If you want to control Apple Home while away, run automations, or use certain Thread accessories, you need a supported home hub. For a combined speaker and hub with Thread, consider HomePod mini; for a hub that also streams TV, consider Apple TV 4K—but Thread support depends on the exact model and configuration. Some iPhones running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories locally without a hub, though Apple recommends a hub for the best experience and requires one for remote control.

What does an Apple Home hub do?

A home hub connects your Apple Home setup to functions that go beyond local control. Apple says a hub enables remote control, sharing control with others, and automations. To control your home remotely from an iPhone, Apple requires a hub and the same Apple Account on the hub and phone. Apple’s home hub setup guide and remote-control instructions describe these requirements.

HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically when set up. Apple TV becomes a hub after it is added to a room in the Home app. Only the Home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV as a hub.

Can you use Matter without a hub?

Apple says some iPhones running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub. That covers the stated local-use case; it does not provide remote access while you are away. Apple still recommends a hub for the best experience. Check the accessory’s requirements, because Matter support alone does not guarantee that every Apple Home feature will work without a hub. See Apple’s instructions for adding accessories.

Which Apple devices can act as a home hub?

Option When it makes sense Thread support
HomePod mini Choose it if a compact speaker is useful alongside the hub. Apple lists Wi-Fi, Thread networking, temperature and humidity sensors, and a 20W power adapter in the box. Its listed dimensions are 3.3 inches high and 3.9 inches wide; it weighs 0.76 pound. These are specifications, not a measure of room coverage or smart-home performance. Apple’s HomePod mini technical specifications Yes. Apple identifies HomePod mini as Thread-capable.
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation), Wi-Fi + Ethernet Choose it if you also want a streaming device. Apple says Apple TV 4K becomes a hub when added to a room in Home. The Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration has 128GB storage. Apple’s Apple TV 4K technical specifications Yes, for this specific configuration. Apple lists Thread networking on the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model.
Other Apple TV 4K configurations They may suit streaming, but do not assume every configuration has the same Thread capability. Apple’s cited specification lists 64GB storage for the Wi-Fi model and identifies Thread on the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. Confirm the exact device and accessory requirements before buying.

Apple’s support guidance also names HomePod (2nd generation) and Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) among Thread-capable devices. The specific purchase options above reflect the configurations detailed in Apple’s product specifications; support and product lineups can change. Apple’s sources do not establish a neutral performance ranking or current price comparison.

Do you need a Thread border router?

Thread is a networking technology used by some smart-home accessories; a Thread border router connects a Thread network with the rest of your home network. Apple says a Thread border router or Thread-enabled device is required for Thread accessories to work with automations, notifications, and remote control. Apple lists HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples. A compatible third-party border router may also meet the requirement. See Apple’s Thread border router guidance.

What to check before buying

  • The feature you need: For remote access, sharing control, or hub-dependent automations, plan on a supported home hub. For local control of a Matter accessory, check whether your iPhone and accessory meet Apple’s stated requirements.
  • The exact device configuration: If Thread matters, verify the full Apple TV generation and Wi-Fi or Ethernet configuration, or choose a device Apple explicitly identifies as Thread-capable.
  • The accessory’s setup requirements: Check its manual for required hardware, firmware, software, and manufacturer-app steps. Thread accessories need an eligible border router or Thread-enabled device for the listed hub-dependent features.
  • Your account and network: The Home owner must add the hub. For remote iPhone control, the hub and phone must use the same Apple Account. Make sure the hub can connect to your home Wi-Fi.
  • Current cost and availability: Apple’s cited specifications and support pages do not establish current prices, discounts, stock, or availability by region. Check Apple or local retailers for the exact model you intend to buy.

How to set up a hub and add an accessory

Add a HomePod or Apple TV as a hub

Set up HomePod or HomePod mini to have it become a hub automatically. To use Apple TV, add it to a room in the Home app. The Home owner must perform the addition. For remote control, confirm the hub and iPhone use the same Apple Account and that the hub is connected to the home network.

Fix common hub and accessory setup problems

If you see “Home Hub Required,” the accessory or action needs a hub that is not available or configured for that use. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the iPhone or iPad doing setup uses the Apple Account associated with the Home, that the hub is up to date, and that it is connected to home Wi-Fi. Apple also says the latest Home version does not support iPad as a home hub. See Apple’s hub error troubleshooting steps.
