Play Persona 4 Golden if you want one game before Persona 4 Revival. SEGA describes Revival as a remake of Golden, which is itself an expanded version of the original Persona 4. The original is optional: choose it if you specifically want to compare the earlier release or explore the series’ history.
Why Persona 4 Golden is the best single choice
The clearest reason is the relationship SEGA gives the games: its June 8, 2026 announcement calls Persona 4 Revival a remake of Persona 4 Golden. SEGA’s announcement also describes enhanced graphics, UI, combat, and cutscenes. Playing Golden therefore gives you the version the remake is explicitly based on, without requiring you to play the original first.

Golden adds to the original’s content. In its historical announcement for the European PlayStation Vita release, NIS America described it as an enhanced and extended version of Persona 4, naming new story events and a new character, new Personas, anime cutscenes, remastered visuals, an online dungeon-rescue feature, and 1.5 times the amount of voiced dialogue found in the original. NIS America’s announcement is useful for identifying those additions; its Vita release context does not mean that the Vita is the only platform for Golden.
Do you need to play the original Persona 4 first?
No. The official descriptions do not say the original is a prerequisite, and Golden is an expanded version of its story rather than a separate starting point you must approach after the original. If you are choosing one playthrough for story familiarity before Revival, start with Golden.

- Both Major & Minor Arcana
- Rigid Storage Box w/ Matte Finish
The original makes sense if your goal is historical comparison: you can see how the earlier release differs from the expanded version. That is an optional curiosity, not necessary preparation for the remake.
Will Persona 4 Revival include every Golden addition?
That is not established by the official material cited here. SEGA and ATLUS describe Revival as a remake of Golden, but the available announcements do not provide a definitive feature-by-feature list confirming that every addition from Golden will return unchanged. Treat the remake’s exact content as unsettled rather than assuming complete feature parity.
The official regional game page says the remake stays true to the original story while transforming gameplay, and lists new seasonal events, new scenes, voiced Social Links and new events, and remastered music. In an Xbox Wire interview, Kazuhisa Wada, ATLUS General Producer of the Persona team, said the aim was to preserve the story, characters, and defining themes while changing visuals, cinematic presentation, exploration, and gameplay feel. Those are official descriptions of the project and its intent, not a finished-game review or confirmation of every returning feature.
Release timing and platforms announced for Revival
As of October 4, 2026, SEGA’s June announcement schedules Persona 4 Revival for February 18, 2027, on Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and Steam. The English product information in that announcement identifies PS5 as the only physical version in its listing. The official regional page also lists Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for May 20, 2027. Dates and availability differ by platform and regional listing, so check the relevant current store page if timing or format affects your choice.
