If a digital game disappears from a store, first determine whether only new sales ended or whether the platform also stopped delivering downloads to previous buyers. Sign in to the exact account that paid for the game, verify the transaction, inspect the complete library and hidden items, and follow the platform’s current redownload procedure. If the title is still missing, ask the seller to confirm ownership and delivery status before pursuing a refund or legal remedy.
Your result depends on the platform and storefront, the account and region used for the purchase, whether the game was previously downloaded, the reason access ended, and the consumer rules where you bought it. A delisted game can remain downloadable for existing owners, while a game with working downloads may still lose online features when publisher servers close.
First, identify what actually stopped working
“No longer available” can describe several different events. The correct remedy changes with each one.

Do not infer the answer from the game’s public store page alone. A delisting says that new sales stopped; it does not by itself establish whether an existing purchase remains downloadable.

Collect the details support will need
Before changing accounts or deleting anything, make a short record. It prevents a support conversation from turning into a series of guesses and preserves evidence if a refund deadline is approaching.
- Exact game title, edition, add-ons and platform (for example, a base game versus a deluxe edition).
- Storefront and country or region where you bought it.
- Account name or email used for the purchase, without posting passwords or payment details.
- Purchase date, order number and the original receipt or confirmation email.
- Whether the game was ever downloaded, installed, streamed or launched on that account.
- The exact error message, error code, screen text and date and time of the failed attempt.
- Whether another console or device still has the game installed.
Take screenshots of the library entry, price screen or error. Keep copies of receipts and support replies. Do not assume that an account that currently uses the same email address is the purchasing account; platform account migrations, family accounts and regional accounts can make that assumption wrong.
Verify ownership before troubleshooting the download
Sign into the purchasing account
Log out of guest, family or secondary profiles and sign in to the account shown on the receipt. Open the account’s transaction or purchase history and search by the order date and title. If the transaction is not there, check other accounts that may have been used on the device rather than buying the game again.

Check the full library, not just the store search
Search the owned-games library and any archived, hidden or filtered sections. A title can disappear from a normal store search after delisting while remaining attached to the owner’s library. Check installed software as well: if the game is already on the console, the immediate problem may be an update, license verification or launch requirement rather than a missing download.

Confirm the edition and region
Receipts often identify a specific edition, bundle or regional release. A store can show a price for a similarly named edition even though the account owns another one. Region changes, account migration and licensing differences can also make an owned item appear unavailable. Record the purchasing country and the country currently set on the account before asking support to alter anything.
Use the platform’s own redownload path
Support instructions are not interchangeable. A procedure for one storefront does not prove that another storefront offers the same access or menus. Use the current help page for your platform and ask support to confirm the exact title, edition and region.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Nintendo says software marked “Purchased” belongs to the Nintendo Account currently in use. Its guidance for Switch-family systems directs owners to check All Software, load the corresponding virtual game card and inspect hidden software or hidden virtual game cards. If the title shows a price instead of “Purchased,” Nintendo’s troubleshooting is to verify the receipt or purchase history and confirm that the purchasing Nintendo Account is signed in.

- Review the account’s purchase history and receipt for the exact title and edition.
- Open All Software rather than relying only on the current eShop search.
- Check whether the software or its virtual game card is hidden, then unhide it if necessary.
- Load the game’s virtual game card and start the download.
- If the item still shows a price or remains absent, contact Nintendo Support with the receipt, account, region and screenshots.
These steps apply to Nintendo’s current systems; they are not instructions for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam or another storefront.

Other storefronts
For any other platform, begin with its purchase-history page and library rather than a public product listing. Look for labels such as owned, purchased, ready to install, hidden or archived, then use the platform’s documented restore or redownload command. If menus have changed, quote the title and edition to support instead of following an old video or forum post. Ask three specific questions: Is the purchase still attached to this account? Is redownload supported in this region? If so, what exact menu or entitlement must be restored?
Check whether a service or license ended
Search the platform’s official notices for the title, storefront, publisher, account migration and region. Separate these possibilities:
- Sales delisting: new customers cannot buy the game, but existing owners may retain downloads.
- Download-service shutdown: the storefront no longer supplies installation files or entitlement checks.
- Publisher-server closure: a downloaded game may launch, but online multiplayer, authentication, leaderboards or other network functions can stop.
- License or region change: a title may be withdrawn in one country, edition or platform while remaining available elsewhere.
- Account or platform migration: an old purchase may require linking or restoring the account used by the new system.
Do not delete a working installation while investigating. A redownload entitlement and the ability to keep using an already installed copy can be governed by different checks. Also, a download that remains available does not guarantee that every feature will continue to work.
What the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS example shows
Nintendo ended Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop sales on March 27, 2023. In its discontinuation Q&A, Nintendo said: “Even after March 27, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” The phrase “for the foreseeable future” is not a permanent guarantee, so it should not be read as an unlimited promise.

