After a hair transplant, the scalp heals first; visible new growth takes months. Swelling, tenderness and small scabs can occur in the early recovery period, and transplanted hair shafts commonly shed in the first few weeks. Regrowth generally begins later, with results developing over roughly six to twelve months. Your surgeon’s aftercare instructions take precedence because recovery varies by procedure and patient.
Hair transplant recovery timeline

Why transplanted hair sheds
Shedding of the transplanted hair shafts in the first weeks is described as an expected part of the process by AAD and ISAPS. It can be discouraging, but it is not the same milestone as later visible regrowth. The published time windows are broad, and they do not guarantee that every shed hair or graft will regrow. What changes the recovery timeline?
There is no single calendar that fits every patient. ASPS says returning to routine depends on the operation’s length, complexity and type; individual healing also varies. When comparing timelines, check which milestone a source means—skin healing, shedding, first regrowth or a mature cosmetic result—and whether it describes a similar procedure and patient context. Aftercare and follow-up
Use your surgeon’s instructions for washing and other care rather than treating general timelines as a personal regimen. Can hair loss continue after a transplant?
Yes. Hair in untreated areas can continue to thin after surgery. AAD says a dermatologist may recommend medicine to slow or prevent further loss; whether that is appropriate depends on your circumstances, so discuss ongoing treatment with your dermatologist or surgeon. AAD transplant guidance.
