For the fastest, most relevant preparation, watch What If…? season 1, episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!” and then start Marvel Zombies. Disney describes that episode as the inspiration for the animated series’ dystopian world, but the new show is not a direct continuation of the episode’s cliffhanger. You can also begin Marvel Zombies with no preparation: Marvel Television and Marvel Animation executive producer Brad Winderbaum says viewers can come to the story without knowing the wider MCU lore.
No MCU movie is established as required viewing. Movies such as Avengers: Infinity War are optional character or timeline context only, and a complete MCU rewatch would add time without being necessary for understanding the four-part event.

Choose the viewing path that fits you
Disney’s official guidance supports three sensible routes. The first gives you the closest connection in a single episode; the second skips all preparation; the third adds optional familiarity for viewers who enjoy recognizing MCU characters and timeline references.

| No preparation | Nothing | The series supplies the information needed for its own story | Anyone who wants to start immediately |
| Optional character context | The episode above, with Avengers: Infinity War only if you want additional MCU familiarity | More background for recognizing characters and timeline references | Committed MCU viewers who enjoy extra connective detail |
These are practical choices, not an official marathon order. Disney has not prescribed a complete movie-and-series sequence for Marvel Zombies.
#1 Best Overall
The best primer: What If…? season 1, episode 5
The closest screen connection is the fifth episode of the first season of Marvel’s animated anthology, officially titled “What If… Zombies?!” Disney’s episode summary establishes an alternate-event premise in which the familiar MCU world is transformed by a zombie outbreak. The episode is the source of the dystopian setting that Marvel Zombies expands. Read the official episode description at Disney Plus Press.
Watch the episode when you want a quick orientation to the kind of world the new series inhabits: recognizable heroes, a catastrophic infection and survival under radically different rules from the main MCU timeline. It is useful because it shows the idea in motion rather than asking you to learn the premise from a synopsis.
There is an important boundary, however. Disney’s behind-the-scenes feature says Marvel Zombies expands the dystopian world first seen in “What If… Zombies?!” while clarifying that the series does not directly continue that episode’s cliffhanger. Treat the episode as a thematic and world-building primer, not as episode one of a single uninterrupted plot. The relationship is best described as “inspired by and expanding the world,” not “picks up immediately afterward.”
You can start Marvel Zombies without any MCU homework
If you have not watched What If…?, you are still within the intended audience. Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation, tells The Walt Disney Company: “You don’t need to know the lore to enjoy it; you’ll get what you need from just watching this one story, which makes it inviting. You can come to it completely blind… and still get it.”
Rank #2
That statement makes the no-preparation route more than a shortcut. It means the series is designed to establish its own stakes and character relationships instead of assuming that every viewer remembers years of MCU continuity. Start directly with Marvel Zombies if you prefer discovering the setting through the series itself, or if you are watching with people who do not follow the wider franchise.
Beginning without preparation also avoids a common mistake: treating every MCU title connected by a character, actor or timeline reference as mandatory. The available official guidance does not make such a requirement.
Are any MCU movies required?
No. No MCU movie is identified by Disney’s official material as essential preparation for Marvel Zombies. The producer’s standalone-viewing guidance supports skipping a movie marathon entirely.
Avengers: Infinity War can be considered optional context because the series’ director, writer and executive producer Bryan Andrews discussed Kamala Khan in relation to the timelines of What If…? and Avengers: Infinity War. His comment explains a development decision about where Kamala fit, but it does not turn the movie into required homework. If you have already seen Infinity War, that familiarity may make the broader MCU timeline feel more recognizable; watching it solely to understand the animated series is unnecessary.
Rank #3
Do not add other MCU films simply to make your checklist look complete. The official sources reviewed do not prescribe a longer list, and adding titles without a direct preparation benefit creates the impression that viewers must complete a franchise course before they can enjoy a four-part animated story.
What the series is, and where it fits
Marvel Zombies is a four-part Marvel Animation event series. Disney’s official listing gives its premiere date as September 24, 2025, and identifies Disney+ as the streaming destination. The company’s series feature also describes the project as a TV-MA adventure. See the four-part announcement at Disney Video.
The TV-MA rating is a practical viewing consideration, not a continuity clue. Expect a more mature presentation than a general-audience animated show, and check your household’s suitability before pressing play.

Streaming catalogs can differ by country and can change over time, so the presence of a Disney+ page does not guarantee identical availability in every region on every date.
Step-by-step watch plans
Plan A: the one-episode primer
- Open What If…? season 1 and select episode 5, “What If… Zombies?!”
- Watch the episode for its alternate-world premise and zombie-survival setup.
- Start Marvel Zombies on Disney+.
- Keep in mind that the new series expands the setting but does not directly resolve the earlier episode’s cliffhanger.
This is the strongest choice when you want meaningful context with the least additional viewing.
Plan B: go in completely cold
- Open the official Marvel Zombies title page on Disney+.
- Begin episode one without watching another MCU title.
- Let the series introduce its own version of the world and its survivors.
Winderbaum’s guidance specifically supports this route. It is also the cleanest option for a first-time MCU viewer or a group watch in which not everyone knows the franchise.
Plan C: optional MCU familiarity
- Watch “What If… Zombies?!” as the direct screen primer.
- Add Avengers: Infinity War only if you want the extra MCU timeline familiarity discussed by the creators.
- Move to Marvel Zombies rather than expanding the list into a full MCU rewatch.
This plan is for completion-minded fans, not a requirement imposed by the series. The added movie is a preference-based supplement.
Why Kamala Khan matters to the optional route
Disney identifies Kamala Khan as a pivotal survivor in Marvel Zombies. That makes her the most useful reason to consider extra character familiarity, but it still does not create a prerequisite. The series is written to provide the information a new viewer needs about her role within this story.
Best Value
In the same Disney feature, Bryan Andrews says: “When we were developing this, Kamala was relatively new to the MCU. Based on the timeline of What If…? and Avengers: Infinity War, she was in a perfect spot.” The comment describes how the creators positioned Kamala during development; it is not an instruction to watch every title associated with that timeline. If you already know Kamala from other MCU stories, you may appreciate her appearance more quickly, while viewers meeting the character here can follow the series on its own terms.
Common viewing-order mistakes to avoid
- Calling the primer mandatory: “What If… Zombies?!” is the closest connection, not required homework.
- Expecting a direct cliffhanger continuation: the new series expands the dystopian world without directly continuing the earlier episode’s unresolved ending.
- Building an entire MCU checklist: no official source reviewed names a movie marathon as necessary.
- Ignoring the rating: Marvel Zombies is identified as TV-MA, so consider whether its mature content is appropriate for your household.
- Assuming identical streaming access everywhere: Disney+ availability may vary by region and date.
Should you read the Marvel Zombies comics first?
The comics are an optional companion, not screen-viewing preparation. Marvel maintains an official Marvel Zombies reading list documenting the comics line and its place in Marvel’s universe. Reading that material can provide more background on the broader comics concept, but the animated series’ producer explicitly says prior lore is unnecessary.
Keep the two experiences separate: choose the comics if you want additional Marvel Zombies history, and choose “What If… Zombies?!” if you want the closest on-screen introduction before the Disney+ series. Neither choice changes the fact that Marvel Zombies is designed to stand on its own.
