First identify the restore route—iCloud or a Mac/PC backup—and note the exact alert on screen. The fixes differ: iCloud restore requires Wi-Fi and power, while computer restore depends on the computer recognizing the device and, for encrypted backups, having the backup password. If setup has already finished, stop before erasing anything: an iCloud restore requires returning the device to setup, and erasing removes its current contents.
Start with the restore route and the device’s setup state
Are you restoring from iCloud or from a backup saved on a Mac or PC? Also note whether the device is still showing the Hello/setup screens or has already been set up, and copy down the exact error message. These details determine the safest next step.
- iCloud: During setup, go to Transfer Your Apps & Data and choose From iCloud Backup.
- Computer: Connect the device to the computer that holds the backup and use Restore Backup in the appropriate Apple app.
If you completed setup but want to restore an iCloud backup, you must erase the new device and return to the Hello screen first. Erasing removes the device’s current data and settings. Before proceeding, make sure you have saved anything on the new device that you need to keep. The erase path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Erase All Content and Settings. Follow the prompts, then start setup and choose the iCloud backup. Apple’s U.S. instructions for restoring from a backup were published October 12, 2026: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup.

If your iPhone or iPad won’t restore from an iCloud backup
Keep the device on power and Wi-Fi
Connect the device to power and a reliable Wi-Fi network, and leave it connected while the restore runs. Apple says a restore cannot use a mobile or cellular internet connection. If Wi-Fi drops, connect to a stable network and retry. Restore time depends on the backup’s size and network speed; there is no fixed duration that applies to every restore. See Apple’s iCloud restore troubleshooting steps.

Check for a software update prompt
If setup says the backup requires a newer version of iOS or iPadOS, install the offered update. For an iCloud restore, the device updates before it restores the backup. Do not interrupt the update or restore simply because the progress appears slow; keep the device powered and connected to Wi-Fi.
Confirm that you selected the intended backup
Sign in with the Apple Account that owns the backup. When the backup list appears, compare the dates and sizes and select the one that matches the device and point in time you need. If the expected backup is missing, confirm that a backup was created for that Apple Account and try another Wi-Fi network. If an iCloud restore fails, Apple also recommends trying another available backup if one exists.
Respond to Apple Account password requests
Apps and other purchases may have been made with more than one Apple Account. If setup asks for passwords for additional accounts, enter the requested credentials to restore the associated purchased content. If the screen offers Skip this Step or Cancel, you can defer authentication and sign in later, but related purchased content may not restore until the relevant account is authenticated.

If you’re restoring from a computer backup
Choose the right Apple app and connect by USB
On a Mac running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, use Finder. On a Windows 10 or later PC, use the Apple Devices app. Apple also documents iTunes for applicable older or alternate configurations. Connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a compatible USB cable; connector compatibility depends on the device and computer.

When the computer can’t find your iPhone or the restore fails
Work through connection and app problems
- Update macOS or Windows and update Apple Devices or iTunes, as applicable.
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, check that it is compatible and firmly connected, and try another USB port if available.
- Restart the computer and the iPhone or iPad, then reconnect them.
- Follow Apple’s device-detection troubleshooting if the device still does not appear.
- If Windows iTunes hangs or a backup never finishes, Apple says security software may need to be updated or adjusted.
- For an insufficient-space message, free disk space on the computer and try again.
Apple’s computer-backup guidance also suggests trying another computer or restoring from iCloud where practical. A corrupt or incompatible backup may not be recoverable through these steps; try another backup if one is available rather than assuming the damaged backup can be repaired. See Apple’s computer backup and restore troubleshooting.
Fix “restore backup requires a newer iOS version”
Apple’s support document, published September 15, 2026, explains that a backup may require a newer iOS or iPadOS version than the device currently has. The fix depends on which kind of backup you are restoring: Restore a device that needs a newer version of iOS or iPadOS.
For an iCloud backup
When prompted during setup, install the update. The device updates first, then continues with the restore.

