Choose a LEGO-compatible inventory or building tool by checking whether it can represent the pieces you actually own, help you design with those pieces, and move a usable parts list into the next step of your workflow. BrickLink Studio is one documented example that combines virtual building with a My Collection palette, imports, and parts-list exports; the best fit still depends on your collection records and the file formats you need.
Start with the job you need the software to do
“Parts inventory” and “digital building software” solve related but different problems. An inventory records the parts and quantities you own. A design tool lets you build a model virtually. Some workflows connect the two, so you can plan around your collection; others require you to move data between separate tools.
Before choosing, decide whether your priority is keeping an owned-parts record, designing from that record, creating instructions or renders, importing existing models, or turning a design into a sourcing list. Then check the exact inputs and outputs that job requires.
Check whether your owned-parts inventory can stay accurate
A tool can only guide you using the collection information it has. Look for a way to record owned parts and quantities, and consider how you will keep those records current as you build, sort, or acquire pieces. Neither a catalog nor a collection feature establishes that your personal inventory is complete simply because it exists.

Rebrickable’s API documentation describes LEGO catalog data and authenticated user collection data. That makes collection information available to supported workflows, but the accuracy of an individual collection depends on the information the user maintains: Rebrickable API documentation.
Can you build digitally using only the parts in your collection?
Look for an explicit feature that uses owned inventory during design, rather than assuming that any parts catalog knows what you own. BrickLink Studio documents a My Collection palette for building with pieces already owned. Studio is described as a desktop app for Windows and Mac that also supports virtual building, design testing, rendering, instruction creation, and use of the BrickLink catalog: BrickLink Studio.

A collection-based palette can help you plan with recorded parts, but it cannot correct missing or outdated inventory entries. If designing strictly from owned pieces matters, confirm how the installed version selects collection parts and whether its behavior matches your intended workflow before relying on it for a project.

Portability matters when you already have models or want to send a parts list to another tool. Studio documents imports for LDraw and LDD model files, BrickLink XML wanted-list files, and set inventories. Its exports include LDraw, MPD, LXFML, CSV, and TSV; exported parts lists contain BrickLink IDs, names, and colors. Those capabilities do not guarantee that another program will accept every version or field exactly as exported, so verify the receiving tool’s requirements.

Interpret set inventories instead of treating them as loose-piece counts
A set inventory can distinguish regular parts, counterparts, alternates, and extras. Studio imports regular parts and counterparts, with extras optional. Counterpart components can affect displayed quantities, so an imported inventory should not automatically be read as an exact count of loose physical pieces.
Inspect the imported contents and decide how the tool represents the particular components you care about. This is especially important when using set data to compare against a physical collection or to prepare a sourcing list.

Separate inventory data from pricing and sourcing
A parts inventory answers what parts are represented; it does not necessarily answer what those parts cost or whether they are currently available. Rebrickable’s API documentation says the API provides LEGO catalog and collection data but not set or part pricing, because pricing data belongs to external sites: Rebrickable API documentation.

Use this checklist to choose a workflow
- Collection fidelity: Can you record owned parts and quantities, and will you keep that record updated?
- Design from inventory: Does the tool have a collection-aware palette or another documented way to work from owned pieces?
- Import coverage: Does it accept the set inventory, wanted list, or model-file format you already use?
- Export portability: Can it create the model file or parts list your next tool can read?
- Inventory interpretation: Can you inspect alternates, spares, counterparts, stickered pieces, or assemblies as needed?
- Sourcing workflow: Is there a catalog or marketplace handoff, and are price and regional availability actually supplied?
- Platform and outputs: Does the desktop platform suit your setup, and do you need rendering, instruction creation, or sharing?
For physical sorting, a small parts organizer with compartments can help keep pieces grouped while you maintain a digital record. The right organizer depends on your collection and workspace; no particular model is established here.
