Before choosing a suppressor, confirm that you may legally possess and use one where you live and plan to use it, that the exact suppressor fits your firearm and ammunition, and what the full transaction will cost under rules in effect now. Federal paperwork does not override a state or local prohibition, and suppressor tax and transfer requirements have changed recently. Treat model prices and processing-time figures as dated reference points, not checkout quotes or guarantees.
Check whether possession and use are legal where you need them
Suppressor legality depends on jurisdiction. The ATF says it will not approve an application to make or transfer an NFA firearm when federal, state, or local law prohibits making or possessing that item. Completing a federal application does not make possession lawful where a separate law forbids it.
Check the rules for your state and locality, including the places where you intend to possess or use the suppressor. If you are unsure how a law applies to your circumstances, ask a qualified attorney or a dealer experienced with current NFA transfers before committing to a purchase. The information here is not a state-by-state legality survey.
Understand the current transfer process before paying
Form 4 and eForms
The ATF describes Form 4 as the application for tax-paid transfer and registration of an NFA firearm. Its eForms site lists eForm 4 as available for individuals and trusts. Your dealer can explain the steps for the specific transaction and help confirm what information and documentation are needed. Check the ATF’s current forms and eForms pages rather than relying on an older checklist or a past purchase experience.

Tax rules and court developments
A federal final rule issued May 8, 2026, and effective June 10, 2026, amended regulations to reflect statutory changes to NFA tax remittance for certain NFA firearms. Do not assume the historically familiar $200 suppressor tax applies to your transaction: verify the current law and the amount, if any, that applies to the specific transfer with ATF and your dealer. The available official information does not establish how every subsequent court development applies to every buyer or transaction, so confirm that point for your case before proceeding.
Processing-time figures are snapshots
ATF reported average eForm 4 processing times for applications finalized in August 2026 of 6 days for individual applications and 20 days for trust applications. ATF cautions that averages vary and some applications take longer. These are dated averages, not a promised completion time for a new submission; consult ATF’s current processing-times page when planning.

Check compatibility against your exact firearm and use
Start with the specific firearm, barrel, and ammunition you intend to use. A suppressor’s advertised caliber compatibility alone does not establish that it is suitable for every firearm in that caliber. Compare the current manufacturer specifications and manual for the exact suppressor with the firearm and barrel documentation.

- Cartridge and projectile diameter: Confirm the suppressor is rated for the cartridge and projectile diameter, not merely that its opening appears large enough.
- Barrel length and host limits: Check minimum barrel length requirements and any limits that apply to the host firearm or its operating system.
- Thread pitch and muzzle dimensions: Verify the actual barrel’s thread pitch and muzzle details using the barrel itself or the firearm owner’s manual before ordering a mount. A chart or thread-pitch tool by itself cannot establish caliber or pressure compatibility.
- Mount system: Determine whether the suppressor uses direct thread, a compatible adapter, or a matching muzzle device, and include any required components in your fit and cost checks.
- Firing conditions and ammunition: Review the manufacturer’s limits for firing schedule, host action, alignment, and approved ammunition. Do not infer that a model is suitable for a particular use just because it fits the threads.
Dealer guidance can help identify these variables, but the manufacturer’s current documentation governs the requirements for a particular model. Do not modify a suppressor to resolve a mismatch. ATF’s 2026 open-letter listing discusses repair or caliber changes under conditions involving preservation of the serialized frame or receiver and required markings, without making a new firearm; those conditions are not owner modification instructions. Use qualified service and current ATF guidance for repair questions.

Budget for the complete transaction, not just the suppressor
A secondary model comparison updated September 16, 2026, published MSRP figures from $489 to $1,129 for nine models; it did not list a published price for two other models in its comparison. That is a limited, dated sample—not a market average, a current street-price range, or a complete purchase quote.
Ask the dealer for the current total applicable to your transaction. Depending on the model and your firearm, the total may need to account for the suppressor, any current tax, transfer or dealer charges, mount or muzzle-device components, and firearm threading or other compatibility work. Current amounts for those additional costs are not established here, so obtain an itemized quote rather than estimating them from the suppressor’s advertised price.

Compare models by fit and intended use
There is no universal best suppressor without a defined host firearm, cartridge, barrel length, firing use, and budget. Compare models using the specifications that affect your actual setup:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Delivered price for your transaction, including required components and charges.
- Cartridge rating and minimum barrel length for the host.
- Mount and thread compatibility, plus the cost of any adapter or muzzle device.
- Length and weight for the way you intend to use the firearm.
- Host, firing-schedule, and ammunition limits in the current manufacturer documentation.
- Manufacturer service and repair provisions.
Sound figures are difficult to compare unless the test conditions and measurement methods match. Treat manufacturer numbers cautiously when the underlying methods differ; a published figure alone is not a sound basis for ranking models.
Quick Recap
Use this before-you-buy checklist
- Identify the jurisdictions where you reside and intend to possess or use the suppressor; verify current local, state, and federal rules.
- Ask a qualified dealer what transfer path and current tax or other charges apply to your transaction, and check ATF’s current forms, eForms, and processing information.
- Record the exact firearm, barrel length, barrel thread pitch, and ammunition you plan to use.
- Match those details against the current suppressor manual and specifications, including cartridge rating, mount, host limits, and firing conditions.
- Get an itemized current quote that includes required mounting parts and any applicable dealer or firearm work costs.
- Choose among models only after confirming both legal eligibility and compatibility for the intended setup.
