If your Samsung phone will not connect abroad, first check whether it has no cellular service or whether calls and texts work but mobile internet does not. These symptoms point to different fixes. Check the SIM and roaming settings, restart the phone, then ask your home carrier to confirm that your line and a local partner network are authorized. Menu names and available controls vary by Galaxy model, software, carrier, and region.
First identify what is not working
Check the status bar for a network name, then test calls, texts, and mobile data separately. This is a useful diagnostic distinction, not a definitive diagnosis: a phone may show a network but still lack permission or settings for data.
- No service or no network name: The phone may not recognize the SIM or eSIM, register on a local network, have authorization to roam, or be within coverage of a compatible network.
- Calls or texts work, but mobile internet does not: Check mobile data, data roaming, the plan’s roaming permission, and the APN settings.
- Service works in some places but not others: Local coverage or the available partner network may be the issue.
Samsung lists disabled mobile data, being outside a service area, and an incorrect APN among possible causes of mobile-data problems. Samsung’s roaming troubleshooting guidance can help with the relevant settings.

- Turn Airplane mode off. In Quick Settings, confirm Airplane mode is not enabled.
- Confirm the intended line is active. Open Settings > Connections > SIM manager or the similarly named SIM-management screen. Check that the physical SIM or eSIM you intend to use is enabled. Dual-SIM controls and labels vary.
- Enable mobile data if you need internet over cellular. Data roaming and mobile data are separate settings; turning on one does not necessarily turn on the other.
- Enable data roaming for the relevant line. On many Galaxy phones, open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Data roaming and switch it on. If the roaming control is greyed out, Samsung says to activate Mobile data first. Refer to Samsung UK’s instructions if your menus differ.
Roaming can incur extra charges. Check your carrier’s current terms for your specific plan and destination before using mobile data; charges and roaming rules are not universal. Samsung’s UK support page notes that some providers have reintroduced charges in the EU, so do not assume roaming is included. Check Samsung’s roaming guidance and your carrier’s plan details.

Restart the phone and check for updates
Restart the Galaxy and give it time to register on a network. Samsung recommends restarting as a roaming troubleshooting step, and its Korea support guidance says a reboot can resolve temporary SIM-recognition problems. When practical, use Wi-Fi to check for a device software update as well. The exact update path can vary by software version; it is commonly under Settings > Software update.
Ask your carrier to confirm roaming eligibility
A phone setting cannot enable a service the carrier has not authorized. Contact your home carrier over Wi-Fi or from another phone and ask it to verify:

- International roaming is enabled for your specific line and plan.
- Your plan and handset are permitted to roam in the country you are visiting.
- Which local partner networks are supported for your line.
- There is no account-level usage block or roaming restriction.
Samsung advises customers to contact their provider if roaming still fails and specifically recommends checking that the device and plan are authorized. Samsung UK states: “If your data roaming is still not working, please contact your network provider to make sure that roaming is activated for your plan.” Do not rely on a generic carrier code, support number, partner list, or price: these depend on the carrier, account, and destination.

An APN helps the phone connect to the carrier’s mobile-data service. If calls or texts work but data does not, ask your carrier for the correct APN for your exact SIM and plan. Do not copy values from an unrelated carrier or country; Samsung notes that an incorrect APN can prevent network access and that a SIM from another operator may need that operator’s APN details.

Samsung Korea documents this reset path on supported versions: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > More > Reset to default. Menu wording may differ, and the default reset may not provide the right settings for every SIM. Consult your carrier before changing APN values. Try manual network selection only with carrier guidance
If automatic registration fails, first ask your carrier which partner networks are supported at your destination. If it confirms a partner, you can inspect Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators and select an available carrier-approved network. Samsung documents network-operator and network-mode controls, but choices depend on the device, carrier, and local network.

Do not force a particular network generation or select a network merely because it appears in the list. Samsung Korea also describes trying another supported data-network mode when the selected mode will not connect; which modes are appropriate depends on the phone and local service. Use Wi-Fi while you troubleshoot, then escalate if needed
Wi-Fi can provide internet access for messages, maps, and contacting your carrier without using mobile data. Wi-Fi Calling may offer calling over Wi-Fi only if the device, carrier, plan, and service setup support it; availability is not universal, and it should not be assumed to work abroad or be free. Samsung explains the carrier-dependent nature of Wi-Fi Calling in its mobile-network support information.

If your carrier confirms that your line and destination are supported but the phone still will not register, run the mobile-network diagnostic in Samsung Members if it is available on your Galaxy, then contact Samsung support or service. If registration succeeds in one location but not another, ask the carrier to check coverage at the affected location. Samsung Korea describes the diagnostic and these troubleshooting paths in its support guidance.
