Before relying on an AI cloud provider, ask for evidence that the specific compute you need—accelerator type, quantity, region, and start date—is available and supported by power that is ready to serve it. A large grid agreement, a clean-energy target, or a provider-wide capacity figure is not the same as a reservation you can use. Compare customer-usable capacity, power readiness, resilience, energy sourcing, efficiency, water use, and any demand-response terms on the same basis.
Start with the capacity you can actually reserve
Ask the provider to tie its capacity statement to your workload: name the service, accelerator, quantity, region, reservation status, and date the resources can be used. Separate capacity already operating from capacity expected later, and ask what conditions remain before later capacity is deliverable.
This distinction matters because public figures often describe different stages of development. IREN Limited reported approximately 40 MW of operating AI Cloud Services capacity and approximately 5 GW in executed grid connection agreements, letters of agreement, or equivalents as of June 30, 2026. Those are not interchangeable measures: the first describes operating AI cloud capacity, while the second describes grid agreements and equivalents. Neither figure establishes how much capacity a customer can reserve at a particular location and date. IREN FY2026 filing
When a provider cites a large power or capacity number, ask which stage it represents: running service, an executed grid connection, construction, or a development plan. Request the remaining approvals, construction dependencies, and expected delivery dates for anything not yet operating.

Check whether power is ready, not merely contracted
Grid access, electricity procurement, and customer compute availability are related but distinct. A grid connection agreement can be an important step without proving that a facility is built, energized, equipped with the required accelerators, or available to your workload. Likewise, an energy contract does not by itself show that a particular data center has firm, round-the-clock carbon-free power.
Ask the provider to identify the power arrangement supporting the proposed capacity and its status: operating supply, executed grid connection, purchase contract, construction project, or pipeline. Clarify what approvals, transmission work, equipment, or other milestones remain, and whether the target date is firm or conditional.
Test the resilience of the service architecture
Power continuity depends on the architecture serving your workload, not just on a provider-wide reliability statement. Microsoft’s documentation describes availability zones with independent power, cooling, and networking, as well as datacenters with dedicated uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and emergency generators. Ask how the specific service and region use these protections, and which failure scenarios its service commitment covers. Microsoft datacenter architecture documentation

Get concrete answers about redundancy, UPS and generator arrangements, zone and region separation, failover behavior, and the customer commitment for the service. A zone-level design and a multi-region recovery plan address different failure scopes; establish whether your deployment is configured to use either and what interruption or performance impact to expect.
Separate clean-energy claims by what they measure
“Renewable,” “carbon-free,” and “100% matched” can describe different procurement approaches. Find out whether a claim means annual matching, time- and location-matched supply, electricity from a contracted project, or power relevant to the local grid serving the workload. Ask how much of the cited generation is online versus contracted for the future, and whether the claim applies to the relevant geography.
Microsoft says, “We purchase electricity from local power utilities,” and says it adds carbon-free energy through power purchase agreements (PPAs) and other long-term contracts. Microsoft reports approximately 40 GW of new renewable energy supply contracted since 2020, with 19 GW online, in its explanation of energy use at its datacenters. The online portion and contracted total should remain distinct when assessing what is operating. Microsoft also explains that PPAs can help developers secure financing for projects; a PPA alone does not establish continuous carbon-free supply to an individual facility. Google describes multiple energy procurement mechanisms and an ambition to match electricity use with carbon-free energy every hour on every grid where it operates. Its energy page reports nearly 35 GW of new clean energy under more than 240 agreements from 2010 to 2025. That is Google’s cumulative procurement disclosure, not independent verification that each project delivers power to every data center. Google also states: “We pay for 100% of the electricity our data centers and offices use, contribute to shared grid infrastructure, bring new resources online, and accelerate emerging technologies—benefitting the whole system.” Ask what the claim means for the location and operating period relevant to your service. Compare efficiency and water figures with their scope attached
Power-use effectiveness (PUE) and water-use effectiveness (WUE) can help assess facility efficiency, but a figure is useful only with its reporting period, geography, site scope, and operating maturity. Microsoft reports the following global figures for FY24 and FY25:
| Metric | FY24 | FY25 |
|---|---|---|
| Global PUE | 1.16 | 1.17 |
| Global WUE | 0.30 L/kWh | 0.27 L/kWh |
These are Microsoft-reported figures for facilities it fully owns and controls that were operational for 12 months at calculation time—not an industry-wide benchmark. Microsoft says the metrics may change as facilities reach full operating capacity. Ask for comparable data for the facility or region serving your workload, including the reporting period and sites included. Microsoft’s efficiency methodology and figures

Cooling also affects the water comparison. Ask which cooling approach serves the relevant site, what water source it uses, and what consumption data is available. Google says it considers carbon-free energy availability alongside responsibly sourced water. Its June 4, 2026 announcement describes air cooling at a Texas project as a way to limit water consumption; that is a project-specific example, not evidence that every Google facility uses air cooling. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clarify whether demand response can affect your workload
Some providers use demand response—reducing or shifting electricity use when grid conditions call for it—as part of their power strategy. Google reported integrating 1 GW of demand-response capacity into long-term U.S. utility contracts, using the ability to limit or shift some machine-learning workloads. The announcement does not establish that a particular customer’s workload will be shifted or that its service terms permit it. Michael Terrell, Google’s Head of Advanced Energy, said, “Demand response enables our data centers to be valuable assets for the power grid.” Google’s March 19, 2026 announcement
Ask whether the provider can curtail, defer, or relocate your workload; how much notice it gives; what customer controls are available; and which performance or service guarantees still apply. Get the answer in terms of your chosen service and contract rather than inferring customer impact from a provider-wide program.

Use a like-for-like provider comparison
Record the same evidence for each candidate. If a provider cannot supply a comparable value, mark it “not stated” and identify the source of the information rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
| Comparison area | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Customer-usable compute | Service, accelerator type and quantity, region, reservation status, and usable date. |
| Power readiness | Operating capacity versus grid agreement, contract, construction, or plan; remaining dependencies and target dates. |
| Reliability | Power redundancy, UPS and generator arrangements, zone or region separation, failover behavior, and applicable service commitment. |
| Energy sourcing | Local utility supply, PPAs or other contracts, project status and geography, and whether matching is annual or hourly and location-based. |
| Efficiency and water | PUE and WUE, reporting period, sites included, operating-maturity rules, and the relevant site’s cooling approach. |
| Demand flexibility | Whether the workload can be shifted or limited, notice, customer controls, and applicable service terms. |
Use these records to decide whether the provider’s evidence matches your workload’s actual requirements. If a broad capacity, energy, or sustainability claim cannot be connected to your service, region, and delivery window, treat it as context—not proof that your deployment is ready.
