1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore you set out, check the site’s official visitor information or contact its staff for the exact route and current requirements. Stairs, low ceilings, uneven ground, footwear rules, and accessible alternatives vary from one place and tour to another.
What to check before you go
Look for route details for the specific tour or area you plan to visit. If the website does not answer a question that affects your decision, call or email the site rather than assuming the route is suitable.
- Stairs and handrails: Ask how many steps there are, whether they are steep or uneven, and where handrails are available.
- Passages: Check the narrowest width and lowest ceiling, and whether you will need to crouch or turn sideways.
- Walking surface and lighting: Find out whether floors or trails may be wet, loose, uneven, or dimly lit.
- Physical demands: Ask about the walking distance, tour duration, pace, rest opportunities, and whether visitors must complete the route without assistance.
- Rules and conditions: Confirm age limits, equipment restrictions, current closures, temperature or weather conditions, and whether the tour is running on your planned date.
- Alternatives: Ask whether there is a shorter route, partial tour, surface-only visit, or interpretive option, and whether it is available when you visit.
For one site-specific example, the National Park Service’s Oregon Caves visitor information, last updated September 5, 2024, describes a full tour with over 520 steps, many steep and uneven, and an 88-foot passageway with a ceiling as low as 45 inches. The same page describes the cave as consistently 44°F (7°C). These details apply to the Oregon Caves route, not archaeological sites generally.
Can you manage the route?
Judge the route against your own comfort and abilities; a description such as “moderately strenuous” does not tell you how it will feel personally. Consider whether you can manage the stated stairs, walking time, crouching, footing, and pace, including without support if that is required. If you are unsure, contact the site to discuss the demands and ask about alternatives. Do not rely on a general label or assume staff can provide physical assistance unless the site confirms it.

Oregon Caves says its tour is not recommended for people with certain heart, breathing, balance, or walking difficulties. That is guidance for that tour, not a general medical rule for other destinations. Ask the operator about the particular route rather than treating a site-specific warning as a diagnosis or universal clearance standard.
What shoes and clothing should you wear?
Follow the destination’s stated rules first, then choose clothing and footwear suited to its conditions. A closed-toe hiking shoe with a grippy sole may be appropriate where the site recommends sturdy footwear and traction, but it does not guarantee safety and may not meet every site’s requirements.

How to move safely through stairs and tight spaces
Once on the route, take your time and follow the guide or ranger’s instructions. Site guidance for Mammoth Cave advises visitors to watch their footing on uneven, sometimes wet trails; use handrails; watch for low ceilings; stay on marked routes; and remain with the tour group. At Carlsbad Caverns, visitors who are unsure about tour requirements are advised to ask a ranger for an explanation.

How to protect archaeological and cultural resources
Follow posted rules and leave objects and surfaces undisturbed. National Park Service guidance says not to dig, remove artifacts, or touch pictographs and petroglyphs; report disturbance or harmful activity to a ranger. It also advises: “Act respectfully to places that are sacred or culturally important.” Some sites limit access or disclosure to protect vulnerable cultural resources, so respect closures and restrictions even when the reason is not visible to visitors.

Ask the site directly about alternatives and access accommodations. Depending on the destination, options may include a shorter route, a partial tour, a surface-only visit, or an exhibit that presents some of the site’s interpretation without entering the confined route. Confirm that the option is open on your visit date and that its access requirements fit your needs.

Oregon Caves identifies Watson’s Grotto and a tactile visitor-center exhibit as options for some visitors, while noting that mobility devices cannot fit through most of the cave. Those alternatives are specific to Oregon Caves; another archaeological site may offer different options or none for a particular date. Ask the visitor center or tour operator about the route, access, and available alternatives before you travel.
