If your phone is dead or missing, you cannot count on the Google Wallet ID stored on it. Use a physical ID or another document accepted by the person or agency requesting identification. If the phone is lost, remove the Wallet credential through your Google Account; if you get a replacement phone, follow Wallet and issuer instructions to add the ID again.
What to do when you cannot access your phone
Use a physical driver’s license, state ID, passport, or other document accepted for your specific situation. Google says US driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet, as well as passport-based ID passes, are encrypted and saved locally on the device. They are not an exportable copy stored in your Google Account, so an unavailable phone means you should treat its digital ID as unavailable too. Google’s guidance for driver’s licenses and state IDs and its guidance for passport-based ID passes advise keeping physical documentation as needed.
- Phone out of battery: Present your physical ID or another accepted document. You need access to the phone and Wallet authentication to use or share the digital credential.
- Phone lost or stolen: Use another accepted ID, then delete the credential remotely using the relevant Google Account path below.
- Phone replaced: Do not assume the credential will appear automatically on the new device. Follow Wallet’s on-screen process and any instructions from the issuer.
How to remove a Wallet ID from a lost phone
Google documents different removal paths for a US driver’s license or state ID and a passport-based ID pass. These menu labels reflect Google’s guidance and may change.

- Open your Google Account.
- Go to Security & sign-in > IDs > Manage IDs.
- Select the credential, then choose Delete.

Passport-based ID pass
- Open your Google Account.
- Go to Personal info > IDs > Manage IDs.
- Select the pass, then choose Delete.

What happens when you get a replacement phone
Signing into Google Wallet on a new device does not automatically restore a mobile driver’s license, state ID, or ID pass. Google says some eligible passes can be transferred or restored using supported device-to-device or cloud methods; other items need to be added again manually. Use the available Wallet restore or transfer flow and follow the issuing authority’s instructions. The steps and eligibility depend on the credential and supported method. Google’s guidance on transferring or restoring passes explains the available options.
When a Google Wallet ID is accepted
Acceptance depends on the type of credential and the place or organization requesting it. A digital ID is not a universal substitute for physical identification, even when a particular airport or app accepts it.

US driver’s licenses and state IDs
Google says Wallet driver’s licenses and state IDs can be used at supported TSA airports and by some participating apps. For use at TSA domestic checkpoints, the Wallet credential must be REAL ID compliant, and the airport must support it. Google also says these IDs carry restrictions similar to physical credentials and may still require you to have physical identification. Check Google’s state ID guidance and the relevant airport or requester before relying on the digital version.
Passport-based ID passes
An ID pass created from a US passport can be used at supported TSA airports for domestic flights. Google says it is not an official form of identification or a replacement for physical documentation, and it may not be accepted everywhere. Check the ID pass guidance and confirm acceptance with the airport or other requester.

If your phone is offline rather than lost
For a US driver’s license or state ID in Wallet, Google says the credential becomes unavailable after the phone has been offline for more than 30 consecutive days. Reconnect the device to make it available again. This offline limit is specific to the state ID guidance; do not assume it describes passport-based ID passes. Keep your physical ID available when you may need to prove your identity. Google’s own guidance says a Wallet ID is not a replacement for physical documentation in the situations it describes. If you are unsure whether a digital credential will be accepted, ask the airport, business, agency, or other requester—and the issuing authority where appropriate—before you travel or attend an appointment.
