DMZ is returning as an extraction mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with solo or squad deployments, a level-based progression track, and a Forward Operating Base (FOB) that players can expand. Call of Duty says the mode will offer missions, optional activities, rival Operators, AI enemies, and boss encounters; these are announced features, not independently verified gameplay. The game is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026.
What is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?
Call of Duty describes DMZ as an extraction shooter in a persistent, open-world combat environment. Players deploy as off-the-books assets into a contested zone to recover advanced military technology, complete objectives, collect loot, and fight AI enemies or rival Operators. A run ends with an extraction attempt: what you take out matters, but so does deciding when to leave.
The announcement says players will be able to deploy solo or with a squad. Changing weather, dynamic military objectives, and hostile forces are part of the announced setting. DMZ is described as a mode within Modern Warfare 4, not as a separately announced standalone game. Call of Duty sums up the intended tension this way: “In DMZ, players operate as an off-the-books asset behind enemy lines, where every deployment into contested territory forces hard choices about which objectives to pursue, what to secure, and when to get out.”

How DMZ progression and the FOB are announced to work
Player levels and unlocks
Call of Duty’s DMZ guide describes a Player Level range from 1 to 70. It says each deployment contributes to Player Level, while a dedicated progression track awards 3D Printer recipes, unlocks FOB stations, and provides other content through level 70. These are details in the official guide, not a tested progression cap or a report on how long leveling takes.

The Forward Operating Base
The FOB is presented as a command center for managing progression, preparing gear, and planning deployments. It is expected to grow as players complete Operations across Hajin, eventually containing more than a dozen stations. The guide names these FOB features:
- Preparation and management: Active Duty Operators, Stash/Loadout, DMZ Orders, Firing Range, and Survival Kits.
- Unlockable stations and boards: 3D Printer, Gunsmith, Vendor, bounty leaderboard, Boss Board, and Dog Tag Case.
The 3D Printer will use resources and ingredients collected during play to craft gear and upgrade FOB stations. The Gunsmith is described as using in-game DMZ Cash for attachments and weapon creation; Weapon Manuals expand what players can build. The guide does not specify the cost of individual items or the full unlock requirements for each station.
What can you do during a deployment?
Follow DMZ Orders
DMZ Orders provide mission directives and are intended to introduce players to the mode’s systems and story while directing activity in the exclusion zone. Call of Duty’s guide advises reading an Order’s requirements and preparing an Operator, gear, and route before deploying.

Choose or discover Dynamic Operations
Players can select a Dynamic Operation before insertion or start one by finding an Operations phone in Hajin. Completing an Operation grants DMZ XP and DMZ Cash, followed by a Supply Drop. The guide says the drop’s loot quality can rise from Common to Uncommon to Rare with successive successful Operations during one deployment; its contents vary.
One named operation, Hunt Operators, puts the player against a full squad of rival Operators. That makes the choice more consequential than simply accepting a mission marker: the objective itself can create a direct PvP fight.
Take on Side Ops
Side Ops are presented as lower-intensity activities. Examples in the guide include locating lost Supply Drops, repairing trucks, and climbing damaged radio towers. A tower can reveal the general location of a nearby Lieutenant, offering a lead rather than a guaranteed easy encounter.

Hunt Lieutenants—or avoid the signal
Lieutenants are high-risk targets with increased durability and distinct combat behavior. The guide warns that a Lieutenant may be active whether or not a player is tracking it. Defeating one can reward XP, cash, a weapon, and possibly a key to a special loot room.
Another risk is the Dog Tag Case: picking it up broadcasts the carrier’s position to all Operators. If the goal is to secure the case and survive, moving quickly toward extraction may be a sensible response to that attention.
Fight roaming Commanders
Commanders are described as bosses that can appear in multiple locations. They resist many standard weapons and may draw nearby enemy forces, rival Operators, or squads pursuing the same target. A successful fight can yield high-value 3D Printer Ingredients, XP, DMZ Cash, and progress on the FOB Boss Board.

How to think about risk and rewards
The announced activities create different reasons to stay in the zone: Orders and Operations offer direction and rewards; Side Ops provide smaller objectives; Lieutenant and Commander encounters promise valuable rewards but carry greater combat risk. Looting and fighting are also part of the core loop, while the Dog Tag Case can expose a player’s location. These options are described by Call of Duty; the available announcement does not establish how they will be balanced in live play.
A practical deployment plan, based on the announced systems, is to choose an objective, prepare the Operator and equipment at the FOB, and decide in advance what level of risk is worth continuing for. Reassess after major rewards or when a location broadcast or hostile encounter changes the danger. Extraction is a decision, not just the final step.
When is Modern Warfare 4 scheduled to launch?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026, and PC availability has been announced. The date is planned, not confirmation that the release has already occurred. The official materials describe DMZ as part of the game; they do not establish a separate standalone DMZ release.
