If someone changed the email on your Rockstar Games account, check the old inbox first. Rockstar says its “Rockstar Games Email Changed” message contains an account-specific link that can roll back the change, but only while you still control the previously linked mailbox. If you cannot use that mailbox, recover it through the email provider and then contact Rockstar Support from an address that was previously linked to the account. The correct recovery path depends on which email and sign-in methods you can still access.
Choose the recovery path that matches your situation
Do not start by repeatedly trying random passwords or by paying a third-party “account recovery” service. Use the path below that fits what happened. Rockstar’s support materials do not promise a restoration time or guarantee that every locked account can be recovered, so keep your requests accurate and use an address that was actually associated with the account.

1. If the account email was changed, check the old inbox immediately
Find the rollback message
Search the inbox that was linked to your Rockstar Games account before the takeover. Look in the main inbox, spam or junk, and any routing, filtering, or forwarding folders. The message should come from noreply@rockstargames.com and have the subject “Rockstar Games Email Changed”.
Rockstar’s support article, updated July 17, 2026, says this message includes an account-specific link that reverses the email change. Open the message directly from the old mailbox and follow that link. Do not use a link copied from a forum, social-media post, or an unsolicited message; an attacker may use a look-alike page to collect your credentials.

What this step can and cannot do
- It can restore the previous email association when you still control that old mailbox.
- It does not depend on remembering the newly assigned address.
- It will not help if the old mailbox was deleted, taken over, or otherwise inaccessible until the email provider restores your access.
- A normal password reset is not a substitute for this rollback when the account email itself was changed.
If the message is missing, check spelling of the mailbox and all spam or routing folders again. Also avoid requesting many resets in quick succession; use the official process and preserve any messages that document the change.
2. Recover an inaccessible or compromised email mailbox
Work with the email provider first
When the mailbox was hacked, disabled, deleted, or protected by a 2-Step Verification method you no longer possess, Rockstar directs you to the provider that operates that mailbox. Use the provider’s own account-recovery and security procedures, not a service advertised as a Rockstar recovery agent. Regaining the mailbox may restore your ability to receive the rollback message, password resets, and security notifications.
Change the mailbox password after access returns, sign out unfamiliar sessions if the provider offers that control, and enable the provider’s 2-Step Verification. Check forwarding rules, filters, recovery addresses, and phone numbers for changes you did not make; an attacker can keep receiving Rockstar messages through a hidden forwarding rule even after you change the password.

If the provider cannot restore the mailbox
Rockstar says it may be able to restore a previously linked email address through support, but the request must be submitted using that previously linked address when possible. Rockstar also says it cannot change account details when no prior linked email exists or when the request comes from an address that was never linked to the account. Do not claim ownership through a new, unrelated address and expect it to bypass that requirement.

Prepare a concise, truthful explanation of what changed, which address was previously linked, and which recovery steps you already attempted. Submit only through Rockstar’s official support system, and keep the case number and correspondence. Rockstar’s published guidance does not establish a guaranteed response time or guarantee that support can restore every account.
3. Reset a forgotten Rockstar Games password
Use the official reset tool
If the linked email still works and the problem is a forgotten password, use Rockstar’s official Recovering Rockstar Games Account Password process. Enter the email address associated with the account and follow the message Rockstar sends. The support article was updated May 20, 2024.
- Open Rockstar’s official password-recovery page rather than a search-ad result or a link sent by another player.
- Submit the email address currently associated with the account.
- Check the inbox, spam, and junk folders for the reset message.
- Open the message only after confirming that the sender and destination are Rockstar’s genuine domains.
- Create a new, unique password that you have not used on another service.
If the reset message does not arrive
- Confirm that you entered the correct address and that the mailbox is not full.
- Search every folder, including junk, spam, promotions, and rules-based folders.
- Check whether the account email was changed; a password reset sent to the old address will not reverse that change.
- If you still control the old address but the message never appears, use Rockstar Support rather than repeatedly submitting guesses.
Rockstar’s password-reset process is for regaining password access. It should not be presented as a complete fix for an account takeover involving a changed email, unknown 2-Step Verification, or unauthorized connections.

