If your Pixel Watch no longer wakes when you raise your wrist or tap the display, check Bedtime mode first, then verify the relevant gesture setting. Bedtime mode deliberately disables the screen, Tilt-to-wake, and Touch-to-wake. If the display is frozen or ignores every input, use Google’s restart procedure instead of repeatedly changing gesture settings.
The steps below separate a disabled wake gesture from a watch that has stopped responding, and account for newer one-handed gestures that require a specific watch model and Wear OS version.
Identify which problem you have
“Gestures stopped working” can describe several different failures. A watch that wakes from the crown but not from a wrist raise usually has a mode or setting issue. A watch that shows a blank or frozen screen and ignores the crown, side button, and touch needs the unresponsive-device recovery steps.

Turn off Bedtime mode
Bedtime mode is the most important check because it intentionally changes wake behavior. Google says that, while Bedtime mode is on, the watch screen, Tilt-to-wake, and Touch-to-wake are turned off. The watch may therefore appear defective even though it is operating normally.

- Wake the watch with the crown or side button, if either responds.
- Open Quick Settings from the watch interface.
- Turn Bedtime mode off.
- Raise your wrist and touch the display to test the wake behavior again.
If the watch immediately responds after Bedtime mode is disabled, no reset or accessory is needed. Remember that Bedtime mode can be enabled as part of a routine, so check it whenever the same symptom returns at a predictable time.
Check the gesture controls
After Bedtime mode is off, inspect the controls that govern waking and motion. Google places Tilt-to-wake under Settings > Gestures. Menu names and available controls can differ by watch model, accessibility configuration, and software release.
Verify Tilt-to-wake
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap Gestures.
- Find Tilt-to-wake and make sure it is enabled.
- Return to the watch face and make a deliberate wrist-raising motion rather than a small rotation.
Test in ordinary conditions first. Hold the watch in its normal wearing position, keep the display facing upward for a moment, and avoid testing while the watch is under a sleeve or pressed against a surface. A wake gesture is not the same as the display remaining continuously lit; the screen can still time out normally after it wakes.

If touch-to-wake or another motion command is the issue, open Settings > Accessibility > Gestures and review the controls shown on your watch. Google notes that the available accessibility gestures and their actions can change with software updates, so an option described in an older guide may not appear on every device.

Look for a control that is disabled, assigned a different action, or replaced by an accessibility shortcut. Change one setting at a time, then test the watch. This makes it clear which change restored the behavior and avoids accidentally disabling a different shortcut.
Do not confuse Battery Saver with Bedtime mode
Battery Saver changes power behavior, but Google says it keeps Tilt-to-wake enabled. It disables Always-on Display, which means the screen will not remain continuously visible, but a wrist raise should still wake it when the gesture is enabled.
This distinction helps diagnose the symptom:
- Always-on Display is off, but Tilt-to-wake works: Battery Saver may be responsible for the darker idle screen.
- Tilt-to-wake and Touch-to-wake are both off: Bedtime mode is a stronger suspect.
- No button or touch input works: Treat the problem as an unresponsive watch, not simply a power-saving setting.
Decide whether the touchscreen is frozen
Before restarting, try the crown, the side button, and a normal tap. If the crown opens controls or the side button produces a response, the watch is not completely frozen; continue with mode and gesture checks. If the display remains stuck on one image, stays blank despite a charged battery, or ignores every input, move to the restart procedure.

Do not repeatedly press the screen or assume that buying a charger, screen protector, or replacement display will fix a gesture disabled by software. Settings and modes are the first-line causes documented for this symptom. Hardware service becomes relevant only when the watch remains unresponsive after the official recovery steps or has signs of physical damage.

Restart a watch that still responds
Use a normal restart when the watch responds enough to open its power menu. Google’s procedure is:
- Hold the crown for about three seconds.
- Scroll to Restart.
- Tap Restart and wait for the watch to boot.
- After the watch face appears, test the crown, touch, Tilt-to-wake, and any other affected gesture.
A restart reloads the operating system without erasing apps, settings, or personal data. It is useful after a temporary software hang, but it will not override Bedtime mode or a disabled gesture, so recheck those settings if the behavior is unchanged.
Force-restart an unresponsive watch
If the normal restart menu cannot be opened, use the hardware-button recovery method. Google instructs you to hold the crown and side button together for about 35 seconds or longer, until the Google “G” logo appears.
- Press and hold the crown and side button at the same time.
- Continue holding them for approximately 35 seconds; do not release after only a few seconds.
- Release when the G logo appears and allow the watch to complete startup.
- Test the display and buttons before changing gesture settings.
If the watch does not show the logo, remains frozen after restarting, or repeatedly returns to an unusable screen, contact Google support. Persistent failure after the official restart steps can indicate a deeper software or hardware problem that settings changes cannot resolve.

Check support for newer one-handed gestures
Double pinch and Wrist turn are not universal Pixel Watch gestures. Google lists both for Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5 running Wear OS 6.1 or later. If you own another model or an earlier software release, these commands may not be available, and their absence is not evidence that the watch is broken.
Confirm the model and software
- Identify whether the watch is a Pixel Watch 3, 4, or 5.
- Check the installed Wear OS version in the watch’s system information.
- Install an available system update if the watch supports one, then restart it.
Feature availability can vary by device and software version. Google’s current support list is the relevant reference for whether these gestures should appear.
Enable and test Hand gestures
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Gestures.
- Open Hand gestures.
- Enable Double pinch or Wrist turn, depending on the feature you want.
- Perform the gesture as shown in the on-screen instructions and test the assigned action.
You can also manage these controls from the Pixel Watch app on a paired phone. If a gesture appears in the app but not on the watch, make sure the phone and watch have completed synchronization, then reopen the app and check for an available update. If the control is missing from both, verify the model and Wear OS requirement before treating it as a failure.
Use a controlled test after each change
Testing consistently prevents a false diagnosis. After changing one setting or restarting, use the same short sequence:

- Let the display time out completely.
- Raise the wrist in a normal viewing motion.
- Tap the display once.
- Press the crown and rotate it.
- Press the side button.
- If applicable, perform Double pinch or Wrist turn.
Record which inputs work. For example, “crown and side button work, touch works, Tilt-to-wake fails” points back to the wake setting. “Nothing responds” points to the restart path. This separation is more useful than changing several settings at once.
When a factory reset is justified
A factory reset is a later recovery option for broader errors, repeated pairing failures, or a watch that remains unusable after restarting and checking its settings. It is not the first fix for a disabled wake gesture.
Google warns that a factory reset erases apps, settings, and data. Before choosing it, make sure you understand what will be removed and that you can pair and configure the watch again. If the problem is limited to Tilt-to-wake, Touch-to-wake, Double pinch, or Wrist turn, exhaust the mode, setting, software-version, and restart checks first.

Contact Google support when the screen remains blank or frozen after the normal and forced restart procedures, when the watch cannot complete startup, or when buttons and touch fail consistently despite the correct settings. Include the model, Wear OS version if visible, the gesture that failed, whether Bedtime mode was off, and what happened during the restart attempt. Those details help support distinguish a configuration problem from a device fault.
A community post dated April 2, 2025 uses the wording “Watch tilt and touch not working,” which matches how owners describe this symptom. It is a user report, not verified diagnostic guidance, so use the official settings and recovery steps above rather than assuming that another owner’s cause applies to your watch.
