Choose a fantasy goalie by first matching the player to your league’s scoring, then weighing expected starts, role security, team context, performance across relevant categories, and health. A goalie’s win total alone is not enough: category leagues and points leagues can reward very different profiles.
Start with your league’s goalie scoring
In a standard category league, the usual goalie categories are wins, goals-against average (GAA), save percentage (SV%), and shutouts. NHL.com lists these as standard categories in its October 1, 2026 rankings for the 2026–27 season. Check your league settings before comparing players, because platforms and commissioners can use different formats.
Category leagues
Compare how a goalie could contribute across all the categories your league counts. A player with many wins may help in that category but may not be the best all-around choice if your league also values GAA, SV%, and shutouts. Consider whether your roster needs strength in particular categories rather than treating one overall ranking as decisive.

Read the actual scoring weights for wins, saves, goals against, and shutouts. Yahoo Help’s default head-to-head points settings, accessed in 2026, list 5 points for a win, -3 for goals against, 0.6 per save, and 5 for a shutout. Those are Yahoo defaults, not universal rules; your league may differ. See Yahoo’s goalie scoring settings and use the values shown in your own league.

Scoring weights can change which goalie profile is useful. For example, if saves earn points and goals against lose points, the balance between volume and efficiency matters; do not assume a category ranking will translate directly into a points-league ranking.
Estimate workload and role security
Expected starts determine how often a goalie has a chance to record wins, saves, and shutouts. Check whether the player is established as the primary starter or shares the crease in a tandem. An uncertain role can reduce counting-stat opportunities even when the goalie has been productive.

NHL.com says its 2026–27 rankings consider anticipated starts and team goalie situations. Before drafting or setting a lineup, check for recent changes to the depth chart and projected starts; a season-long ranking can become stale as roles shift.

Team goal support can affect a goalie’s chances of earning wins, so it belongs in the evaluation. But wins are only one part of a standard category profile. NHL.com’s 2025–26 win-projection article notes that its order based on projected wins differs from rankings that also account for GAA, SV%, and shutouts. Treat win projections as one input, not as a complete fantasy ranking. NHL.com’s 2025–26 goalie win projections are from the prior season and should not be used as current player forecasts.

Compare production using the stats your league rewards
For category formats, review wins alongside GAA, SV%, and shutouts. Yahoo Help defines save percentage as (shots faced minus goals allowed) divided by shots faced, and GAA as (goals allowed multiplied by 60) divided by minutes played. These measures describe different aspects of a goalie’s results, so examine the categories separately rather than using wins as a proxy for overall value. Yahoo also states that a goalie must play the entire game to earn a shutout. See Yahoo’s goalie-stat definitions.
Past production can help establish a baseline, but it does not guarantee what a goalie will do next. NHL.com says its current evaluations consider regular-season and playoff production as well as potential regression, bounce-back performance, and breakout potential. Its page does not provide a numerical formula for how much weight each factor receives.

Check health and uncertainty near decision time
Injury history or a current injury concern can affect both availability and projected workload. NHL.com identifies health as a factor in its rankings and notes that injuries can alter win projections. Verify the latest status and likely role close to your draft or lineup decision instead of relying only on an older projection.
Projections are estimates, not promises. NHL.com described its 2025–26 win projections as safe estimates rather than ceilings or floors; that characterization is useful context for projections generally, but those figures apply to the prior season.

A practical comparison checklist
- Open your league settings. Identify whether goalies are scored by categories or points, and note the exact categories or point weights.
- Check projected starts and role. Determine whether the goalie is expected to start regularly or share time, and confirm that the information is current.
- Assess team context. Consider goal support as one factor in win potential, not as a replacement for the other scoring measures.
- Compare relevant production. Use wins, GAA, SV%, and shutouts in category leagues; in points leagues, apply your league’s specific scoring weights.
- Review health and uncertainty. Look for injury news, role changes, and reasons a projection might differ from past results.
NHL.com’s October 1, 2026 2026–27 editorial ranking placed Andrei Vasilevskiy, Logan Thompson, Ilya Sorokin, Jake Oettinger, and Igor Shesterkin in its top five. That is a dated ranking example, not a universal ordering for every scoring format or a guarantee of results.
