If your Samsung Galaxy phone does not detect its microSD card, work through the checks in a fixed order. First confirm that the exact model has a card slot. Then reseat and inspect the card, test it in another device, and only after that try software steps. A card that reads in another device points to the phone. A card that fails everywhere points to the card. A known-good, compatible card that still fails in a supported phone points to hardware that needs Samsung service. Back up and format only after these tests, because formatting erases everything on the card.
Start with the phone model, not the card
Samsung states that not all Galaxy phones and tablets support microSD. A model without a card slot has nowhere to insert a card, so buying a different card will not solve the problem. Some models use a combined SIM and microSD tray, and some use a SIM-only tray. Check your exact model number in Settings > About phone, then confirm in the official specifications or manual for that model whether a microSD slot exists and what maximum capacity it supports.
Capacity limits are model-specific. Samsung’s general card-type overview groups cards into three categories, shown below. These are category ranges from a general guide, not a promise that every phone supports the full range.

| Card category | Capacity range in Samsung’s general overview | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| microSD | Up to 2 GB | Adequate for light still-photo use |
| microSDHC | Up to 32 GB | Adequate for less demanding still photography |
| microSDXC | Above 32 GB, up to 2 TB | Samsung recommends it for high-resolution video because of capacity and read/write speed |
Power off, reseat, and inspect the card
Most “not detected” cases start with a card that has shifted, picked up dust, or sits in the tray incorrectly. Work through these steps in order:
#1 Best Overall
- READ/WRITE SPEEDS UP TO 180/130 MB/S: Load fast and play faster. With read and write speeds of up to 180 MB/s and 130 MB/s¹, you can sprint through load screens and quickly jump between games.
- STORAGE CAPACITIES FROM 128GB TO 1TB: Level up your gaming library with a wide range of storage options, from 128GB to 1TB—including your high-res files, photos, and 4K videos.
- EXTENSIVE COMPATBILITY: Sonic and his friends power up everything you play on from original Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck to action cams and drones. All Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus microSD cards include a full size SD adapter.
- 6-PROOF PROTECTION WITH 10-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY: The Sonic the HedgehogTM PRO Plus microSD card stands up to life's biggest bosses—like water and extreme temperatures. ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹
- MAGICIAN SOFTWARE: Samsung Magician Software helps you unlock unstoppable Sonic the HedgehogTM PRO Plus microSD card performance. It includes product authenticity verification and drive health monitoring.¹⁰
- Power the phone off completely. Do not remove the tray while the phone is on.
- Insert the ejector tool into the small hole beside the tray and press until it releases. Use only the tray opening. Do not push into the speaker or microphone holes, which can damage the phone.
- Inspect the card and the empty tray for dust, cracks, bent contacts, or moisture. If the card is dusty, wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquids or abrasives.
- Reseat the card in the tray in the orientation the tray indicates, then slide the tray fully back into the phone until it sits flush.
- Power the phone on. Button positions and on-screen prompts vary by model, so follow the instructions on the screen if they differ from what you expect.
After restarting, open the storage section of Settings, or Galaxy Storage, and check whether the card appears. If it does, the problem was almost certainly a seating or contact issue. If it does not, continue to the next test.
Test the card in another device
This is the most useful diagnostic step because it separates a card fault from a phone fault. Insert the card into another compatible phone, tablet, or a computer with a suitable card reader. Use a device you trust, and do not format anything during this test.

| What happens in the other device | Most likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The card reads normally and its files are visible | The Samsung phone or its software | Continue to the software checks, then Samsung service if the fault persists |
| The card does not read in any device | The card is damaged or failing | Back up anything readable, then replace the card |
| The card reads on a computer but not on the Samsung phone | A file system Android does not support | Check the file system before doing anything else |
A computer can read formats that Android cannot, so a successful read on a PC does not prove the card is in a format your Samsung phone supports. Check the file system as described below.

Try the software checks
Run these checks only after the card has passed the reseat and cross-device tests. They are reversible and do not erase data.

- Restart the phone. Press and hold the Side key and Volume down together, then select Restart. Button combinations vary by model.
- Update the software. Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Samsung’s regional troubleshooting guidance also advises keeping related apps up to date.
- Start in Safe mode. Press and hold the Side key, press and hold the Power off option, then tap Safe mode. Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the card appears there, a recently installed app is the likely cause. Uninstall or disable the most recent apps one at a time, restarting after each change. Restart normally to leave Safe mode. Menu labels vary by model and software version.
Back up before you format
Formatting deletes all data on the card. Samsung’s support page for microSD states: “Formatting will erase all data stored on the SD card.” If the card is readable, copy anything you need to phone storage, a computer, or cloud storage before going further.
When the backup is complete, formatting is offered from the card’s entry in Galaxy Storage settings or from the My Files app, depending on model and software. If the phone cannot format the card, the SD Association’s Memory Card Formatter for PC or Mac is a option that Samsung mentions as an alternative.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
Choose the file system carefully. Samsung’s compatibility guidance lists the following:
| File system | Samsung compatibility guidance | Limits to know |
|---|---|---|
| exFAT | Compatible, and the preferred choice | Use this for most cards |
| FAT32 | Compatible | Available for cards under 32 GB; does not support individual files larger than 4 GB |
| NTFS | Not compatible | Will not work on the phone |
| APFS | Not compatible | Will not work on the phone |
Check the card for adoptable storage history
Samsung states that its Android devices do not support Android’s Adoptable storage feature. A microSD card that was set up as adoptable storage on another phone can be encrypted and may not be portable to a Samsung device. Samsung warns that removing that setup may require a factory reset of the phone and formatting the card. If the card was used this way before and holds data you care about, back it up through the other device first, and do not reset the Samsung phone until you have a copy.

Decide whether to replace the card or call Samsung
Use the results of your tests to choose the next step:
- The card fails in several devices and does not read after the backup and format steps: replace the card. Confirm that your exact phone model supports microSD and check its maximum capacity before buying.
- A known-good, compatible card still fails in the phone: the phone, its slot, or its tray may be damaged. Contact Samsung support or a Samsung service center.
- The tray is stuck, bent, or damaged: stop trying to force it out. Contact Samsung support or a service center.
If you replace the card, compare the options against these factors:
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Phone support | Your exact model has a microSD slot |
| Maximum capacity | The limit in your model’s specifications |
| Capacity category | microSDHC for up to 32 GB, microSDXC above 32 GB |
| Speed class | Match it to the use: microSDXC for high-resolution video, while microSD or microSDHC can suffice for less demanding still photography, according to Samsung |
| Authenticity and reliability | Buy from a seller you trust, since counterfeit or unreliable cards cause the same symptoms as failing hardware |
Sources and model differences
This guidance draws on Samsung’s US support pages for microSD compatibility and troubleshooting, and on Samsung Saudi Arabia’s English troubleshooting page, whose displayed update date is April 27, 2026. Menu names, button combinations, and screens vary by carrier, software version, and device. For a repair, the exact model’s manual and Samsung’s current support information take priority over the general steps above.
