Don’t drop a running back just because his touches fell in one game. First find out which part of his workload changed, who gained those opportunities, and whether the shift is likely to last. Then decide whether to start, bench, hold, trade, or drop him based on your league’s scoring, your alternatives, and the evidence from the next games.
Confirm that the role actually changed
Start with usage, not fantasy points. Compare the player’s recent games with his earlier role and look at several workload measures together:
- Snaps: Did his share of offensive snaps fall, or was he on the field for roughly the same amount of time?
- Carries: Check both his raw carries and his share of the team’s running-back carries.
- Passing work: Review routes, targets, and receptions. A back may lose carries but remain useful in a PPR league if he still runs routes and gets targets.
- High-value chances: Check red-zone and goal-line opportunities, which can matter more for scoring than ordinary carries.
PFF’s weekly usage report tracks measures such as snap counts, routes, targets per route run, carry share, red-zone usage, and situational splits. Together, these can reveal a role change that a single touch total or fantasy score would miss.
Separate workload from the box score
A low fantasy score does not prove that a player has lost his job: he may have had a normal workload but failed to convert it into points. The reverse is also true. A touchdown or long run can make a shrinking role look healthier than it is.

NFL Fantasy analyst Michael Florio wrote, “Usage matters much more than production when trying to predict future results,” in a 2025 Week 2 analysis. Treat that as a useful heuristic, not a promise: workload helps explain opportunity, but it cannot guarantee future fantasy points.
Find out which opportunities moved—and to whom
“Fewer touches” can describe very different situations. Determine whether the player lost early-down carries, passing-down routes and targets, goal-line work, or some combination. Then identify the teammate receiving that work.

- If carries shifted but routes and targets remain, the back may still have value in PPR formats, even if his standard-scoring floor has weakened.
- If he lost goal-line chances, his touchdown upside may have fallen even if ordinary carries remain steady.
- If another back is gaining snaps, carries, and valuable opportunities, the change may point to a more durable committee shift than a one-category fluctuation.
In NFL Fantasy’s historical 2025 examples, passing-down and goal-line roles affected the outlook for backs including Kenneth Walker III. Those examples illustrate why workload type matters; they are not current player recommendations or a forecast for another back.

Before treating one game as a new baseline, look for an explanation. Check the player’s injury and practice status, whether a teammate has returned or joined the backfield, and whether the offense’s game script or matchup affected the distribution of work. A committee may also still be settling.

These factors can change the interpretation of the same workload numbers. A short-term absence or game situation may explain a temporary dip; repeated losses across snaps, carries, routes, and valuable chances—especially when a teammate gains them—are stronger evidence of a changed role. The 2025 NFL Fantasy examples show how these contextual factors can matter, but without a specific player and team, no single explanation can be assumed.
Choose the roster move that fits your league
There is no universal start, trade, or drop answer without the player, scoring rules, roster depth, current injury news, and replacement options. Compare the back with the teammate taking work and with your best waiver alternative across the same factors:

- Expected snaps and share of carries
- Routes and targets, particularly in PPR scoring
- Goal-line and other red-zone access
- How stable the usage looks, including whether it depends on an injury or game script
- Matchup and likely game script
- The replacement’s opportunity and your roster’s needs
Start or bench
Use the role you expect now, not the player’s reputation or last week’s points. A back who has lost carries may still be a viable start if he keeps receiving valuable targets and your alternatives are weaker. If his snaps and high-value work have moved to a teammate, a safer replacement may make more sense. NFL Fantasy’s historical start/sit examples weigh role and matchup together rather than relying on a single touch count.

Hold when the change is recent, has a plausible temporary explanation, and you can afford to wait for more evidence. Consider trading when you believe the role has diminished but another manager values the player more highly—or when a trade can improve a roster need without depending on a return to his old workload. Base that judgment on the likely future role, not a single spike or slump in points.

Drop
Drop only when the player’s remaining role and upside are less valuable to your roster than an available waiver option. Compare the actual alternative’s opportunity with the back’s current workload; do not treat a reduced role by itself as proof that no useful role remains.

After the next game, update the comparison: did snaps, carries, routes, targets, or goal-line chances return, remain lower, or shift further to a teammate? Follow updated availability and usage reports as they arrive. If the role change is recent and you have a viable alternative, waiting for more evidence can be better than reacting to one game.
