Do not treat an unknown, conflicting, or “no match” DNA result as a diagnosis, proof of identity, or final relationship finding. First preserve the complete report and sample details, identify what kind of test produced the result, and ask the original provider for a technical review. If the result could affect healthcare, obtain clinician-ordered confirmation from an appropriate clinical laboratory before changing treatment or screening. Relationship, ancestry, forensic, and legal tests require different standards for identity, markers, databases, accreditation, and chain of custody.
Why DNA tools disagree
DNA results are not interchangeable simply because they appear in similar-looking dashboards. A health report may interpret a limited set of variants in selected genes. An ancestry service may estimate geographic composition from a particular reference population. A relative finder may use a marker set and matching threshold that differ from another platform. A paternity or forensic examination follows a relationship model, identity controls, and reporting rules that are different again.
Two companies can test different variants or markers and apply different interpretation rules. They may also update their algorithms, reference databases, or classifications. A disagreement therefore does not, by itself, establish which report is correct. Sample quality, contamination, insufficient DNA, a mislabeled or mixed-up sample, and data-entry or processing errors are additional possibilities that the provider must investigate.

First response: pause and preserve the record
- Do not act on an uncertain medical result. Do not start or stop medication, alter cancer screening, change diet, or pursue treatment or preventive surgery solely because a consumer tool reported an unknown, conflicting, or unusual finding.
- Download the complete report. Save the result itself, the methodology or limitations page, the tested genes or markers, confidence or likelihood figures, and any interpretation notes.
- Record the sample identity. Keep the kit or sample ID, collection date, shipping and receipt information if available, and the provider’s report version and date. Save screenshots showing the exact wording before a dashboard changes.
- Keep both results. If two providers disagree, preserve the original files from each service. Do not edit a downloaded data file to make the formats match.
- Secure the files. Store copies in a protected location and limit access. Genetic data can identify you and relatives, so do not post the report or raw file publicly while trying to obtain help.
Identify what “unknown” or “match” means in your test
Health-risk or variant reports
An “unknown,” “uncertain,” or “inconclusive” health result may mean the test did not cover the relevant variant, the laboratory could not confidently read the sample, or the available evidence does not support a clear classification. A result can also be reclassified when scientific evidence changes. Read the report’s tested-variant list and limitations rather than assuming that a negative or unreported result rules out a condition.
Ancestry estimates
An ancestry percentage is an estimate generated from a reference population and a particular algorithm. Different services use different marker sets and reference groups, so regional percentages or labels can differ without either report representing a laboratory error. “No match” in an ancestry feature may simply mean that the service found no relative above its current threshold or in its participating database.
Relative, kinship, or paternity testing
Here, “match” usually refers to the statistical support for a specified relationship, not a simple yes-or-no identity statement. The conclusion depends on which people were tested, the markers examined, the relationship model, and the population assumptions. A non-positive result can have alternatives: for example, a close biological relative of the alleged parent may have been tested instead of the alleged parent, or the tested relationship may not be the one entered into the analysis.
Forensic or legal profiles
Forensic reporting distinguishes an inclusion or match, an exclusion, and a no-result or partial result. A partial profile may require additional testing. Identity, collection procedures, laboratory accreditation, documentation, and the rules of the relevant jurisdiction determine whether evidence is usable in court, immigration, or another legal process. A consumer upload is not automatically a legally admissible test.

Ask the original provider for a technical review
Use the support channel associated with the report and ask for a written explanation. Include the report version, sample ID, and the exact conflicting wording, but avoid sending more personal information than necessary. Ask the provider to address each of these points:
- Was the sample received, logged, and processed under the correct kit or case ID?
- Was DNA quantity or quality low, and were quality-control thresholds met?
- Could contamination, a sample mix-up, or a processing error explain the finding?
- Were the genes, variants, or markers you expected actually tested?
- Which relationship model, comparison threshold, or reference population was used?
- Has an algorithm, database, variant classification, or report template changed since the earlier result?
- Can the provider reanalyze the existing data, issue a corrected report, or arrange a redraw or retest?
- What data will be retained, for how long, and who can access it during the review?
Keep the provider’s response with the original report. If support cannot explain a discrepancy, request escalation to a laboratory director, scientific review team, or the person responsible for the case, where that option exists.
When a medical result needs confirmation
For a finding that could affect care, ask a healthcare professional or certified genetic counselor to interpret the report and decide whether confirmation is appropriate. ACOG states: “When a patient presents with a direct-to-consumer test result, medical intervention typically should wait for confirmatory testing in a clinical laboratory.” Jackson Laboratory likewise identifies consumer testing, unclear interpretation, and possible impact on patient care as reasons confirmation may be needed.

