There is no single age rating for a cannabis-themed game. The answer depends on the rating authority, country, platform listing and the way cannabis appears in play. A passing reference may be treated differently from an on-screen depiction of consumption, and player-initiated use that improves a character’s abilities can matter more than either.
Read the age category together with its content descriptors, then check the exact edition and region. Descriptors explain the content behind a rating—or content that a consumer may want to know about—even when the age category alone does not reveal whether cannabis is merely mentioned or functions as an interactive mechanic.
Age categories and content descriptors answer different questions
An age category is a broad suitability signal. A content descriptor identifies a particular type of material that may have contributed to the decision or may be important to parents and players. Treating the category as a complete content summary is a common mistake, especially with games built around cannabis cultivation, trading or consumption.

| ESRB category | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Everyone | Content is generally suitable for all ages. |
| Everyone 10+ | Content may be suitable for ages 10 and older. |
| Teen | Content may be suitable for ages 13 and older. |
| Mature 17+ | Content may be suitable for ages 17 and older. |
| Adults Only 18+ | Content is intended only for adults. |
These categories suggest appropriateness; they are not legal proof of a player’s age or a guarantee that every family will make the same judgment. The descriptors provide the detail needed to interpret the category.
“Drug Reference” versus “Use of Drugs”
ESRB’s “Drug Reference” descriptor covers references to or images of illegal drugs. “Use of Drugs” covers consumption or use of illegal drugs. The distinction is useful when evaluating a cannabis-themed game: a poster, line of dialogue or background business may support a reference descriptor, while an animation showing a character consuming cannabis may support a use descriptor.
Do not infer the descriptor from a game’s marketing theme. A game can be about a cannabis business without giving the player an option to consume a drug, and a game with a brief item or animation can have a different content profile from a management simulation. Always use the descriptor shown on the current platform listing.

The Xbox listing for Weedcraft Inc., a Klabater strategy and simulation game, displays Mature 17+ with the descriptors Use of Drugs and Strong Language. The store description says the game involves producing, breeding and selling weed in America. That is a listing-specific result, not a universal rating for cannabis-themed games; another platform, edition or country can show a different decision.

The second descriptor matters. “Use of Drugs” does not describe all of the game’s content, and the Mature 17+ category is not explained by cannabis alone. Language, violence, sexual material, gambling, online interaction and other elements can independently affect a rating.
Story content is not an official rating decision
Common Sense Media’s editorial discussion describes two story-based campaigns involving cultivation and a cannabis business. It also discusses coercive or unethical choices in the business narrative. That is a secondary content assessment, not an ESRB or government classification. Use it as additional context after checking the official storefront information, not as a replacement for the rating authority’s category and descriptors.
Why the gameplay role of cannabis changes the analysis
When a game merely mentions cannabis, the reference may be incidental to the story or setting. When the game depicts a character using it, the content becomes more explicit. When the player chooses the use and receives a statistical or strategic benefit, the mechanic can become part of the authority’s classification analysis.
The Australian Classification Board’s published decisions illustrate this difference. They apply to Australia’s system and should not be presented as ESRB rules or as a prediction for every country.

| Game and report | How cannabis appeared | Australian decision context |
|---|---|---|
| Life Is Strange: True Colors (2020–21 report) | A legal cannabis dispensary appears in the Colorado setting. The references were not tied to incentives or rewards, and the Board found no interactive illicit or proscribed drug use. | The report’s consumer advice also covered mature themes, violence, coarse language and online interactivity. The example shows that a setting or reference is not the same as a rewarding use mechanic. |
| Wasteland 3 (2019–20 report) | Players could use a cannabis-like item that granted an ability-point benefit. | The Board treated the use as related to incentives and rewards. A modified version that removed the interactive use was subsequently classified R 18+. |
| DayZ (2018–19 report) | Players could use a cannabis joint that improved food and water statistics and lowered temperature. | The Board found that use acted as an incentive or reward and reported that the version was refused classification in Australia. |
These cases do not establish a worldwide rule. They demonstrate why two games with similar imagery can receive different outcomes: the authority asks what the player can do, whether the action is optional, and what benefit follows it.
How ratings are assigned and why editions can differ
Physical retail releases
For a physical game, the publisher supplies a content questionnaire and gameplay footage, including the most extreme material. At least three trained raters review the footage and recommend an age category, content descriptors and interactive elements. The submitted material therefore needs to show more than a typical play session; unusual scenes, late-game mechanics and optional actions can affect the result.
Digital releases
Digital games use a questionnaire process developed by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC). Digital ratings do not have ESRB Rating Summaries, so the store’s category and descriptors are the primary official information presented to a shopper. A digital listing can also be updated when content, platform policy or regional classification changes.