For a computer backup
Apple’s procedure requires completing setup without transferring data, updating the device, and then erasing it to return to the setup flow. Erasure deletes the contents and settings currently on the device, so first preserve anything on it that you need. Then:
- During setup, choose the option to finish without transferring data.
- Update iOS or iPadOS on the device.
- After the update, erase the device through Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Start setup again, connect to the computer, and select the backup through Restore Backup.
If your iPhone backup is not showing up
For an iCloud backup, first verify that the device is signed in with the Apple Account used to make it. Check the dates and sizes of the backups that are listed, and try another network if the expected backup does not appear. For a computer backup, confirm that you are connected to the computer that holds it and that the computer app can see the device; then inspect the dates and sizes in Restore Backup.
Do not casually choose setup as new if you still need an older saved iCloud backup. Apple warns that setting up as new can create an iCloud backup that replaces a saved backup. If you have already set up the device as new and still need the older backup, erase the newly set-up device and restore from the saved backup as soon as possible. Apple describes this risk in its iCloud restore troubleshooting guidance.
Why data may be missing after restoring an iPhone or iPad
Check whether the restore or downloads are still underway
Finishing the setup progress bar does not mean every app or item has already arrived. Keep the device on Wi-Fi and power while remaining content downloads or syncs. Depending on settings and where the data is stored, photos and videos, messages, voice memos, apps, and purchased media may appear later.

Some information is synced separately or is not included in the backup
iCloud Backup does not contain every kind of information in the same way. Some data syncs separately through iCloud or another service, while third-party app data may need to be retrieved from the app provider. An iPad backup also may not restore messages and voice memos to an iPhone, or vice versa. Check the backup and sync settings relevant to the missing item before concluding that it is lost.
Check another backup before trying a different restore
If the missing item may be in a computer backup, inspect that backup before changing the device again. Back up the device’s current data to a computer before trying a different restore so you can preserve what is already present. Apple’s guidance on missing information after an iCloud restore is available from Apple Support Australia.
Choosing between iCloud and a computer backup
Use the route that contains the backup you need and that you can complete safely. Compare the practical requirements before starting:
| What to check | iCloud backup | Computer backup |
|---|---|---|
| Backup identification | Choose the listed backup by date and size while signed in to its Apple Account. | Select the listed backup by date and size in Finder, Apple Devices, or applicable iTunes. |
| Connection needed | Wi-Fi and power; cellular internet cannot be used for the restore. | A recognized Mac or PC and a compatible USB cable. |
| Software requirement | The device may need to update before restoring if prompted. | Keep the computer and its Apple app current; the device may need updating before the restore. |
| Password issue | May request passwords for Apple Accounts used for purchases. | An encrypted backup requires its encryption password. |
| Content timing and coverage | Some items download or sync after setup, and some information syncs separately rather than residing in the backup. | What can be restored depends on the selected backup and whether it contains the item you need. |
When to contact Apple Support
If the official steps fail with another network, available backup, or computer, contact Apple Support and provide the exact alert rather than paraphrasing it. Include the device model, iOS or iPadOS version, restore route, and the relevant backup’s date and size. If an alert identifies a corrupt or incompatible backup, do not assume it can be repaired; ask about your remaining backup and recovery options.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to erase my new iPhone to restore an iCloud backup?
If the device has already completed setup, yes: an iCloud backup restore starts from the setup flow. Erasing removes the device’s current data and settings, so save anything on it that you need before choosing Erase All Content and Settings.
Can I restore an iCloud backup over cellular data?
No. Apple says an iCloud restore cannot use a mobile or cellular internet connection. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power while the restore and any later downloads continue.
What should I do if my iPhone backup is not showing up?
For iCloud, confirm you are signed in to the Apple Account that owns the backup, check the listed backup dates and sizes, and try another Wi-Fi network. For a computer backup, connect to the computer that holds it and confirm Finder, Apple Devices, or applicable iTunes can see the device.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if my backup requires a newer iOS or iPadOS version?
For an iCloud restore, install the update when setup prompts you; the device updates before restoring. For a computer backup, Apple’s procedure is to finish setup without transferring data, update the device, erase it, then return to setup and restore the backup.
Why are some photos, messages, or apps missing after the restore?
Some items continue to download or sync after the setup progress bar finishes, so keep the device on Wi-Fi and power. Other information may sync separately or may not be included in the backup; third-party app data may need to come from the app provider. Check another backup before trying a different restore.
What information should I give Apple Support if restore still fails?
Share the exact alert, device model, iOS or iPadOS version, whether you are restoring from iCloud or a computer, and the backup’s date and size. Mention which networks, computers, or available backups you have already tried.
The Bottom Line
Before trying another restore, identify the backup by date and size, confirm the route’s connection and software requirements, and protect any data currently on the new device. iCloud restore requires Wi-Fi and power; computer restore requires device detection and may require an encrypted-backup password. If the restore finishes but content is still missing, keep the device connected while downloads continue and check whether that information was included or synced separately.
