A sports stream blocked in your region is usually restricted by broadcast rights, not broken. First check whether the exact game is available where you are; if it should be, troubleshoot the service’s location detection. If the blackout is valid, look for the authorized local or national broadcaster, or see whether audio or a delayed replay is available.
Why is the game blocked in your region?
Live sports rights are often divided among local, regional, national, or international broadcasters. As a result, a league subscription does not necessarily include every live game in every location. The restriction can depend on the specific event, the service, your country, and your current location.
The NBA Help Center explains that blackout restrictions exist because local and national content providers have exclusive rights to show certain live games and content. ESPN and MLB also describe location- or rights-based restrictions in their official guidance.
What to do, step by step

Check availability for the exact game and location
Open the league or streaming service’s official schedule, blackout information, or location lookup. Enter your ZIP code if requested, or confirm that the service has your current location. The NFL provides a ZIP-code lookup for game availability, while NBA League Pass restrictions vary by location. Check the current listing for your event rather than relying on a general description of the service.

Find the authorized broadcaster if the blackout is expected
Check the game’s official listing and local listings for the broadcaster carrying it in your market. Depending on the league and event, that may be a local station, regional sports network, or national distributor. HBO Max Help advises viewers whose game is blacked out to check local listings; the NBA and WNBA also identify distributor alternatives for some affected games in the United States and Canada. Confirm the event, country, and market before choosing a service.

Troubleshoot only if the block appears to be a location error
If the official listing says the game should be available where you are, follow that service’s location troubleshooting steps. A VPN, proxy, or other anonymization service can cause an IP address to be blocked or incorrectly located. HBO Max specifically advises disabling those services in that situation. Location enforcement and troubleshooting differ by provider, so a generic device fix is not guaranteed to resolve the issue.

Check for audio or a delayed replay
If live video is unavailable, consult the league’s current page for that game. The NBA describes live audio and delayed on-demand availability for certain blackout categories. MLB’s terms say live audio is available through At Bat for certain games unavailable live, with At Bat included in MLB.TV. These options depend on the game and blackout category; they are not universal substitutes for live video.

How to choose among the available options
Before switching services or paying for another subscription, compare the options for your particular game:

- What you can watch: Confirm whether the option carries the game live, offers a delayed replay, or provides audio only.
- Where it is authorized: Verify that the broadcaster or service carries the event in your country and market.
- What access it requires: Check whether you need a TV-provider login, a separate subscription, or access to an over-the-air station.
- What location checks apply: See whether the service requires a ZIP code or device location and follow its instructions.
Providers and availability differ by league, game, and market, so there is no single service that resolves every blackout.
Would an antenna help?
An indoor HDTV antenna is worth considering only if a local over-the-air station carries the game and reception is adequate at your address. The NFL defines local games as games available on TV in your local market, but that does not establish that every local game airs over the air or that an antenna will receive the station. Check the station’s schedule and an address-level reception tool before buying. An antenna does not remove a subscription blackout or unlock an online stream.

Why a VPN is not a blackout solution
Do not treat a VPN as an authorized way to get around a blackout. The official guidance cited here does not endorse bypassing rights restrictions. A VPN or proxy may instead trigger an IP-location problem; if the service says it cannot identify your location correctly, follow its troubleshooting instructions, such as disabling the VPN when directed.