Downloadable content can receive a different rating if it exceeds the core game’s rating. A cannabis-related expansion, mission or item should therefore be checked separately rather than assumed to inherit the base game’s category.

How to check a cannabis-themed game before buying or allowing play
- Identify the authority and country. Look for ESRB, the Australian Classification Board or another named system. A rating mark without an authority or region is incomplete information.
- Open the exact platform listing. Check Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, PC or mobile separately. Confirm the edition, language, downloadable content and release status.
- Record the age category and every descriptor. Do not stop at “Mature” or “Teen.” Write down descriptors such as “Drug Reference,” “Use of Drugs,” “Strong Language,” violence or online-interactivity notices.
- Determine what the player can initiate. Ask whether cannabis is only discussed, shown in the environment, consumed in a cutscene, or available as an action controlled by the player.
- Check for gameplay effects. Note whether use changes health, temperature, food, water, ability points, money, inventory or another reward. A benefit can make the mechanic more significant to a classification authority.
- Review the rest of the content profile. Language, violence, sexual content, gambling, mature themes, online communication and purchases may matter as much as the drug-related descriptor.
- Apply your household’s standard. The official category is a starting point. Consider the player’s age, maturity, sensitivity to themes and whether you permit simulations of illegal or controlled substances.
A practical comparison framework for several games
When comparing two or more cannabis-themed games, use the same questions for each one. This avoids treating a high-level marketing description as if it were a rating decision.
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which authority and country issued the rating? | Categories and standards are jurisdiction-specific. |
| What is the exact age category? | It gives the broad suitability signal. |
| Which descriptors are listed? | Descriptors reveal drug content and other material that may concern consumers. |
| Is cannabis mentioned, shown or consumed? | Reference, depiction and use are different levels of interaction. |
| Can the player initiate the use? | Interactive control can carry more classification significance than a fixed scene. |
| Does use provide a benefit or reward? | Stat boosts and resource changes can connect drug use to incentives. |
| What other content is listed? | Language, violence, mature themes, online play and purchases may shape the overall suitability decision. |
| Is the information for the base game or downloadable content? | An expansion can receive a different rating from the core release. |
Common misunderstandings to avoid
“Cannabis theme” automatically means Adults Only
It does not. The rating depends on the authority’s criteria and the specific presentation. A legal dispensary reference with no interactive illicit use is materially different from a consumable item that grants a combat or survival advantage.
A Mature 17+ label describes only drug content
It does not. The Weedcraft Inc. Xbox listing also identifies Strong Language. Read all descriptors and any consumer advice rather than attributing the entire category to cannabis.
An Australian decision predicts the ESRB result
It does not. Australian Classification Board reports explain Australia’s approach. ESRB categories and descriptors are a separate system, and other countries may use different terminology or thresholds.

A story review is the same as an official classification
It is not. Editorial reviews can explain themes, choices and tone, but only the named rating authority’s listing supplies the official category and descriptors for that release.
The game’s original rating covers every later version
It may not. Platform editions, regional releases, patches and downloadable content can change what appears on a listing. Recheck the current version before purchase or installation.
What parents and players should take from the label
For a parent, the most useful question is not simply “Is this game about cannabis?” It is “What does the player see and do, and what does the game reward?” A reference in dialogue, a dispensary in the background, a cutscene showing use and a player-controlled stat boost represent different experiences.
For an older player comparing games, the same approach clarifies why ratings diverge. Start with the authority and region, read the category and descriptors together, then inspect the mechanic and the surrounding content. If a store page is vague, consult the authority’s entry for that exact release rather than relying on a trailer or user-generated description.
Ratings are guidance, not a substitute for knowing the player. A 17+ category may be appropriate for one older teenager and unsuitable for another, while a lower category can still contain themes a particular family prefers to avoid. The combination of official label, detailed descriptors and an honest description of the interactive mechanic gives the clearest basis for a decision.
Bottom line
Cannabis-themed games do not share one universal age rating. Check the named authority, country, platform and edition; read every descriptor; and distinguish a reference from depicted or interactive use. The way cannabis functions in gameplay—especially whether it produces a reward—can change a classification, while other content such as language and violence may independently raise the age category.
