If Lanterns appealed because it combines a murder investigation, uneasy superhero mythology and a cosmic backdrop, start with Watchmen for mystery inside a superhero world or The Expanse for broader interplanetary politics. Fringe, Legion and For All Mankind are more specialized alternatives: investigative science fiction, stylized superhero strangeness, and institutional speculative drama.
None is a scene-for-scene substitute. The useful comparison is which ingredient you want to keep: the case, the mythology, the scale, the partner dynamic or the long-range institutional stakes.

Why Lanterns makes an unusual comparison point
HBO Max’s March 5, 2026 press-room announcement describes Lanterns this way: “The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” The series is a DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television production based on DC’s Green Lantern characters. Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King are credited as co-creators, with Mundy serving as showrunner.

That premise creates a deliberate tension between a familiar crime-story shape and a much larger mythology. DC’s trailer-era overview presents an Earthbound investigation while pointing toward ring constructs, alien settings and the Manhunters. Those are promotional indications of the show’s ingredients, not a complete description of every episode.
#1 Best Overall
Reviewers have emphasized the same contrast from different angles. TechRadar characterizes the released series as a grounded rural crime drama with cosmic stakes, slow-burn plotting, police-procedural tendencies and a tense buddy-cop relationship. The Daily Beast highlights a mystery, partner comedy, superhero-origin elements and movement between time periods. Those are critics’ assessments, so they are best treated as tonal guidance rather than official genre labels.
Use that combination as your filter: a local case, two investigators with different levels of experience, superhero mythology and a wider science-fiction universe. The recommendations below preserve some of those elements while changing others on purpose.
Quick guide: choose by the part of Lanterns you want to keep
| Series | Best for viewers who want | What carries over | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watchmen | A mystery inside a superhero setting | Investigation, mythology and social unease | No equivalent space-cop partnership or cosmic scale |
| The Expanse | Interplanetary scope and political tension | Cosmic setting, competing interests and science-fiction institutions | Not a duplicate of an Earth-based murder case |
| Fringe | Case-driven speculative mystery | Investigations with a science-fiction layer | Less direct emphasis on superhero mythology |
| Legion | Strange, stylized superhero science fiction | Superhero concepts and unusual genre ideas | Far less conventional as a police or partner procedural |
| For All Mankind | Institutional and historical speculative drama | Science-fiction stakes and long-view consequences | More adjacent than tonally similar to the Lanterns investigation |
1. Watchmen: the closest match for mystery inside superhero mythology
Why it fits
Watchmen is the strongest choice if the part of Lanterns that interests you most is an investigation unfolding in a world where extraordinary powers and superhero history have changed the social atmosphere. The recommendation source identifies it specifically as a mystery within superhero mythology, with an uneasy social tone.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This makes it a better match for the show’s investigative and thematic side than for its intergalactic setting. Both titles invite you to ask how a case is shaped by the mythology surrounding the characters, rather than treating the mystery as an isolated puzzle. In each comparison, the world’s history and power structures matter to the investigation.
What not to expect
Watchmen does not replicate Lanterns’ two-person space-cop setup or its blend of an American heartland case with a cosmic backdrop. Choose it for superhero-world mystery and social unease, not for ring constructs, alien environments or a buddy-police rhythm.
Choose it when
- You want the investigation to reveal uncomfortable truths about a superhero society.
- You prefer thematic tension and mythology over a broad interplanetary canvas.
- You are comfortable with a show that treats superhero ideas as socially and politically unsettling.
2. The Expanse: the pick for cosmic scale and political tension
Why it fits
If the cosmic side of Lanterns is what you want to pursue, move to The Expanse. The comparison source points to its interplanetary canvas, political tensions and competing interests—features that expand the scale suggested by Lanterns’ wider mythology.

The attraction here is systems rather than a single local case. Instead of using the larger universe mainly as pressure around an Earthbound murder investigation, The Expanse makes the relationships among places, institutions and factions central to the drama. That gives you a richer follow-up if you are more interested in how science-fiction societies collide than in the details of a partner investigation.

This is not a replacement for the rural-crime component of Lanterns. Its recommendation value lies in scale and political friction, not in reproducing the same murder plot, superhero-origin elements or buddy-cop tone.
Choose it when
- You want the story to keep widening beyond one planet or community.
- Political tensions and competing interests appeal more than a contained procedural.
- You want science-fiction institutions and world-building to carry as much weight as character mystery.
3. Fringe: case-driven science-fiction mystery
Why it fits
Fringe is the practical choice for viewers who primarily want investigations with a speculative science-fiction layer. The recommendation source includes it as a case-driven mystery option, making it useful when the “new case, strange implications” structure is more important to you than superhero continuity or cosmic politics.
That overlap is structural rather than literal. You can expect the recommendation to satisfy the desire for investigative momentum and science-fiction questions, but the available comparison does not establish a close character match, plot match or equivalent mythology. Treat it as a neighboring lane: procedural curiosity with speculative ideas.
What not to expect
Do not select Fringe because you want a Green Lantern-style heroic mythology or an intergalactic partnership. Its appeal in this list is the investigative engine and the speculative frame.

