Weather can interrupt Starlink, but it is not always the cause. Starlink says significant weather can attenuate radio signals, and in its words, “Moderate to heavy rain, snow, and hail can cause momentary service dropouts” (Starlink Help Center, “Does weather impact my service quality?”). Typical storm interruptions should clear once the weather passes. If they don’t, or if the problem shows up in dry weather, something else is probably going on. This guide shows how to tell the difference and what to fix.
What weather actually does to Starlink
Starlink attributes weather-related degradation to attenuation, meaning the radio signal weakens as it passes through rain, snow, or hail. Storms near local ground stations can also affect service. Starlink says its laser-augmented satellite network can route traffic around storm systems to reduce the impact (weather help page).
The hardware is designed and tested for a range of conditions. Starlink still says extreme heavy rain or wind may affect the connection, causing slower speeds or a rare outage (Starlink Help Center, weather and extreme-temperature FAQ). Starlink gives no numeric rainfall threshold or dropout rate, so treat “moderate to heavy” as a description, not a measurement. Don’t expect guaranteed uptime in severe weather.
Troubleshooting steps
1. Check the Starlink app first
Open the app and review alerts and outage history. Starlink describes alerts for service outage, recent interruptions, and obstructions (Starlink Help Center, “What are the alerts on my Starlink App?”). A recent-interruption alert can reflect extreme weather, a temporary network issue, or obstructions. It does not prove which one.
#1 Best Overall
- Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
- Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
- Select from plans suited for households or travel
- Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
- STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
Run Check for Obstructions to see the dish’s sky view. Trees, buildings, poles, debris, or a recent move can all block it. If obstructions show up, a clearer mounting spot may help more than waiting out the weather (Intermittent Internet – Troubleshooting).
2. Decide whether one device or everything is affected
Compare the slow device with another one on the same network (Slow Speeds – Troubleshooting).

- BUILT-IN ROUTER WITH WI-FI 5: The Starlink Mini includes an integrated dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router for strong wireless coverage and stable speeds. A built-in ethernet port provides wired connectivity for routers, mesh systems, gaming devices, or network hardware. Average power consumption of 25–40 watts supports efficient operation in off-grid or mobile power setups.
- Only one device is slow: check its Wi-Fi band, its distance from the router, and whether a VPN is on. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but is slower. The 5 GHz band is faster close to the router. Try a speed test with the VPN off, if that is appropriate for you.
- Every device is slow or offline: move on to obstructions, cables, weather, and congestion.
A weak signal inside the house is a different problem from a satellite link interruption. Starlink suggests placing the router centrally and in the open, away from walls, metal, and interference. In a large home or one with thick walls, a mesh node or extender can improve local Wi-Fi coverage. It will not fix weather-related satellite dropouts (Intermittent Internet – Troubleshooting).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Inspect cables, connections, and power
Check that every cable is firmly seated. Look for kinks, exposed sections, visible damage, or debris. Starlink recommends official cables to avoid compatibility problems. Power equipment down before handling connections where the model’s instructions call for it (Suddenly Offline – Troubleshooting). Don’t climb onto a roof or handle electrical gear during a storm.

If you use Ethernet, Starlink says a cable below Cat5e may limit speeds. Read the rating printed on the cable before you replace anything. A Cat5e or better cable only matters if yours is below that and you are wired. It won’t fix a satellite-side interruption.
Starlink also lists a surge protector as optional preparation against unexpected power surges. It protects equipment. It does nothing for signal attenuation or local outages.

4. Deal with snow and ice carefully
Dishes have a snow-melting feature, but extreme blizzard conditions can exceed what the terminal melts over time. Snow piling up around the dish can still block its view. Clear it gently only if that is safe, and follow Starlink’s model-specific instructions (Maintenance and Troubleshooting). Starlink does not publish a performance loss per millimeter of snow, so there is no snow-depth number to aim for.

5. Retest after the weather clears, then escalate
Starlink advises waiting for the weather to pass and testing again. If service is still poor in good conditions and the steps above haven’t helped, submit a support ticket through the app. Include:

Is it weather, congestion, or your setup?
Compare the problem along four lines before blaming the weather.
| Question | What it points to |
|---|---|
| One device or all devices? | One device: Wi-Fi band, distance, VPN, or the device itself. All devices: Starlink service, obstructions, cables, weather, or congestion. |
| When does it happen? | Only in storms: likely weather. Only at busy hours: possible peak congestion, which Starlink says can slow service temporarily. All day, every day: more likely the router, Wi-Fi, or local setup. |
| What does the app say? | Outage, interruption, obstruction, or hardware alerts are clues, not a single proven cause. |
| Wi-Fi or Ethernet? | Wi-Fi: compare bands, distance, and coverage. Ethernet: check the cable category. |
Starlink’s slow-speed guide is the source for the scope, timing, and connection-path checks (Slow Speeds – Troubleshooting). Speed expectations vary by area and plan, so check your own account and app for what your plan should deliver.
Spend money only where it fits
- Replacement cable: only if you find damage. Use an official Starlink cable and confirm it matches your hardware. Third-party compatibility isn’t guaranteed.
- Cat5e (or better) Ethernet cable: only for a wired setup with a cable rated below Cat5e.
- Mesh node or extender: only for weak coverage in parts of the home.
- Surge protector: optional protection for equipment.
None of these will fix rain fade or an area-wide outage.
