If a manufacturer will not sell you a replacement part, first identify the exact device and part, then ask whether the part is discontinued or available through an authorized repair channel. Check your warranty and local consumer protections before opening the device. If the part cannot be verified or the repair is unsafe, compare a repair estimate with replacing the device.
1. Identify the device and the part precisely
Write down the complete model identifier and hardware revision. Record the serial number if it helps the manufacturer or repairer identify the unit. Note any label, marking, or part number on the failed component, and take clear photos before removing anything.
A product name alone may not identify the correct revision. Parts that look alike can differ in connectors, dimensions, firmware support, or safety specifications. If you cannot read a part number without disassembly, do not open the device until you have checked warranty terms and whether the component presents a hazard.
2. Ask the manufacturer for a specific answer
Contact support in writing, or keep a transcript if the company only offers chat or phone support. Ask whether the part is temporarily unavailable or discontinued, whether an approved substitute exists, and whether an authorized service provider can order it. Also ask whether the repair is covered by your warranty and whether the company can provide a service manual or direct you to an authorized repairer.

Keep the response, support case number, purchase receipt, warranty documents, and any notice that the part has been discontinued. A written refusal can help clarify whether you have a warranty issue or simply need to investigate other repair channels.
3. Check warranty and consumer protections before proceeding
Review the warranty paperwork and contact the original seller before paying for a repair or opening the device. In the United States, FTC consumer guidance says a manufacturer cannot deny an otherwise covered repair under an unexpired warranty solely because an independent shop previously performed an unrelated repair. That is not a blanket right to force a manufacturer to sell every part. The FTC also says it may address repair restrictions that violate applicable consumer-protection or antitrust law. See the FTC’s consumer guidance and its 2021 policy statement. For state-specific remedies, consult your state attorney general or consumer agency.
In the European Union, Directive (EU) 2024/1799 creates a repair obligation only for goods covered by specified EU rules and subject to the directive’s conditions. For covered goods, consumers may seek repair from a repairer of their choice. It does not cover every device or guarantee access to every part. Check the product category and your country’s current application of the rules in the directive’s consolidated text and the European Commission’s summary dated July 31, 2026.
Rules differ by country, state, product category, warranty, and the reason a repair was refused. If a significant amount of money or a safety issue is involved, seek guidance from the relevant consumer-protection authority before proceeding.

4. Look for a verified part or repair channel
Search using the exact model, revision, and part number rather than the product name alone. An online listing that says “fits” is not proof that a part is compatible. Ask the seller or repairer to confirm the specific revision and check the return policy before buying.
- Authorized distributor or service provider: Ask whether it can order the part even if the manufacturer’s consumer store does not list it.
- Specialist parts seller: Request written compatibility confirmation and details about the part’s condition, testing, and returns.
- Used part or donor device: Verify the part number and revision before purchase. A donor device with a similar model name may contain a different component.
- Independent repair shop: Ask whether it can source the part, perform required diagnostics or calibration, and explain any effect on warranty coverage.
Parts access can be a genuine barrier: the FTC’s 2021 report identifies limited spare-parts availability, difficult-to-replace components, and unavailable diagnostic software as repair obstacles. 5. Get a repair estimate when the work is specialized
Use an independent repairer when the job requires proprietary diagnostics, calibration, delicate disassembly, or work beyond your experience. Before authorizing service, ask for:
- the exact part the shop plans to install and whether it is new, used, or refurbished;
- the work included in the estimate, including diagnostics and calibration;
- the expected turnaround time and what happens if the part does not fix the problem;
- the repair warranty and any exclusions; and
- whether the repair could affect existing warranty coverage, data, or device safety.
Compare the complete estimate, including shipping, diagnostic charges, and any likely follow-up work, rather than comparing the part price alone.

6. Attempt DIY repair only when the risks are manageable
DIY is reasonable only when you have confirmed the part’s compatibility, can find safe disassembly instructions for the exact model, and have the right skills. A precision screwdriver set may help with some small-device repairs, but first check the fastener type; it is not a universal tool recommendation. Keep track of screws and connectors, and avoid forcing clips or cables.
Stop and use a qualified repairer if the job involves high-voltage components, a swollen battery, a sealed pressure system, or another hazard outside your training. If the device contains important data, make a backup before service when possible and ask how the repair could affect it.
7. Compare repair with replacement
Decide using the full cost and practical consequences, not just whether a part can be found. The FTC recommends weighing a product’s expected lifespan, likely failures, and repair difficulty when considering repair options.

- Remaining lifespan: A costly repair may be less attractive if other components are near the end of their useful life.
- Rights and data: Account for warranty or statutory protections, and the value of preserving device data.
Manufacturer refusal alone does not determine whether a repair is possible or worthwhile. Verify the part and repair route first; if neither can be established safely, use the estimate and expected remaining lifespan to decide whether replacement makes more sense.