- You want mysteries to arrive as cases that carry a science-fiction explanation or complication.
- You favor investigation over superhero iconography.
- You want a more direct procedural route after Lanterns’ crime-story elements.
4. Legion: superhero mythology in a stranger, more stylized key
Why it fits
Legion belongs on the list for viewers who enjoyed the idea of superhero mythology but want it presented in an unusual science-fiction style. The comparison source describes it as a secondary option for a stranger, more stylized approach rather than a conventional police procedural.

That difference can be an advantage. Lanterns uses a grounded investigation to anchor extraordinary material; Legion is the choice when you want the extraordinary material itself to become the dominant experience. It keeps the superhero and speculative ingredients while moving away from the straightforward “partners investigate a murder” framework.
What not to expect
The available comparison does not support a detailed claim that its characters, cases or plot mechanics mirror Lanterns. Go in for tone, formal experimentation and unusual superhero science fiction—not for a rural procedural or a direct continuation of cosmic police mythology.
Choose it when
- You want superhero concepts handled in an unconventional, highly stylized way.
- You prefer strangeness and subjective genre ideas to procedural realism.
- You are willing to trade the clear case structure for a more distinctive science-fiction sensibility.
5. For All Mankind: speculative drama with institutional and historical scope
Why it fits
For All Mankind is the most adjacent recommendation. It suits viewers who respond to the speculative-drama side of Lanterns and want institutions, history and long-term consequences to shape the story. The comparison source places it in this broader science-fiction and institutional category, while offering less evidence of a close tonal or plot match.

Rather than following the ingredients of a superhero investigation, you are choosing a drama interested in how large organizations and historical developments influence people and decisions. That can satisfy the desire for consequential science fiction without pretending that the two shows share the same structure.
What not to expect
This is not the pick for a murder mystery, a superhero partnership or a cosmic police story. Its relevance is the institutional and historical dimension of speculative drama.
Choose it when
- You want science fiction grounded in organizations, policy and historical change.
- You prefer a long-view drama to a contained investigation.
- You are looking for an adjacent recommendation rather than a close tonal substitute.
How to decide in five minutes
- Identify your anchor. If it is the murder investigation, begin with Watchmen or Fringe. If it is the wider universe, begin with The Expanse.
- Choose your mythology level. Pick Watchmen for superhero mythology with social unease, Legion for a more stylized version, or The Expanse and For All Mankind for science-fiction institutions rather than superhero lore.
- Decide how grounded you want the tone. The rural-crime and police-procedural side of Lanterns points toward Watchmen or Fringe. A willingness to leave conventional procedure behind points toward Legion.
- Choose partnership or systems. The tense two-investigator dynamic described by TechRadar favors Watchmen as a thematic companion. If ensembles, factions and institutions interest you more, choose The Expanse or For All Mankind.
- Set your expectation correctly. Start the selected series as a variation on one ingredient of Lanterns, not as a replacement with the same plot.
A viewing path based on mood
If you want the nearest thematic handoff
Start with Watchmen. It keeps the investigation, superhero mythology and uneasy social atmosphere in the same conversation, while changing the setting and partnership structure.

If you want another investigation
Choose Fringe. Its value is the case-driven science-fiction format, not a direct superhero parallel.
If you want something deliberately strange
Choose Legion. It is the clearest departure from procedural expectations while retaining superhero and speculative ingredients.
If you want institutions and history
Choose For All Mankind. It is the furthest from the central mystery but the most useful for a long-view speculative drama.
What to know about availability
Streaming catalogs change by country, service and date. The available material does not establish current, country-by-country availability for any of these series, so check the services offered in your region on the day you plan to watch. A service’s catalog can also differ between subscription tiers and change without notice.
Optional source material
If the Green Lantern mythology is the part you want to explore rather than another television series, official Green Lantern comic collections are the natural companion reading. Lanterns is based on DC’s Green Lantern characters, and DC’s overview provides context for elements such as ring constructs, alien settings and the Manhunters. Verify the exact collection, edition and regional availability before purchasing; no particular edition or price is established here.
