Choose flowering plants that are indigenous or native to your local area, then check that they suit your verge’s conditions and are allowed by your council. A mix of locally appropriate flowers can provide more opportunities for bees and butterflies to feed; low groundcovers and tufted grasses can fill gaps where permitted. There is no reliable universal plant list: location, mature size, maintenance and council rules all matter.
How to choose plants that suit your area
Start with your council’s recommended species list or a local indigenous-plant nursery. Prioritize plants native to your immediate region, rather than assuming a plant described as “Australian native” will suit every Australian verge. Local plants are more likely to fit local climate and conditions, and councils including Stonnington and Brisbane recommend native planting for biodiversity and pollinators. That does not mean every native species benefits every bee or butterfly.
Choose flowering plants for the pollinator part of the garden; foliage-only plants do not provide the flowers bees and butterflies visit. If possible, select several locally suitable species whose flowering periods complement one another. Ask a local nursery or council for flowering-season information: the available guidance supports flowering plantings, but it does not establish a universal species-by-month calendar.

Before settling on a plant, check its mature height and spread, water needs, and suitability for the strip’s sun, soil and roadside exposure. Favor low-growing forms near paths, driveways, corners, signs and other places where visibility or access matters. Brisbane’s guidance recommends water-wise, low-growing or groundcover plants; Stonnington also recommends tufted grasses and groundcovers.

Annuals bloom the first season. Perennials come back year after year, stronger each spring. No fillers, no coatings, no mystery seeds.
- SCATTER, TAMP, WATER. THAT'S IT. No gardening experience needed. Prepare a patch of soil, scatter these bulk wildflower seeds, gently press down, and water lightly. One 2 oz pouch covers 250 sq. ft with dense, vibrant blooms. A little goes a long way.
- BLOOMS IN EVERY STATE, EVERY SEASON. These wildflower seeds for planting work in all USDA hardiness zones (1 through 13). Sow after your last spring frost for summer color, or plant in early fall for natural overwintering and a burst of blooms come spring. Works in sun, tolerates partial shade.
- GERMINATION GUARANTEED, OR WE REPLACE IT. Every batch is tested before we pack it. If your seeds don't sprout, reach out and we'll send a replacement. No receipt hunting, no fine print. Just seeds that grow, backed by a company that stands behind them.
- Local fit: Is the plant indigenous or native to your region, and does your council allow it?
- Flowers: Does it flower at a useful time locally, and can it complement other plants in the verge?
- Size: Will its mature height and spread fit the council’s rules and leave access clear?
- Site and upkeep: Can it cope with the strip’s exposure and water availability, and can you maintain it?
- Safety: Is it compatible with pedestrian access, sight lines and underground or surface infrastructure?
Examples are local, not universal prescriptions
A roadside planting project on the A38 in Devon, England, included yellow rattle and bird’s-foot trefoil. Highways England said seed was obtained from a nearby farm to keep the plants as local as possible. These are examples from a specific English project, not a ready-made mix for Australian nature strips or other regions. Use your local council’s plant list or local indigenous nursery to identify suitable species.
Richmond upon Thames says dandelions flower in early spring and provide food for pollinating insects. That is useful context for its local guidance, not a recommendation to plant dandelions everywhere; suitability and council rules vary.

Check council rules before planting
A nature strip is commonly part of the public road reserve, so residents do not necessarily have unrestricted control over what is planted. Rules vary even between nearby councils, and the examples below apply only in the named jurisdictions. Check your council’s current guidance before buying plants or digging.
| Authority | Relevant verge guidance |
|---|---|
| Brisbane City Council | Residential verge gardens should use low-growing plants no taller than 700 mm. Trees and tall shrubs must not be planted in a verge garden, and a 1.8 m pedestrian strip must be maintained. |
| Sunshine Coast Council | Self-assessable low garden beds may be up to 50 cm high at maturity, set back 60 cm from the road edge, and must preserve a 1.8 m clear passage where there is no formed path. Designs outside the criteria require a permit. |
| City of Stonnington | Its draft policy describes a permit process, a 90 cm overall height limit and additional low-planting zones. The draft also disallows edible planting, citing possible soil contamination in inner-metropolitan Melbourne. |
These dimensions and conditions are not interchangeable. For example, Brisbane’s 700 mm limit is not the applicable limit on the Sunshine Coast, where the cited self-assessable bed limit is 50 cm at maturity. Confirm the current rule with the authority responsible for your road reserve. Camden Council advises residents to check its maintenance policy and encourages discussion with neighbours.

Protect access, sight lines and services
- Keep the required pedestrian route clear and avoid blocking drivers’ sight lines, signs, hydrants, trees or utility access.
- Check for underground assets before excavation. Stonnington’s draft conditions call for a Before You Dig Australia check; Sunshine Coast Council also advises checking utilities before planting.
- Plan for maintenance and future utility work. Brisbane says residents are responsible for verge gardens and warns that service work may disturb a garden without restoring it.
- Confirm whether you need a permit or whether your design qualifies for self-assessment. These processes differ by council.
Consider how the verge will be maintained
Plant choice is only part of making a verge useful to pollinators. In its 2026 guidance, Richmond upon Thames says less frequent cutting gives native plants and wildflowers time to flower and set seed. Its recommendation reflects that council’s local approach; check who maintains your verge and what the applicable rules allow before changing mowing or maintenance.
