First check the exact Pixel model and its update status: a delayed rollout, a download problem, and a phone that has reached the end of Google’s published support period are different situations. Open Settings > About phone > Android version to see the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. Then compare the model with Google’s current Pixel update policy. If it is still supported, check for the update and work through the basic download steps below. If Google says the model no longer receives Android version and security updates, repeated checks will not restart its support period.
Start by checking what has—and has not—stopped updating
A Pixel can show several update-related details, and they do not all describe the same thing. Google separates the Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update in Settings. The first two help you understand the phone’s Android software and security patch status; the Play system update is shown as its own field. Seeing a recent Play system update does not mean that Google’s stated Android version and security update period has been extended.
- Open Settings > About phone > Android version.
- Write down the Android version, Android security update date or level, Google Play system update, and build number shown there.
- Find the exact model name under Settings > About phone. Do not rely on a broad generation label alone; compare the full model with Google’s support list.
- Check Google Pixel Phone Help’s current page, Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel phones, for that exact model and its stated support period.
The Android security update field and the Google Play system update field can change independently. Record both rather than treating one as proof of the other. The build number is useful when seeking model-specific help, but by itself it does not tell you whether Google still supports the phone.

Check whether the exact Pixel model is still within its support period
Google’s current Pixel update policy, checked in 2026, groups phones by model. It states a period for Android version and security updates, measured from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the United States—not from the date an individual bought it. The policy page is live and may change as newer models are added, so check it for the exact model rather than assuming that a rule for one generation applies to another.

| Pixel models named in Google’s policy | Published Android version and security update period | How Google counts the period |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later phones | Seven years | From the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US |
| Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel Fold | Five years | From the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US |
| Pixel 5a with 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 4a, Pixel 4 and 4 XL, Pixel 3a and 3a XL, Pixel 3 and 3 XL, Pixel 2 and 2 XL, and Pixel 1 and 1 XL | No longer receiving Android version and security updates, according to the policy page | Google’s page lists these models as no longer receiving those updates |
The policy describes the stated duration; it does not give a universal end date in this article for every phone. To work out a particular model’s remaining period, you also need its first US Google Store availability date. Buying a phone later does not reset Google’s stated clock. For a replacement, therefore, compare how much support remains for the specific model—not just the number of years originally promised to its cohort.
Google’s support categories refer to Android version and security updates. They should not be read as a promise that every device will receive every update on the same day, nor as a personalized assessment of how safe a particular phone is for a particular task. Google Pixel Phone Help also notes that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. A missing new Android version on an older model is not automatically evidence of a fault.
If the phone is supported, check for the update and let the rollout finish
Open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the instructions displayed. Some Pixel menus may label this System update. If the phone reports that it is up to date, that does not necessarily mean an announced update has failed: Google says updates roll out gradually and depend on the device and operator. Its Pixel Phone Help says an update may take a few weeks to arrive on a device.

That gradual timing matters when comparing your phone with a notice about an update or with another Pixel. A rollout is not necessarily simultaneous across devices or operators. If the model remains within its published period and Settings has no update to install, check again later rather than concluding immediately that support has ended. If a model-specific issue remains unclear, use Google Pixel support with the exact model and the status details you recorded.
Prepare the Pixel before retrying an update
Google recommends a Wi-Fi connection and a battery charge of at least 75% before updating. These are useful first checks when an update is not offered, will not download, or appears not to complete.
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi.
- Charge it to at least 75%.
- Return to Settings > System > Software updates (or System update, if that is the menu label) and follow the on-screen steps.
- If the download did not finish, watch for the next update notification. Google says the device will try again automatically over the next few days.
A download and activation are separate parts of the process. Google says a Pixel update downloads and installs in the background, then becomes active after you restart the phone. If Settings indicates that an update has been installed but is waiting to take effect, restart the Pixel as directed; do not treat the unchanged version display before that restart as proof that the download failed.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
No update appears, but the model is still supported
Check the exact model against Google’s policy, confirm the phone is connected to Wi-Fi, and check Settings > System > Software updates. Since Google’s rollout can take a few weeks and depends on device and operator, a delay may be normal. If the update still does not appear after that period, seek model-specific help rather than trying steps intended for an unsupported model.

The download started but did not complete
Use Wi-Fi and charge the phone to at least 75% before trying again. Google says an incomplete download is retried automatically over the next few days. Follow the next update notification and allow the installation process to finish. Avoid assuming that an interrupted download means the phone has lost update eligibility.
The update installed but the version has not changed
Restart the phone. A downloaded Pixel update becomes active after a restart, so installation in the background may not immediately change the version shown in Settings. After restarting, revisit Settings > About phone > Android version to review the displayed status.

The Google Play system update changed, but Android security or version did not
These are separate fields in Android version settings. A change to the Play system update does not establish that the Android version or Android security update has changed, and it does not reinstate a published OS and security support period that has ended. Check the relevant fields individually and compare the model with Google’s policy.
The exact model is listed as no longer receiving Android version and security updates
Stop treating the absence of a new Android or security update as a stalled rollout. Google lists several older Pixel models as no longer receiving these updates; routine update checks cannot restart the period. You can keep using the phone or replace it, but Google’s support pages do not set a universal safe-use threshold or quantify the risk for an individual’s banking, work, or other sensitive activity. Your choice depends on how you use the device and what level of ongoing software support you need.
What to do if you keep using an unsupported Pixel
Google’s security settings page describes controls that can help you review the device’s security status. Open Settings > Security to see security status and any actions surfaced for the device or Google Account. Google also describes Play Protect as regularly checking apps and devices for harmful behavior, and identifies screen lock and Google Play system update among the security settings you can manage.

These checks are useful housekeeping, but they are not a replacement for Android version and security updates from Google. Do not treat a current Play system update, a screen lock, or Play Protect as proof that an unsupported phone has the same update coverage as a supported model. The official pages do not provide a personal risk score or say that a particular activity is safe on every unsupported device.
If you replace the phone, compare remaining support
Before choosing a replacement, look up the exact model on Google’s current policy page and check when it first became available on the Google Store in the US. Because the support clock starts at that availability date, a model that has already been on sale for part of its period has less time remaining than a newly available one in the same cohort. Do not infer the remaining period from the purchase date or from the model’s name alone.
- Remaining update period: confirm the model’s policy cohort and first US Google Store availability date.
- Your market and operator: Google says update rollouts depend on device and operator; check details relevant to your region and carrier.
- Your use: decide how important continued Android version and security updates are for your own needs. Google’s policy does not decide that trade-off for you.
If Google’s listed support information does not answer a model-specific question, contact Google Pixel support with the model name and the Android version, security update, Play system update, and build number recorded from Settings. A physical repair may address hardware damage, but it does not reinstate a software-update support period.
