If Windows 11 asks you to create a PIN again after every reboot, first check for available Windows updates, then recreate the PIN if needed. Microsoft says security updates or other system changes can sometimes trigger a repeat PIN-creation prompt, but that is a possible explanation—not a diagnosis of every case. Start by checking whether the screen asks you to create a PIN, enter an existing PIN, or respond to an error; the wording determines the right next step.
Check for updates and identify the prompt
Microsoft lists security updates or system changes as possible reasons Windows may ask you to create a PIN again after you already had one. Install available updates, restart the PC, and check whether the prompt returns. Updates may help, but they are not a guaranteed fix for every recurring prompt. Microsoft’s Windows Hello troubleshooting guidance describes this possibility.
Before changing sign-in settings, note the exact message and which action it requests:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Create a PIN: Windows is asking you to set one up again.
- Enter your PIN: Windows is asking for an existing sign-in credential; this is different from a request to create one.
- An error appears: Record its wording so you can distinguish a failed reset from a recurring setup prompt.
Microsoft’s guidance does not identify one universal cause for a PIN-creation prompt that returns after every reboot. The precise cause can depend on the Windows build, account type, update history, device configuration, or work and school management policies.

Reset or recreate the PIN from Settings
If you can sign in to Windows, use the PIN controls in Settings. The PIN is a device sign-in credential and is separate from your Microsoft account password; changing the password does not necessarily change the Windows Hello PIN. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing or resetting a Windows PIN.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > PIN (Windows Hello).
- If the current PIN works and you want to replace it, choose Change PIN and follow the prompts.
- If you have forgotten the PIN or need to create it again, choose I forgot my PIN and complete the account verification steps shown.
If you cannot get past the sign-in screen
At the sign-in screen, check whether I forgot my PIN is available. Microsoft documents this reset route for Microsoft accounts, not local accounts. If the link is absent, select Sign-in options, choose password sign-in, and sign in with the account password. Then reset the PIN from Settings using the steps above.
If the password sign-in option is unavailable or you cannot sign in, use Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance. Microsoft recommends restarting for many sign-in problems and describes Safe Mode as a diagnostic option. Safe Mode requires password sign-in; PIN and biometric sign-in are unavailable there. It is a general troubleshooting route, not an established direct fix for a recurring PIN-creation prompt.

Consider another sign-in method only if you need an alternative
Depending on the device and its configuration, Windows 11 can offer Windows Hello face or fingerprint sign-in, as well as PIN sign-in. A compatible camera or fingerprint reader may be needed. Windows also supports security-key sign-in in supported configurations. These methods can provide another way to sign in, but Microsoft does not identify them as repairs for the underlying recurring PIN prompt.
- Windows Hello setup information covers face, fingerprint, and PIN options.
- Microsoft’s security-key sign-in instructions explain that separate sign-in method.
When to ask IT or Microsoft for help
If the prompt returns after updates and PIN reset, or the available options do not match the steps above, collect details before escalating. This helps support distinguish an account or policy issue from a prompt-specific problem.
- Windows version and build
- Whether you use a Microsoft account or a local account
- The exact wording of the prompt or error
- Whether you can successfully recreate the PIN
- Whether the PC is managed by work or school
On a managed device, ask your organization’s IT administrator to review sign-in policy. Device configuration and policy can affect which sign-in options appear, as explained in Microsoft’s Windows Hello guidance.
