A hurricane-season trip can be reasonable, but no season-wide statistic can tell you whether a particular island will be hit during your dates. Plan around the destination’s current forecasts and emergency guidance, and decide in advance how you would handle evacuation, medical needs, and travel disruption.
When is hurricane season in the Caribbean?
The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30 and includes the Caribbean Sea. Tropical cyclones can occur outside those dates, so the season boundaries are not a guarantee of safety. Atlantic activity is most common from mid-August to mid-October, with a climatological peak around September 10, according to the National Hurricane Center’s historical climatology. The peak date is based on smoothed daily activity charts using Atlantic data from 1944–2020, normalized to 100 years; it describes historical activity, not a prediction for a particular year or trip.

Is it safe to visit a tropical island during hurricane season?
There is no single answer for every island, date, or traveler. A basin-wide seasonal outlook gives context about expected overall activity; NOAA says its outlook is not a landfall forecast and does not predict activity at a particular location. It cannot tell you the chance that a specific island will be struck during your holiday. For a trip-specific decision, check current official forecasts and the destination government’s alerts, and weigh how exposed the destination is, how quickly you could leave or shelter, and how much disruption you can tolerate.

What should you check before booking?
Destination guidance and flexibility
Look up the destination government’s travel and emergency-management information. Identify its official alert channels, local emergency number, and stated evacuation or shelter arrangements. Check current airline, ferry, and lodging policies so you understand what options you have if travel is delayed or plans change.

Insurance terms
The U.S. Department of State recommends considering travel insurance for emergency medical care and medical evacuation abroad. Compare the actual policy wording for medical care, evacuation, named storms, cancellation, interruption, delays, and pre-existing conditions. A general recommendation to consider insurance does not establish that a particular policy covers a hurricane-related loss; the policy’s terms control. The State Department’s 2024 hurricane-season travel guidance is a general recommendation, so confirm current terms directly with the insurer.
What should you arrange before departure?
- Save official sources: Bookmark National Hurricane Center forecasts and identify local government alert sources. Set up more than one way to receive forecasts and alerts where possible; the NHC preparedness guidance recommends multiple alert methods.
- Ask your accommodation about its storm plan: Find out how it contacts guests, where guests should shelter, and what happens if transport or utilities are disrupted. Procedures vary by property and destination, so get the answer from your hotel, resort, or host.
- Keep essentials accessible: Keep identification, prescriptions, essential medical information, payment cards and some cash, your phone, and a charger easy to reach. NOAA’s preparedness guidance includes supplies such as cash, documents, medicines, and communications options.
- Make a contact plan: Agree with travel companions how you will check in and where to reconnect if separated. NOAA advises having multiple ways to receive alerts and knowing what to do before, during, and after a storm. NOAA preparedness guidance
- Consider a battery-powered radio: NOAA lists one among preparedness supplies. It can be a backup if useful local broadcasts are available, but it does not replace official phone alerts or instructions from authorities.
What should you do if a hurricane is forecast during your trip?
Follow current official information
Monitor current forecasts from official sources and notices from local authorities. A seasonal outlook cannot guide a response to a storm approaching your location, and social media alone may not provide reliable or complete instructions. Check the local authorities’ directions for your specific area and accommodation.

Understand watches and warnings
CDC guidance describes a hurricane watch as meaning hurricane conditions are possible; it is issued 48 hours before expected tropical-storm-force winds. A hurricane warning means hurricane-force winds are expected and is issued 36 hours before expected tropical-storm-force winds. These are lead times tied to the expected onset of tropical-storm-force winds, not assurances about when local impacts will begin. Alert systems and local instructions may provide additional direction. CDC’s hurricane safety guidance says to listen to authorities about whether to evacuate or shelter.
Act on evacuation or shelter instructions
Follow local authorities’ instructions rather than waiting for conditions to worsen. Ask accommodation staff how to receive updates and where to go if evacuation or sheltering is directed. Keep essential documents, medicine, and communications items accessible so you can act promptly.
