If a game reports that it has run out of video memory, lower texture quality first, then test other graphics settings and check which GPU the game is using. If the game only stutters, do not assume VRAM is the cause: shader compilation, background activity, and other bottlenecks can produce similar symptoms. The right fix depends on the game, GPU, resolution, operating system, and exact error.
What “out of video memory” means
Video memory (VRAM) is memory available to a GPU for graphics work. AMD describes Radeon VRAM as onboard memory used by the GPU to render games and applications; game textures, shaders, and other graphics assets draw on it. Higher texture quality and demanding features such as ray tracing can increase the amount of memory a game needs. Integrated graphics work differently: they may share system memory with the graphics controller rather than having a separate pool of dedicated VRAM.
A warning does not, by itself, prove that the GPU is defective or that an upgrade is necessary. It can be useful to reduce graphics demands as a test and see whether the warning or stutter changes.

Try these checks in order
1. Lower texture quality, then other demanding settings
- Open the game’s graphics or video settings and reduce texture quality by one or more steps.
- Test the same area or gameplay that produced the warning or stutter.
- If the problem remains, reduce resolution or disable ray tracing if it is enabled, then test again.
Changing one setting at a time makes it easier to see what affects the symptom. The available labels and settings differ by game. AMD’s VRAM explainer illustrates why memory needs vary: its performance labs reported 11.7 GB peak VRAM usage for Far Cry 6 at native 1440p, maximum settings with ray tracing enabled. That was a vendor test conducted June 28, 2023, on a Ryzen 9 7900X system with 32 GB DDR5-4800, Windows 10 Pro, Radeon RX 6950 XT, Adrenalin Edition v23.7.1, and Smart Access Memory—not a universal requirement for games.

2. Check background activity while the game is running
Close apps you do not need, then use Task Manager to observe resource use during play. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance also recommends checking for updates and monitoring resources. High activity may help explain a slowdown, but background programs are not the cause of every game hitch.
3. Make sure the game is using the intended GPU
On a Windows 11 PC with multiple GPUs, Windows provides app-specific graphics preferences, including a high-performance option. Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, open its options, choose the high-performance GPU preference if appropriate, save, and restart the game. Microsoft documents this option in its Windows 11 graphics guidance. The option may not appear or behave identically on every device and Windows version.

4. If you use integrated graphics, account for shared memory
AMD explains that integrated graphics use unified memory architecture (UMA), sharing system memory with the graphics controller. This is not the same as a discrete GPU with its own dedicated VRAM, and in some situations it can be associated with missing or low textures or a GPU-requirements warning. AMD’s instructions for changing UMA frame-buffer size concern certain desktop systems; its UMA Frame Buffer Size guidance should not be treated as a general laptop fix. Check your computer’s configuration before changing firmware or graphics settings.
5. Consider whether a stutter followed a driver update
NVIDIA says shader compiles are commonly performed while a game runs and can cause gameplay stuttering. NVIDIA also notes in its Manage 3D Settings reference that installing a driver deletes the shader cache, so a game may stutter the first time it runs afterward. This is one possible explanation, not proof that persistent or severe stutter is harmless or cache-related.

Do not apply an old Windows hotfix to a modern PC
Microsoft documented a specific DirectX 11 “out of memory” issue on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 when a game ran fullscreen at a non-native resolution. The support page describes a targeted hotfix for that scenario. It is not a general fix for Windows 10 or Windows 11; see Microsoft’s support article for its stated scope.
When a GPU upgrade makes sense
Consider a GPU with more suitable dedicated VRAM only after diagnosis—especially if reducing settings resolves the issue but you want to keep more demanding settings. VRAM capacity is only one part of the decision. Compare cards against the games and resolution you use, the texture and ray-tracing settings you want, overall GPU performance, system compatibility, and budget. The evidence here does not establish a universal VRAM threshold or a specific model recommendation.

What to include when asking for tailored help
To narrow down the cause, provide the game title, GPU model and dedicated VRAM, system RAM, resolution and graphics settings, operating system, driver version, and the exact warning or error text. Also say whether the stutter began after a driver update and whether lowering textures changes the symptom.
