For the existing games, play Resident Evil 4, then Resident Evil 5, then Resident Evil 6. RE5 before RE6 is the key continuity choice; RE4 is a useful lead-in, not a formal prerequisite. As of October 7, 2026, Capcom has announced a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake for 2027, but has not confirmed remakes of RE5 or RE6 in the sources available here. If you are new to the series, Capcom USA staff recommends starting with Resident Evil 2 (2019).
What order should you play Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6?
The most practical route through this numbered-game stretch is Resident Evil 4 → Resident Evil 5 → Resident Evil 6. This puts the games in a straightforward order and preserves the clearest continuity link: Capcom USA’s official recap says RE6 follows incidents after RE5 and features returning characters. Capcom USA’s 2015 series recap is the source for that relationship.

Including RE4 is an editorial recommendation to add another numbered-series installment before RE5. It is not a claim that RE4 is required to understand either later game.
Which route should you choose?
| Route | Continuity and character context | Newcomer accessibility | Time commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 4 → 5 → 6 | Provides the recommended numbered-entry sequence, with RE5 immediately before RE6. | Best if you already know the series or want to focus on these games. | Three games; no playtime figures are established here. |
| Resident Evil 2 (2019) → 4 → 5 → 6 | Adds an earlier series entry before the recommended numbered-game sequence. | Strong choice for newcomers: Capcom USA staff recommends RE2 (2019) as a jumping-on point. | Four games; no playtime figures are established here. |
| Explore Revelations entries as well | May offer more series material, but their necessity and exact placement are not established by the accessible official text cited here. | For players who want to explore beyond the numbered route. | Additional games; no playtime figures are established here. |
For the shortest numbered-game route
Choose RE4, RE5, then RE6. This keeps the recommendation focused while placing the direct RE5-to-RE6 continuity link in order.

If you are new to Resident Evil
Start with RE2 (2019), then continue with RE4, RE5, and RE6. Capcom USA staff wrote: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” The guide attributes that recommendation to staff collectively, not to a named individual. Read Capcom USA’s Resident Evil: Where to Play guide.
If you want more lore
You can explore the Revelations games, but the accessible official sources cited here do not establish that they are necessary before RE5 or RE6, or give a definitive placement for them. Treat them as optional exploration rather than inserting them into a required order.

- Familiar Faces and Fresh Foes – Resident Evil series hero Chris Redfield returns under a shroud of seemingly sinister motives. Ethan will also encounter a host of new adversaries inhabiting the enigmatic village, all with their own distinctive attacks.
Do I need to play Resident Evil 4 before RE5?
No formal requirement is established. RE4 is a useful lead-in if you want another numbered entry before RE5, but the recommended order should not be mistaken for a prerequisite list.

Can I skip straight to Resident Evil 6?
You can choose to start with RE6, but playing RE5 first gives you the more direct context for the events and returning characters described in Capcom USA’s recap. If you are new to the franchise and want an entry point before this pair, Capcom USA staff recommends RE2 (2019).
