Pack a lightweight rain poncho or rain jacket, comfortable footwear suited to the festival grounds, and dry spare socks or clothes. If you’re camping, protect your tent and sleeping gear with suitable rain coverage and sealed storage. Before leaving, check the festival’s current bag and prohibited-item rules: they vary by event, and some festivals do not allow umbrellas.
Pack wearable rain protection first
Poncho or rain jacket
A lightweight poncho is easy to stow in a day bag and can cover more than your clothing; a rain jacket is a reusable option you may find more comfortable to wear beyond the festival. Both are recommended in REI’s festival camping checklist, and Hinterland’s 2026 festival guidance names ponchos. Choose based on fit, coverage and what you will carry. Neither is a universal winner.
Footwear for the ground you expect
Long festival days call for comfortable, supportive shoes. If rain is likely to leave the grounds muddy or standing water is expected, waterproof boots may be a better choice. They are a conditional option, not a requirement for every rainy event; consider both likely ground conditions and how comfortable you can walk in them. REI and Hinterland both include footwear guidance in their festival advice.
Dry extras
Bring extra socks and a dry change of clothes, particularly for a multi-day festival or one where you will camp. The amount depends on the length of your trip and your plans; the cited packing guidance does not prescribe a standard quantity.

Use a day bag only if it meets the event rules
Do not assume that a bag allowed at one festival will be accepted at another. Check the organizer’s current policy for permitted dimensions, materials, pockets and bag types before packing. Some events require clear bags, and rules may change. For instance, Hinterland’s 2026 festival-grounds guidance permits bags no larger than 18 x 13 x 8.5 inches, while BottleRock specifies a clear-bag policy. Those examples apply to those events, not to festivals generally.
Umbrellas are not a safe substitute for a poncho or jacket unless your event explicitly allows them. Hinterland and BottleRock prohibit umbrellas; Riot Fest lists raincoats and ponchos as allowed. Confirm the current rules on your own event’s official site: Hinterland, BottleRock and Riot Fest each publish event-specific guidance, which may be updated.

Add shelter protection and sealed storage if you’re camping
Rain preparation for camping is different from packing for a day at the festival. Keep your sleeping setup and spare clothing protected even if the weather is dry when you arrive.

- Waterproof tarp or suitable tent rain protection: bring protection appropriate for your shelter and campsite.
- Sealed bags or waterproof containers: store dry clothes and belongings where rain cannot reach them. Hinterland’s 2026 camping tips specifically recommend waterproof tarps and sealed bags or containers.
- Rain boots: consider them if the campsite is wet or muddy; they are not necessary for every camping trip.
- Gear transport: if your campsite is separate from parking, plan how to carry your equipment. Hinterland notes that cars are not next to tent sites at its campground and suggests a wagon there. Check the rules before bringing a wagon into any festival venue.
Check the forecast and rules close to departure
- Revisit the festival’s official allowed- and prohibited-items and bag-policy pages. Check the policy for your event date and venue rather than relying on an old list or another festival’s rules.
- Check the local forecast and overnight low. Use them to decide how much dry clothing to pack and whether you need extra warmth as well as rain protection.
- Consider the ground and your plans. Mud, standing water and camping call for different footwear and gear than a day visit on dry, firm grounds.
- Review medical-item rules if you need to bring medication. Policies can specify original containers or other documentation. Gov Ball’s official allowed and prohibited items page, marked last updated August 27, 2026, is one event-specific example; follow the rules for your own festival.
