Pack the items you may need before your checked bag is available: essential medicines, identification and itinerary details, your phone and charging cable, a cabin-approved power bank, and a small overnight kit. Keep them in your personal item or carry-on, and check current screening and airline rules before departure. A delay does not guarantee that an airline will provide a meal, hotel, or access to checked baggage.
Carry-on checklist for a long delay
- Health: Prescription medicines and any medically necessary cooling supplies, packed where you can reach them.
- Documents: Identification, booking details, and important travel information for your route and destination.
- Phone and charging: Your phone, charging cable, and a power bank that complies with the operating airline’s limits.
- Overnight basics: Clean underwear, a lightweight change of clothes, a toothbrush, and compact hygiene supplies.
- Comfort: A light layer and a small snack, subject to security and airline restrictions.
Prioritize essentials that would be difficult to replace quickly or that you may need while waiting. You do not need to pack a second full suitcase: a compact kit is easier to keep with you if your bag is taken at the gate.
Keep medicines and medical supplies accessible
The TSA says medically necessary liquids and medicines may exceed the usual 3.4-ounce (100-milliliter) liquid threshold, subject to screening. Remove them for separate screening. Liquid medicine does not have to be in a zip-top bag. See the TSA travel tips for its guidance.

Keep medicines in your personal item or another bag that will stay in the cabin, rather than relying on checked baggage. If you need cooling supplies, keep them accessible too and check the relevant screening rules for your items and itinerary.

Pack phone charging gear with battery rules in mind
A power bank can help keep your phone available for airline updates, messages, and travel details during a long wait. FAA guidance says rechargeable batteries rated 0–100 watt-hours (Wh) are allowed on passenger aircraft; a spare battery rated 101–160 Wh requires airline approval, and one above 160 Wh is forbidden. Airlines may set stricter limits, so check with the operating carrier before you travel. See the FAA’s passenger battery guidance.
Power banks and spare lithium batteries must travel in the cabin, not in checked baggage. If your carry-on is gate-checked or taken planeside, remove the power bank and keep it with you. Protect battery terminals from short circuits; the FAA explains battery packing precautions in its lithium-battery guidance.

Do not assume a familiar capacity label or a device that was allowed on a previous trip will meet your current airline’s rules.
Make an overnight kit without overpacking
If an overnight stay is plausible, pack a clean change of underwear and lightweight clothing, plus a toothbrush and compact hygiene supplies. This is a practical checklist, not a guarantee that every toiletry will pass screening. Check the TSA’s item-by-item guidance for specific liquids and gels, and review your airline’s baggage size and allowance rules.

Do not count on airline-provided meals or lodging
Airlines set their own policies for assistance to passengers delayed at the airport; the U.S. Department of Transportation says there is no federal requirement that they provide such assistance. Do not pack on the assumption that a meal or hotel will be provided, or that you will be able to retrieve checked baggage during a delay. Check your airline’s current policy and keep immediate necessities with you. The DOT’s Fly Rights explains the distinction.

Check rules for your route and operating airline
The cited FAA, TSA, and DOT guidance describes U.S. rules and guidance. International journeys, connecting airports, and the airline operating each flight can add restrictions. Confirm battery limits, baggage allowances, and screening requirements close to departure, especially if a bag may be gate-checked.
