Fate/Extra is a role-playing game set in a digital world on the Moon, where Masters and Servants compete in a Moon Holy Grail War. It began as a PSP game released in Japan in 2010; Fate/Extra Record is an announced remake with an expanded narrative and redesigned, deck-based battles. You can approach it as a distinct Fate story: the available official sources do not say that you must first play Fate/stay night or watch another Fate series.
What is Fate/Extra about?
Fate/Extra takes place in a setting centered on the Moon rather than the better-known setting of Fate/stay night. In the remake’s official PlayStation Store description, the Moon Holy Grail War unfolds within SE.RA.PH, a digital world hidden on the Moon. Masters and their Servants compete for the Holy Grail; the listing describes a tournament involving 128 pairs.

The advertised premise for Fate/Extra Record has the player exploring dungeons, developing a Servant, meeting rival pairs, and collecting information about opponents before battles. That store description is for the remake, so it is safest to treat those details as the remake’s stated setup rather than a complete account of the original PSP game. The summary here avoids character identities and later story revelations.

Do you need to know the rest of Fate first?
No prerequisite is established by the official material reviewed. PlayStation Blog identifies Fate/Extra as the Fate franchise’s first role-playing game, while the franchise began with TYPE-MOON’s 2004 PC game Fate/stay night. Those facts establish its place in the series, but not a required order for newcomers.
#1 Best Overall
- Engrossing Story: Written by the creator of the original Fate series of PC games, Kinoko Nasu, the story of Fate/EXTRA will not only appeal to long time fans of the Fate universe, via the inclusion of many familiar characters, but will also appeal to RPG fans looking for a deep, non-formulaic storyline that delves into such mature themes as loyalty, death, love, and what it means to be human
- Extensive replay value: Multiple story paths, each with their own unique dialog trees and character interactions that lead to different endings.
- Intuitive, Fast-paced Battle System: Using Guards, Attacks, and Breaks in combination with powerful Special Moves and Magic Spells, players are required to plan out their attacks to effectively counter their opponent's moves and emerge victorious from potentially deadly encounters.
A practical way to approach it is as a Moon-centered Fate story and RPG entry. The franchise spans games, anime, novels, manga, apps, and other media; PlayStation Blog described it in August 2026 as comprising “more than 100 titles” across those formats, not more than 100 games. No universal cross-franchise play order is established by the sources cited here.
How does the original game compare with Fate/Extra Record?
The key distinction is that Record is a remake, not simply the original game on a newer platform. The official descriptions confirm a refreshed presentation and expanded narrative, along with a redesigned battle system. They do not provide a complete side-by-side feature list.

Marvelous USA announced a worldwide release date of January 28, 2027, and physical editions for Nintendo Switch and PS5. The announcement is a release plan, not confirmation that editions are currently on sale; check the publisher’s current regional listings as the date approaches.
Platform announcements have differed by source and timing. A September 3, 2026 PlayStation Blog post discussed PS4 and PS5, while Marvelous USA’s later announcement also named Nintendo Switch. Do not assume that every platform list or edition applies identically in every region.