Use Rockstar’s sign-in support ticket
If you know the password but cannot complete 2-Step Verification because you lost access to the account email, Rockstar directs you to submit an account sign-in support ticket. Provide the information requested by the form and describe the specific failure: lost email access, an altered email address, an unavailable authenticator, or another sign-in problem. Do not send passwords, QR codes, PINs, or one-time verification codes in a ticket or reply.

Use an address that was previously associated with the account whenever possible. That does not guarantee recovery, but Rockstar’s email-change guidance identifies a previously linked address as an important condition for support to consider account-detail restoration.
Do not confuse 2-Step Verification with a password reset
A password reset changes the password; it does not automatically remove a 2-Step Verification challenge or restore an email that an intruder replaced. Describe each problem separately in the support request so the agent can assess the correct recovery route.
5. Check what the intruder changed after you regain access
Once you can sign in, treat the account as untrusted until you inspect its security settings. Rockstar’s protection guidance highlights three areas that deserve a deliberate review.

- Confirm that the email address is yours and that you recognize any verification notices.
- Look for an unfamiliar recovery address or other account-detail change.
- Review recent Rockstar messages for changes you did not initiate.
Devices and sign-in activity
Check for unfamiliar device logins or sessions wherever Rockstar exposes that information. Record dates, device names, or locations that appear suspicious, then report the activity to Rockstar Support. Do not assume an unfamiliar location is harmless: mobile networks, VPNs, and travel can make legitimate sessions look different, so compare the event with your own activity before reporting it.

Third-party connections
Review connected services and remove any integration you did not authorize. A connection can provide continuing access even after you change the Rockstar password. If you recognize a service but no longer use it, removing it reduces the number of accounts that must be protected.

Set a unique Rockstar password
Choose a long password that is used nowhere else. Rockstar explicitly advises against password reuse. If the old Rockstar password was also used for email, gaming platforms, shopping, or social accounts, change those passwords too; an attacker who obtained one reused password may try it elsewhere.
Change passwords from a device you trust and keep your operating system, browser, game launcher, and security software current. If you suspect malware, disconnect the device from sensitive sign-ins until it has been checked with up-to-date antivirus or anti-malware tools.

- Verify that the linked email is yours and that you can receive messages there.
- Open Rockstar’s 2-Step Verification setup in the account-security area.
- Choose a supported mobile or browser-based authenticator.
- Follow the authenticator’s enrollment prompts and confirm the generated code in Rockstar’s setup.
- Store any recovery information offered during setup in a secure place that is separate from the game device.
Rockstar recommends using an email address you regularly use and securing that mailbox with its own 2-Step Verification. Its customer-support guidance describes 2-Step Verification as “the best way to secure your account.”
7. Recognize the signs of a second attack
Account recovery often attracts scammers because a worried player is more likely to hand over a code. Rockstar warns about several patterns:
- Impersonation of the player to support: someone claims to be you and asks an alleged agent to change account details.
- Phishing: a message pretends to be official and sends you to a fake sign-in page or attachment.
- Third-party recovery services: a person or website asks for your password, QR code, PIN, or 2-Step Verification code.
Check the sender domain and destination before entering credentials or downloading an attachment. Never post login information on forums or social media, and never share a verification code with another person—even if that person knows your username or claims to work for support. Rockstar does not establish any partner recovery service in the cited guidance.
8. Prevent another compromise
- Keep your operating system, browser, Rockstar software, and antivirus or anti-malware software updated.
- Avoid cracked games and unofficial downloads; they can contain credential-stealing malware.
- Use a unique password for Rockstar and a separate, unique password for the linked email account.
- Protect the email account with 2-Step Verification and review its forwarding and recovery settings periodically.
- Sign in only through Rockstar’s genuine website or software, not through links in unsolicited messages.
- Review third-party connections after installing a new service or game integration.
What Rockstar’s published guidance does not promise
Rockstar’s cited support pages do not publish an average response time, an account-restoration rate, or a guaranteed outcome. They also do not describe an appeal route for every possible account lock. Recovery is therefore conditional: the old-inbox rollback requires control of the previous mailbox, and a support fallback may require a request from an address that was previously linked to the account. Keep your request factual, follow the official instructions, and do not pay anyone who promises a guaranteed unlock.