Confirmation generally means a clinician orders an appropriate test through a qualified clinical laboratory. The method may differ from the consumer assay because the goal is to establish a result that can be interpreted in the clinical context. Bring the full consumer report, not only a screenshot of the headline, to the appointment. The clinician will consider your symptoms, family history, prior tests, and the exact variant or finding before deciding what to order.

Do not assume that a second consumer kit is equivalent to clinical confirmation. A repeat consumer test can help investigate a possible sample or processing problem, but it may use the same limited marker set and interpretation rules and may not be suitable for a treatment decision.
Understanding a variant of uncertain significance (VUS)
A variant of uncertain significance means that available evidence is insufficient or conflicting about whether the variant affects health. It is not proof that you have a disease, and it is not proof that the variant is harmless. A VUS should not, by itself, determine medication, intensified screening, or preventive surgery.
A genetic counselor or clinician can place the finding in context using personal and family history and can explain whether the laboratory will issue an updated classification. Ask how you will be notified if the interpretation changes and whether your contact details are current. Do not ask relatives to make medical decisions from your VUS; each person’s result and clinical context must be interpreted separately.

Getting help from a genetic counselor or clinician
The CDC describes genetic counseling after testing as a way to understand what results mean and what to do next. MedlinePlus notes that a company’s support team or a healthcare professional may help explain a report, but support staff cannot turn an uncertain consumer finding into a diagnosis.
Prepare for the appointment by bringing:
- The complete report and raw-data file, if one exists.
- The provider’s methodology, limitations, and report date.
- Any conflicting report and the dates of both tests.
- A three-generation family history when the question concerns inherited disease.
- The reason the result matters now, such as a symptom, pregnancy, planned procedure, or family member’s diagnosis.
Ask what result would change care, what confirmation method is appropriate, and whether relatives should be tested. Do not order broad testing without understanding how an unexpected finding would be handled.
Privacy before downloading or uploading raw DNA
Review the provider’s retention, deletion, sharing, security, research-consent, and account-access terms before exporting raw data. MedlinePlus warns that downloaded data may no longer receive the original provider’s privacy protections. Uploading it to a third-party interpretation service can expose information about you and biological relatives, and it may be difficult to assess that service’s security or analytical quality.

- Check whether deletion removes the raw file, interpretations, backups, and derived reports or only closes the account.
- Understand whether relatives can be identified through matching and whether you can opt out.
- Do not upload another person’s data without informed consent.
- Remove unnecessary identifiers from files shared for technical support, while retaining the original secure copy.
Legal, immigration, and forensic situations
If the result may be submitted to a court, immigration authority, police agency, or other official body, stop using informal consumer comparisons as evidence. Ask the responsible authority or a qualified attorney in the relevant jurisdiction which laboratory and collection process are accepted. The laboratory should be appropriately accredited, verify each person’s identity, document collection and transfers, and report the statistical basis for the relationship conclusion.

The National Institute of Justice distinguishes match, exclusion, and no or partial results and notes that additional testing may be needed. A “no match” can reflect an incomplete profile or an unsuitable comparison, not necessarily proof that two people are unrelated. Never publish another person’s genetic information while attempting to crowdsource an answer.
Common failure modes and recovery steps
The dashboard changed after you viewed it
Download the current report and record the version date. Ask the provider whether a reclassification or algorithm update changed the result and request the earlier report if it is retained.
A second company reports the opposite finding
Compare the tested variants or markers, sample dates, reference population or relationship model, and confidence or likelihood figures. Then ask a clinician or counselor whether an independent clinical test is warranted.

Request the exact comparison used, the threshold, the number and type of markers, and whether the result was limited by a partial or low-quality profile. For legal use, ask the responsible authority what additional testing is permitted.
You already uploaded raw data elsewhere
Review that service’s consent and deletion controls, revoke access where possible, request deletion, change reused passwords, and document the date and scope of the upload. Future uploads should be made only after you understand retention and sharing terms.
A practical decision path
- Classify the test: health, ancestry, relative or kinship, paternity, or forensic/legal.
- Freeze decisions: take no medical or legal action based only on an uncertain consumer result.
- Preserve evidence: save reports, IDs, dates, methods, markers, and exact wording.
- Contact the original provider: request a technical review, reanalysis, correction, or redraw.
- Use the proper expert: clinician or genetic counselor for health questions; accredited laboratory and qualified legal authority for relationship or forensic matters.
- Protect data: review privacy terms before any download or upload and obtain consent from other people represented in the data.
An unknown or conflicting match is a signal to verify the test and its context, not a conclusion to act on. The combination of preserved records, provider review, appropriate confirmation, professional interpretation, and careful data handling gives you the most reliable path forward.
