026; a theatrical date or announced streaming debut does not establish that a title remains available in a service’s catalog later.
Japan
The official Japanese site lists August 28, 2026 as the theatrical release date for Walpurgisnacht Rising. Its October 2026 notices also include theater-related information. These Japanese details do not establish a release date or screening availability in other countries.
United States
Aniplex of America and Fathom announced an exclusive U.S. theatrical window for Walpurgisnacht Rising from January 16 through January 19, 2027, in both subtitled and English-dubbed formats. The announcement says tickets would go on sale December 11, 2026. These are announced U.S. dates, not a statement about screenings in other territories.
The same announcement lists U.S. streaming debut dates for the existing trilogy: Crunchyroll on November 8, 2026, and Netflix on January 2, 2027. LATAM Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese dubs were announced for November 15, 2026. These are announced debuts, not a guarantee of continuing availability; check the relevant service and territory when you plan to watch.

Aniplex of America announced a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray collection containing Beginnings, Eternal and Rebellion. The announcement lists October 15, 2026 as the retail date and a standard retail price of $149.98, as reported by Fathom Entertainment in 2026. That is an announced standard price, not a statement of current retailer pricing, stock or availability. The set’s listed contents cover the recap films and Rebellion; the announcement does not list Walpurgisnacht Rising in the package.
For someone who wants physical access to the film-format catch-up and its direct sequel, the trilogy collection is the relevant announced package. Its contents are specifically the two retelling films plus Rebellion, not the 2011 TV series and not the new movie. Before buying, verify a live retailer listing, current price, stock and region compatibility; the announced retail price of $149.98 is not a guarantee of what a store currently charges.
A simple route based on what you have already seen
- Seen the TV series, not Rebellion: watch Rebellion, then Walpurgisnacht Rising.
- Seen neither the TV series nor the recap films: watch the TV series, or watch both Beginnings and Eternal; then watch Rebellion and the new film.

That last-but-one situation is the only one where you might pause before continuing: if you have seen Rebellion without the original story, you can fill in the earlier context with the series or recap films. The first two theatrical titles—Beginnings and Eternal—retell the original TV story. Rebellion is the continuation. Likewise, the presence of several franchise works does not make every one a prerequisite for this film. For this specific path, focus on the original story and Rebellion; add other works only if you want to explore beyond the direct continuation.
If you are choosing a route for a group, agree on the original-story format first: everyone can watch the TV series, or everyone can watch both recap films. Then put Rebellion directly before Walpurgisnacht Rising.
