Reconnect backoff can make an outage harder to recover from when many clients follow the same retry schedule. It lengthens the wait between attempts, but without jitter it does not necessarily spread those attempts out: clients that failed together may retry together, creating fresh traffic bursts while the service is still overloaded.

How reconnect backoff can work against recovery

Backoff increases the time a client waits before trying again after a failure. Exponential backoff increases that delay after successive failures, usually up to a configured cap. This reduces how often each client retries, but a shared schedule can leave many clients synchronized. If they all disconnect during the same outage and wait the same intervals, their next attempts can arrive in clusters.

Those bursts consume server resources just as the service is trying to recover. If overload caused the original failures, the additional connection or request attempts can deepen the overload and prolong recovery. Backoff controls the pace of an individual client’s retries; it does not, by itself, guarantee that a group of clients will spread their attempts over time. AWS describes this synchronization risk in its guidance on controlling and limiting retry calls.

WebSocket and EventSource do not reconnect the same way

WebSocket: application code owns the retry policy

Creating a WebSocket starts a connection attempt. If the connection cannot be established, the browser fires an error event followed by a close event. The WebSocket API does not supply a general application-level policy for creating replacement connections; client code or a library must decide whether and when to try again. See MDN’s WebSocket() constructor documentation.

EventSource: reconnection is built in

EventSource, the browser API for server-sent events, reconnects by default when its stream ends. The stream can include a retry field with an integer reconnection delay in milliseconds. That behavior belongs to EventSource and should not be assumed for WebSocket. MDN explains the format in Using server-sent events.

Why jitter helps

Jitter adds randomness to retry waits. Instead of every client choosing the same next delay, clients retry across a range of times, reducing the chance that they all hit the service together. AWS’s explanation of exponential backoff and jitter uses illustrative contention simulations to show how randomizing waits can spread attempts. Those simulations are not measurements of how often production outages are caused by reconnect behavior.

Jitter is one part of a bounded policy, not a guarantee that retries will succeed. The retry delay should grow after repeated failures, have a maximum, and be paired with a limit on attempts or total elapsed time. Stop retrying when the user cancels, the operation is no longer relevant, or the failure is known to be permanent.

Design a retry policy around failure and user needs

There is no universally correct delay, cap, or retry count for every service. Choose values based on the service’s recovery behavior and how quickly users need a connection restored, then test both the outage and the recovery phase. A policy that is gentle on an overloaded service may take longer to restore an individual user’s connection; a more aggressive policy can increase load.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Increase the delay and cap it. Repeated failures should not trigger an unbounded rapid loop, and the maximum wait should be deliberate.
  • Add jitter. Randomize waits so clients that fail together are less likely to retry together.
  • Set a retry budget. Bound retries by attempt count or elapsed time, rather than retrying indefinitely.
  • Classify failures. Retry transient failures only; do not blindly repeat attempts for permanent errors.
  • Support cancellation. A retry should stop when the user or application no longer needs the connection.
  • Verify library and SDK behavior. Do not assume an existing client, SDK, or connection library uses the policy you intend.

AWS’s guidance on timeouts, retries, and backoff with jitter discusses the relationship between timeouts, overload, retry safety, and randomized backoff. Its recommendations are useful design principles, not a universal numeric recipe for browser WebSocket reconnection.

Keep retries from multiplying across layers

Retries may be implemented in several places: the user interface, a connection library, a service worker, a proxy, or a downstream SDK. If each layer retries independently, one underlying failure can produce many attempts. AWS Well-Architected warns that retries at multiple application layers compound and recommends selecting the layer responsible for retrying, handling errors deliberately, and monitoring repeated failures.

Protect operations from duplicate effects

A failed response does not prove that the server did nothing. A write or command may have completed even if the client lost the connection before receiving confirmation. If a reconnecting client replays queued commands, repeated attempts could duplicate an effect.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Make repeatable operations idempotent where possible, so applying the same operation more than once has the same intended result as applying it once. Otherwise, use a design that detects or safely handles duplicate attempts. This is especially important for writes and commands, rather than simply reopening a connection. AWS discusses retry safety in its timeouts and retries guidance and retry-call guidance.

What to check when reconnects keep failing

  • Determine whether the client uses WebSocket, EventSource, or another protocol; their reconnect behavior may differ.
  • Find which layer owns reconnection and whether other layers also retry.
  • Check whether the delay grows, has a maximum, and includes jitter.
  • Confirm that retries stop after a defined budget or when the attempt is cancelled.
  • Separate transient failures from permanent ones so a bad configuration or other non-recoverable error does not trigger endless retries.
  • Check whether replayed requests or commands can repeat side effects.
  • Observe attempt timing and recovery behavior during a controlled failure scenario, not only during normal operation.
