Compare Bluetooth speaker battery life only when the stated listening conditions are similar, read the complete IP rating rather than relying on the word “waterproof,” and confirm that both your speaker and source device support the codec you want. A Bluetooth version number by itself does not tell you which audio codecs are supported or prove that a speaker supports LE Audio.
How to compare battery-life claims
An “up to” runtime is a manufacturer estimate under particular conditions, not a promise that every listener will get that many hours. Volume is especially important, but audio content, equalizer settings, temperature, battery modes, and charging another device can also affect runtime. Treat figures from different brands as screening information unless their test conditions match.
Read the conditions attached to the number
Bose lists 12 hours at a moderate volume level for the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), and says runtime is lower at maximum volume. Its estimate uses Bluetooth A2DP at 50% volume, a temperature of 68–77°F (20–25°C), default EQ, a specified mix of Top 50 Global tracks as of February 2024, and no charging of external devices. Bose’s product specifications describe those test conditions.
JBL’s Flip 7 specification sheet states up to 14 hours of music playback, dependent on volume and audio content. JBL’s product page separately advertises up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost, so keep that feature attached to the higher figure rather than treating both claims as the same operating condition. JBL states a charging time of 2.5 hours at 5V/3A. JBL’s Flip 7 product page and specifications provide these claims.

What else to check
- Whether the claim is for ordinary playback or requires a special mode such as Playtime Boost.
- Whether the manufacturer states a charging time and the charging conditions.
- Whether using the speaker to charge a phone or other device affects playback time.
- Whether the claimed runtime fits your typical listening volume and session length.
What an IP water-resistance rating tells you
Look for the full IP classification and the manufacturer’s stated limits for the use you have in mind. For example, JBL lists the Flip 7 as IP68, while Bose lists the SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen) as IP67. Those classifications do not, by themselves, establish that either speaker is suitable for every kind of water exposure or provide a directly comparable immersion depth and duration. The cited product pages do not give matching immersion conditions.

Before using a speaker where it may be submerged or repeatedly exposed to water, check its manual or product documentation for the exact test conditions and exclusions. Pay particular attention if you plan to use it in a pool or the sea: the product-page claims cited here do not establish saltwater protection. Do not infer a specific safe depth or time from the shorthand alone.

A codec encodes and decodes the audio stream. To use a particular codec, the transmitting device and the speaker must support it in the connection mode you intend to use. If codec support is essential, check both devices’ specifications; Bluetooth version numbers alone are not a codec inventory.

Classic Audio, LE Audio, and LC3
Bluetooth LE Audio operates over Bluetooth Low Energy and is distinct from Bluetooth Classic Audio. The Bluetooth SIG says the LE Isochronous Channels feature used by LE Audio was introduced in Bluetooth Core Specification 5.2, and LC3 is mandatory for LE Audio. LE Audio also adds Auracast broadcast audio. Product makers may support additional optional or proprietary codecs, so verify the named features for the exact products rather than assuming every Bluetooth speaker supports LE Audio.
The Bluetooth SIG quotes Manfred Lutzky, Head of Audio for Communications at Fraunhofer IIS: “Extensive listening tests have shown that LC3 will provide improvements in audio quality over the SBC codec included with Classic Audio, even at a 50% lower bit rate.” That is a reported listening-test comparison of LC3 and SBC, not a battery-life test of a particular speaker. The SIG says developers may use efficiency gains to make different trade-offs among audio quality, power use, battery life, and device size; the outcome depends on implementation and use. Its discussion of up to double battery life describes a possible design choice for achieving the same audio quality, not a guaranteed runtime improvement for a consumer speaker.

- Made in part with recycled materials: The JBL Go 4 incorporates post-consumer recycled plastic and fabric for the speaker grille. It's also packaged in FSC-certified paper printed with soy ink.
For casual streaming, codec names may matter less day to day than runtime at your listening volume, water protection for your setting, portability, and controls. If you have a specific codec requirement, confirm explicit support on both the speaker and the source device.

Quick Recap
A practical checklist before you buy
- Compare runtime on comparable terms. Check the listening volume, special modes, and other test conditions behind each figure.
- Check charging needs. Compare stated charging time and consider whether you will use the speaker to charge another device.
- Match the IP classification to your setting. Find the manufacturer’s actual test limits and exclusions, especially for submersion, pools, or sea use.
- Confirm codec support at both ends. Check the speaker and the phone, computer, or other source for the codec and connection mode you need.
- Weigh the features you will use. Consider size, portability, controls, app support, and multi-speaker or connection features alongside the three headline specifications.
