If an AI toy stops responding or won’t connect to Wi-Fi, check its power and connection status first, then follow the setup or restart instructions for that exact model. Pairing with a phone is not always the same as connecting to the internet, and reset buttons or sequences are not universal.
Start with power if the toy is silent or won’t turn on
- Check that the power switch is on and give the toy time to wake.
- For a rechargeable toy, seat the cable or charging dock as its manual specifies, then check the charging indicator. Hello Barbie’s setup guidance says to leave it in its charging station during setup. Mattel’s Smart Toy Monkey (DNV32) charges over USB; its red or flashing red paw light indicates that its battery is too low. - For a toy with replaceable batteries, check their orientation and use only the battery type listed in that toy’s manual. Playnitive specifies two fresh AA (LR6) alkaline cells for its plush; that size is not a general rule for other toys. Playnitive troubleshooting
- If the toy powers on but still does not answer, look up its model-specific restart instructions before holding buttons. For the Smart Toy Monkey, Mattel says to hold the power button in the foot until the light turns off. That sequence is specific to that model.
If the app cannot find or pair with the toy
First confirm that the toy is in its pairing or setup mode. Then check the phone’s Bluetooth setting and any app permissions named in the toy maker’s instructions. Some products use Bluetooth to find a toy before Wi-Fi setup; a toy can therefore be undiscoverable even when the home internet is working.
- Mattel advises enabling Bluetooth for Smart Toy pairing. If pairing still fails, restart the phone and try again.
- Playnitive says its app uses Bluetooth to find its plush and requires Android location access for the app’s Bluetooth/Wi-Fi scan. Permission requirements can differ by app and phone platform, so follow the instructions for your toy rather than granting or changing permissions based on another product’s guide.
- Keep the phone close to the toy and follow the maker’s setup flow. For example, Arclumo instructs owners to connect the phone to the toy’s temporary “Arclumo-” hotspot, then select the home Wi-Fi network and enter its password. If the toy won’t connect to Wi-Fi or has gone offline
- Check the internet. See whether another household device can get online. If several devices are offline, address the home connection before changing the toy’s setup.
- Restart the router if appropriate. Let it finish reconnecting before trying the toy again. Mattel’s Smart Toy FAQ says, “If you are unsuccessful in connecting your Smart Toy to Wi-Fi, we recommend restarting your Wi-Fi router to see if that resolves the issue.” Playnitive also recommends checking the internet and restarting the router. - Verify the saved network details. Re-enter the exact Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password using the toy’s app or setup flow. Hello Barbie support identifies incorrect credentials as a possible reason for its “I can’t find a WiFi network” message. Playnitive recommends running its connection setup again if the network name or password has changed.
- Move the toy closer to the router during setup. Hello Barbie support says a yellow flashing light can signal weakening Wi-Fi and advises moving it closer. Playnitive also recommends reducing the distance between its plush and the router.
- Use the toy’s intended setup network. If the maker instructs you to connect your phone to a temporary toy hotspot, return to that setup flow instead of looking for the toy in the phone’s usual Wi-Fi list and assuming it should connect directly there.
Wi-Fi band compatibility is model-dependent. The support instructions cited here do not establish a universal 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz requirement; check the manual or official support page for your toy before changing router settings.

Restarting is different from factory resetting
A restart attempts to recover the toy without necessarily erasing its setup. A factory reset or network reset can require setup again. Check the exact model’s instructions for the button, hold time and effect, and try simpler power, pairing and network checks first.

Mattel documents a restart for its Smart Toy Monkey and recommends factory reset if that restart does not work. Playnitive says holding a control for five seconds returns its plush to pairing mode and clears stored Wi-Fi settings. Those procedures are not interchangeable. When to contact the toy maker
If power, pairing and network checks do not resolve the problem, use the maker’s official support page. Include details that help support distinguish a power problem from a setup or network failure:

- The toy’s full model name or number.
- Whether it powers on, and the color or pattern of any indicator light.
- What the app shows and where the Wi-Fi setup fails, including any error message.
- Whether the home network name or password changed recently.
- Which checks you have already tried, such as charging, Bluetooth permissions, router restart or setup again.
