If your tap water suddenly looks cloudy or discolored, smells unusual, or otherwise changes, check your water utility’s current alerts and contact the utility if no advisory is posted. Follow the notice exactly: boil-water, do-not-drink, and do-not-use advisories are not interchangeable. Appearance and odor cannot tell you whether water is safe or whether it contains lead.
What should you do first when tap water changes?
- Check your water utility’s current notices. Look at its website or other official alert channels for a water-quality advisory or service update. The U.S. EPA advises customers to contact their water system if they suspect contamination and no advisory has been issued. See the EPA’s customer guidance on water decontamination.
- Follow the specific notice. Use bottled water or take other precautions if the notice directs you to. Do not assume boiling is appropriate: some incidents call for a different restriction.
- If there is no notice, contact the utility before treating or using the water as safe. Describe what changed, when it began, and whether nearby households are affected. The utility can advise whether the issue is known and what steps, if any, to take.
If your utility recommends bottled drinking water during an interruption or advisory, use it according to the notice. The right response depends on the incident and local instructions.
What do boil-water, do-not-drink, and do-not-use advisories mean?
These notices address different conditions and restrictions. A boil-water advisory calls for boiling water as directed by local authorities to address disease-causing microorganisms. A do-not-drink notice means not to drink the water under the stated conditions; boiling may not make it safe. A do-not-use notice can prohibit uses beyond drinking, so follow its specific directions.
The exact activities covered depend on the notice. Do not substitute general online advice for the instructions from your water system or local authorities. The EPA describes these advisory types in its customer FAQ.

Why is my tap water cloudy, discolored, or strange-smelling?
Changes in appearance, taste, or odor can be signs of a water-quality issue, but they do not identify its cause or establish whether the water is safe. The EPA notes that some contaminants above secondary, aesthetic standards may affect water’s clarity, color, taste, or smell. Those standards address nuisance qualities and, in the general case described by the EPA, are guidance rather than federally enforceable requirements. Read the agency’s secondary drinking water standards guidance.
Cloudiness in particular is not a reliable safety test. It can also make disinfection less effective if emergency treatment is needed. The EPA’s emergency procedure says to let cloudy water settle and filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter before disinfection. That is a step in an emergency treatment procedure—not a diagnosis of the tap water or proof that it is safe to drink.

Is cloudy or discolored tap water safe to drink?
You cannot determine safety from appearance or smell alone. Odor-free water is not necessarily safe, and water that looks rusty or cloudy does not by itself prove a specific contaminant is present. If the change is sudden, check for an official notice and ask your utility for guidance rather than relying on your senses.

No. The EPA states, “You cannot see, taste, or smell lead in drinking water.” Unusual odor or slight discoloration cannot confirm or rule out lead. For information about your public water system, consult its Consumer Confidence Report and ask the utility or your state’s drinking-water authority about testing through a state-certified laboratory. See the EPA’s drinking-water FAQ on unfamiliar odor and discoloration.

Should you boil discolored or unusual-smelling water?
Do not boil water just because it looks, tastes, or smells different. Boiling can kill many disease-causing organisms when official emergency instructions call for it, but it does not remove heavy metals, salts, or most other chemicals. It is not an all-purpose response to unknown contamination. Follow the local notice, which may instead tell you not to drink or use the water.
The EPA’s emergency disinfection guidance explains both the uses and limits of boiling and other emergency disinfection methods. If that procedure applies and the water is cloudy, follow its directions for settling and filtering before disinfection.

How do you get tap water tested?
Testing is most useful when it answers a specific question, such as whether a suspected contaminant is present. Ask your utility or state drinking-water authority how to find a state-certified drinking-water laboratory and which test is appropriate for your concern. The right test depends on the suspected contaminant and circumstances; a general test should not be assumed to cover every possible issue.

What should you do after a water advisory ends?
Wait for the water system’s instructions about returning to normal use. The utility should say whether household plumbing or appliances need flushing, and how and to what extent. Steps can vary by incident and may cover faucets, service lines, or connected appliances. Do not apply a universal flushing duration; follow the local directions in the advisory update. The EPA discusses post-advisory flushing in its customer FAQ.
