A hacked account does not automatically give someone access to every account in your household. But if the compromised account is your email, an intruder may be able to request password-reset links for other services; reused passwords create another route. Recover the account, shut down access the intruder may have kept, and check the accounts and people connected to it.

How one compromised account can affect others

Email can be a gateway because services often send password-reset links and account-recovery messages to an inbox. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that someone with access to your email may be able to use those messages to get into other accounts. That creates a risk, not proof that every account tied to the address has been accessed. The FTC’s account recovery guidance calls email an important part of protecting personal information online.

A second pathway is password reuse: if the same password protects more than one service, a password stolen from one may work elsewhere. The consequences depend on what the intruder can reach. CISA’s household example describes an email takeover followed by access to social media, bank, and retail accounts; it illustrates a possible chain, not an inevitable one.

Signs an account may be compromised

Look for changes or activity you did not initiate. A single unfamiliar notice is not conclusive, but several signs warrant prompt action.

  • You cannot sign in, or the password no longer works.
  • You receive notice of a password change, recovery email or phone change, or login you do not recognize.
  • Friends or family report messages, posts, or requests for money that you did not send.
  • Your inbox contains unexpected sent or deleted messages, or has forwarding rules you did not create.
  • You see unfamiliar devices, sessions, contacts, or account activity.

The FTC lists these kinds of warning signs in its recovery guidance and October 2024 consumer alert.

What to do first if your email or social account was hacked

  1. Use a device you trust. Start from a clean, updated device if possible. The FTC advises checking that security software is up to date and scanning the computer when recovering a hacked email or social account. Go to the provider’s official website or app yourself; do not follow a link in an unsolicited security message.
  2. Recover access through the provider. Use the provider’s official account-recovery process. If you are locked out, follow its recovery instructions or contact support through a known, official channel. Recovery steps differ by provider.
  3. Replace the password. Once you regain access, create a strong password that is not used on any other account. If the account offers multifactor authentication (MFA), turn it on.
  4. End sessions you do not recognize. Use the account’s security or device settings to sign out of other devices or sessions, where available.
  5. Check recovery details and account settings. Confirm that the recovery email address and phone number are yours. In email, inspect forwarding rules, sent and deleted folders; in social accounts, review posts, messages, contacts, and active sessions. Remove changes or activity you did not make.
  6. Warn people who may hear from the account. Tell contacts not to click unexpected links or respond to requests for money from the compromised account.
  7. Check connected accounts. Review accounts that reused the compromised password or use the affected email address for recovery. Change reused passwords to unique ones, and inspect financial and shopping accounts for unauthorized activity.
  8. Escalate based on what was exposed. If personal information was stolen, use IdentityTheft.gov for a personalized recovery plan. If a bank or other financial account is involved, contact the institution promptly. For suspected cybercrime, the FBI’s IC3 account takeover guidance provides reporting information.

Use unique passwords

Do not reuse a password across services. A password manager can generate and keep track of strong, unique passwords; the FBI recommends using a reputable password manager in its online safety guidance. If you create passwords yourself, the FTC’s October 2024 alert advises aiming for 12 to 15 characters or using a passphrase. Its broader personal-information protection guidance recommends at least 15 characters for self-created passwords.

Turn on MFA for important accounts

Enable MFA wherever it is offered, especially on email, financial, social, shopping, and health accounts. MFA requires another factor in addition to a password, so a stolen password alone is less likely to be enough. Available methods vary by service. CISA lists text or email codes, authenticator apps, and biometrics as examples; the FTC notes that authenticator apps and security keys are more secure options than codes sent by text or email. See CISA’s MFA guidance and the FTC’s account protection advice.

Keep devices and home Wi-Fi protected

Install software updates and secure your home Wi-Fi network. These steps reduce device and network exposure, but they do not replace unique passwords and MFA. The FTC notes that malware on a device connected to a network can spread to other devices connected to it; its protection guidance covers these measures.
