If you want to revisit Johto, choose Pokémon Gold or Silver for one of the original paired Game Boy Color adventures, or choose Crystal for its documented presentation additions and choice of protagonist. The old 3DS Virtual Console releases are no longer available for new purchase through the eShop, so your way to play depends on what you already own and which compatible hardware you can access.

What are Gold, Silver, and Crystal?

Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver are the original Johto sequels to the first Pokémon games. The Pokémon Company lists their original Japanese release date as November 21, 1999, and describes a new map and story with new Pokémon. Johto’s notable Pokémon include Ho-Oh, Lugia, Unown, and the roaming trio Raikou, Entei, and Suicune; these examples do not mean every one is exclusive to all three versions or encountered in the same way. The Pokémon Company’s Gold and Silver page lists Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance as supported hardware.

Pokémon Crystal is an enhanced Game Boy Color edition based on Gold and Silver, rather than a later remake. Nintendo describes it as a Game Boy Color exclusive. Nintendo’s Crystal product page records the original game’s Japanese release information and its historical 3DS Virtual Console distribution.

Should you play Gold, Silver, or Crystal?

Choice What it offers Best fit
Gold or Silver The original paired Johto versions, each with version-specific content. The official sources cited here do not give a complete list of differences. You specifically want one of the original versions or its particular content.
Crystal An enhanced edition with selectable male or female protagonists and animated battle sprites, according to Nintendo of Europe. You want those documented presentation additions and the protagonist choice.
HeartGold or SoulSilver Later Nintendo DS games based on Gold and Silver’s storyline, with added features. You want a related Johto game on DS rather than the original Game Boy Color experience. Nintendo’s HeartGold page describes the DS game as based on the earlier storyline.

The official material cited here does not establish an exhaustive exclusive-Pokémon or event comparison, or prove that Crystal contains every feature from both paired versions. If a particular encounter or collection goal determines your choice, check a version-specific reference before committing.

What is different about Crystal?

Nintendo of Europe identifies two central additions: Crystal was the first Pokémon game to let players choose a male or female protagonist, and its Pokémon battle sprites animate. Its page also describes a post-game scene in the Virtual Console version that allows an encounter with Celebi; in the original Crystal, encountering Celebi required special accessory use. That distinction matters if you are comparing the original cartridge with the later digital edition, rather than treating them as identical releases. Nintendo of Europe’s Crystal page documents these features and the Virtual Console release.

Can you still buy the 3DS Virtual Console versions?

No—not as a new purchase from the Nintendo 3DS-family eShop. Nintendo of Europe says purchases on the Nintendo 3DS-family and Wii U eShops ended on March 27, 2023. Crystal’s Virtual Console distribution began on January 26, 2018, but that historical release date is not a current purchase route. If you already have a digital copy, this store closure does not by itself answer whether you can redownload or set up related legacy services; the cited pages do not establish those details for every account or device. Nintendo’s eShop closure notice gives the purchase cutoff.

Can you play Gold and Silver on a Game Boy Advance?

The Pokémon Company lists Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance as supported hardware for Gold and Silver. Crystal’s original release is identified by Nintendo as Game Boy Color-only. For a used cartridge, confirm that the specific game and your console are compatible before buying; check the cartridge’s region, authenticity, condition, and save-battery status as well. A damaged or exhausted save battery may affect the ability to retain a save, and condition cannot be established from a listing alone.

Can Pokémon from the 3DS Virtual Console games still be transferred?

Nintendo’s compatibility list names the Virtual Console versions of Gold, Silver, and Crystal as compatible with Poké Transporter. It also describes Pokémon Bank as able to transfer stored Pokémon—including Pokémon moved through Poké Transporter—to the listed games and Pokémon HOME. This is evidence of title compatibility, not confirmation that a new user can acquire, install, or set up the legacy applications today. If transferring is essential, verify that the required apps and account access are already available to you before relying on that route. Nintendo’s Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter compatibility page lists the supported titles and transfer relationship.

How to pick a Johto replay

  • Choose Crystal if its protagonist choice and animated battles are the features you most want.
  • Choose Gold or Silver if you want a specific paired version; verify any desired exclusive encounter or event with a detailed version reference.
  • Choose HeartGold or SoulSilver if you are open to a later DS adaptation rather than seeking the original Game Boy Color games.
  • Before buying a physical copy, confirm your hardware and inspect the cartridge carefully. Before planning a transfer, confirm you have access to the necessary legacy applications.
