In Safari on macOS 27, create a group from all tabs open in the current window or start with an empty group and add only the tabs you choose. Open and manage groups from the sidebar; Safari’s optional suggested-topic organization is a separate feature that requires Apple Intelligence.
Create a group from the tabs already open
- In Safari, click the down arrow beside the Sidebar button in the toolbar. If the sidebar is open, click the Add Tab Group button instead.
- Choose New Tab Group with [number] Tabs. Safari uses the tabs in the current window.
- Type a name for the group and press Return.
This is the quickest option when the current window already contains the pages you want to keep together. Apple’s macOS 27 Safari guide documents this workflow.
Make an empty group and add selected tabs
- Open the Sidebar menu using the down arrow beside the Sidebar button, or use the Add Tab Group button if the sidebar is open.
- Choose New Empty Tab Group, enter a name, and press Return.
- Control-click a tab, choose Move to Tab Group, and select the group. Alternatively, drag the tab from the tab bar into the group.
Use an empty group when you want to choose which pages belong in it rather than collecting every tab in the current window. You can move additional tabs the same way.
Open, preview, and maintain groups
Choose a group from the Sidebar menu or click it in the sidebar to open it. To preview its pages, Control-click the group in the sidebar and choose Show Tab Overview.

- Rename or delete: Control-click a group in the sidebar and choose the relevant command.
- Reorder groups: Drag them into the desired order in the sidebar.
- Reorder tabs: With the group open, drag tabs in the tab bar.
- Remove a tab from a group: Close that tab while the group is open.
You can also choose a background image for each group’s start page and keep Tab Groups in sync across devices with iCloud for Safari. See Apple’s instructions for editing and customizing Tab Groups.
Named groups and suggested topics are different
A named Tab Group is one you create and control: you choose its name and membership. You can create one using the steps above without relying on Safari’s suggested-topic feature.

Safari’s Organize tabs setting instead uses Apple Intelligence to automatically group related tabs or suggest related ones. Apple lists three choices: Automatically Create Topics, Show Related Tabs, and Never. The first automatically groups related tabs; the second offers related-tab suggestions without automatically organizing them; the third disables this organization. Apple says Apple Intelligence is not available in all languages or regions, and usage limits may apply. Details are in Apple’s Safari Tabs settings guide.

Share a group or connect it to a Focus
Share and collaborate
To collaborate on a Shared Tab Group, each participant must be signed in to an Apple Account, have Safari set up in iCloud, and have two-factor authentication turned on. Participants can add and remove tabs, with updates visible to everyone in real time. Apple states that a Shared Tab Group can have up to 100 participants. See Apple’s sharing and collaboration guide.

Use a group with a Focus
You can select a Tab Group as a Safari Focus Filter in macOS Focus settings. During setup, you can choose whether external links may open in that group. Apple’s Focus guide for Safari Tab Groups explains the options.
