Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) is a paint and coatings company with three operating segments, substantial operating cash generation, and exposure to cyclical demand. Its fiscal 2025 results showed higher sales and adjusted diluted EPS, but lower GAAP diluted EPS; year-end debt and expected higher interest expense also belong in the investment case. Those fundamentals do not establish whether the shares are attractively priced: the sources reviewed do not provide a current share price or valuation multiple.
What does Sherwin-Williams do?
The Sherwin-Williams Company develops, manufactures, distributes, and sells paints, coatings, and related products to professional, industrial, commercial, and retail customers. It reports three operating segments:
- Paint Stores Group: branded products sold through company-operated stores.
- Consumer Brands Group: branded products sold through retail and other distribution channels.
- Performance Coatings Group: coatings serving industrial and commercial markets.
The company’s own business description and fiscal 2025 Form 10-K identify its shares as SHW on the New York Stock Exchange. The mix of customer types and channels is useful context, but it does not eliminate the company’s exposure to demand changes across its markets.

The fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 19, 2026, reported the following full-year results. These are fiscal-year figures, not a summary of 2026 quarterly performance.

Management described demand as choppy while reporting record net sales and expanded gross profit and gross margin. The difference between the decline in diluted EPS and the increase in adjusted diluted EPS is a reason to inspect both measures and understand what the company excludes from its adjusted figure, rather than treating them as interchangeable.
How should investors read the cash, dividend, and debt picture?
The company says it has used cash from operations for capital expenditures, acquisitions, dividends, and share repurchases. Its investor-relations page reports these historical company figures as of December 31, 2025:

Those figures can help frame the company’s cash-generation and capital-return history, but they do not by themselves show whether the current dividend or share price is attractive. Debt is a counterweight to consider: at December 31, 2025, net debt was $10.664 billion, equal to 2.4 times 2025 EBITDA. The 2025 Form 10-K also said the company expected 2026 interest expense to increase by approximately $85 million. These are dated year-end and management-outlook figures, not a live balance-sheet update.

The fiscal 2025 Form 10-K identifies dependence on demand and cyclical end markets among the company’s risks. That makes activity in housing, repair and remodeling, industrial markets, and customer spending relevant areas to investigate; the cited materials do not quantify how sensitive Sherwin-Williams is to each one.

- Acquisition financing and integration: Acquisitions are one use of operating cash, and the company’s 2026 interest-cost outlook includes acquisition-related financing. Consider how financing costs and integration affect earnings and cash available for other uses.
- Leverage: Assess net debt alongside cash generation and earnings, and consider how debt service could change as refinancing and acquisition financing flow through.
- Quality of growth: Separate growth from operations from contributions associated with acquisitions, pricing, cost control, or share repurchases.
What should you check before deciding whether SHW fits your portfolio?
Use the company’s filings and updates to answer these questions before forming a view on the stock:
- Trace performance over several years. Review sales, gross margin, segment results, EPS, and operating cash flow, then identify what drove the changes.
- Find the sources of growth. Determine which segments and end markets are carrying growth and how exposed they may be to an economic slowdown.
- Test the balance-sheet story. Compare net debt with cash flow and earnings, and examine expected debt-service changes as refinancing and acquisition financing affect the company.
- Separate operating improvement from other contributors. Ask how much earnings growth comes from operations versus acquisitions, pricing, cost control, or share repurchases.
- Assess valuation using current information. Compare the market price with current and normalized earnings or cash flow. The materials available for this article do not establish a current SHW share price, valuation multiple, or peer valuation comparison, so they cannot support a current fair-value or buy/sell conclusion.
- Check portfolio fit. Consider whether the potential return and business risks suit your time horizon, diversification, and risk tolerance.
When comparing SHW with other investments, use the same measures for each: segment and end-market exposure, durability of sales and margins, cash conversion, leverage, capital allocation, and valuation against normalized earnings or cash flow. How current are these figures?
The financial baseline here is Sherwin-Williams’ fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 19, 2026. The investor-relations material reviewed showed a second-quarter 2026 results release dated July 28, 2026, but did not provide enough underlying Q2 figures to summarize that quarter. No current SHW price or valuation multiple is established here. Anyone making an investment decision should check the latest share price, quarterly performance, guidance, debt, dividend, and acquisition updates rather than treating the dated 2025 figures or 2026 interest outlook as live data.