The same notice says: “As of April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication has ended for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family software.” This is the practical distinction: a prior buyer could still be able to obtain the files and updates while online play and other network-dependent functions no longer operate.
Contact the seller with a precise request
Use the platform or storefront support channel tied to the purchase. Include the transaction proof and ask for an answer about your account, not a general statement about the public store page.
- State the title, edition, platform, storefront and purchasing country.
- Provide the account identifier, order number, purchase date and receipt attachment.
- Describe whether the game was previously downloaded or installed.
- Quote the exact error and list the troubleshooting steps already attempted.
- Ask whether the entitlement is still attached to the account and whether redownload is supported.
- If access ended, ask when and why the delivery or license service changed.
- Request the available remedy: restored entitlement, a supported download path, or a refund review.
Never send a password, full payment-card number or one-time security code. If support says the purchase belongs to another account, ask what non-sensitive proof is accepted for an account review.
Refund rules are conditional
A missing download does not automatically create a refund, and a refund can remove the entitlement. Check the storefront’s policy promptly because deadlines often run from the purchase date.

PlayStation’s published US example
PlayStation’s US support policy for full games, downloadable content and season passes generally requires that the request be made within 14 days of purchase and that the content has not been downloaded or streamed. The policy makes an exception where the content is faulty. It also notes that buyers may have additional rights under applicable local law. This is a PlayStation US policy example, not a universal rule for every platform or country.
Consumer rights in the European Union
On June 16, 2026, the European Commission said EU consumer law already provides safeguards when digital content or services fail to conform to the contract and what consumers could reasonably expect. Depending on the circumstances, a consumer may be entitled to a proportionate refund. The Commission also said it could not, at that stage, propose a general legal obligation requiring publishers to keep every video game playable after commercial provision ends, citing intellectual-property constraints.
That high-level statement is not an individual legal decision. The outcome can depend on the country, contract terms, marketing promises, expected duration, accessibility, the reason for the shutdown and whether the content was faulty or otherwise nonconforming. If the seller rejects a request, consult your national consumer-protection authority or qualified legal adviser and preserve the written decision.

- Buying the game again: this can create a second transaction without fixing the original account entitlement.
- Using the wrong profile: a console profile, family member and store account may not be the same purchaser.
- Relying on a search result: delisted products can vanish from search while remaining in an owned library.
- Deleting an installed copy: you may lose a usable installation before confirming that redownload still works.
- Assuming online shutdown equals download shutdown: Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS example shows that the two services can end at different times.
- Assuming download access equals full functionality: server-dependent features can stop even when installation files remain available.
- Waiting past a refund deadline: document the problem and contact the seller as soon as the failure appears.
- Following another platform’s instructions: account menus, virtual licenses and restoration rules are storefront-specific.
A decision path you can follow
- Identify the platform, storefront, country and exact edition.
- Prove ownership. Match the receipt and transaction history to the signed-in account.
- Inspect every library view. Check installed software, hidden items, archived content and virtual-license areas where the platform provides them.
- Try the official redownload procedure. Record the result and exact error instead of repeatedly retrying.
- Classify the failure. Decide whether it is a delisting, delivery shutdown, account mismatch, region or license issue, or an online-service closure.
- Contact support. Request an account-specific entitlement check and a supported remedy.
- Review refund and local-law options immediately. Consider download status, purchase date, fault and the seller’s terms before submitting a request.
The most useful question to ask support is not “Why is the game gone?” It is: “For this order, account, region and edition, is the entitlement still valid, can the files be redownloaded, and what remedy applies if delivery has ended?”
