A new laptop that feels warm or has an audible fan is not automatically faulty: setup tasks, charging, games, and other demanding work can make it heat up and move more air. First give it clear ventilation on a hard surface, then check what is using the processor and install updates. If the fan makes a grinding, whining, or ticking sound, or stays fast during light use after basic checks, contact the laptop maker or seller using the support route and warranty terms for your model.
Why a new laptop may run hot or make fan noise
Laptops use fans to move heat away from internal components. Warmth and rushing-air noise can be normal when a computer is working hard; the relevant signs are what the laptop is doing, whether airflow is blocked, and whether the symptoms continue during light use.
Setup, updates, and demanding work
New-device setup can create temporary background activity. Microsoft says a Surface may check for and install Windows and app updates and sync email, calendar, and OneDrive content during its first 24 hours; its fans may run faster until that work finishes. This is Surface-specific guidance, not a guaranteed setup period for other laptops.
Gaming, video rendering or compression, and other compute- or graphics-heavy tasks can also increase fan activity. Apple notes that Spotlight may index content after a Mac is migrated, adding another possible source of temporary workload. On a Surface, Microsoft also notes that the device may get warmer while charging or while many tasks are running.

Placement and room temperature
A soft surface or covered vent can impede airflow. Apple and Microsoft recommend using a stable, hard, flat surface and keeping vents clear. Apple’s current Mac guidance gives an ambient operating range of 10–35°C (50–95°F); Microsoft says Surface fans may need to run more when the room is above 25°C (77°F). These are manufacturer-specific figures, not universal laptop temperature limits.
What to do, in order
- Improve ventilation. Move the laptop to a hard, stable desk or table. Remove bedding, cushions, papers, or a case if they cover an intake or exhaust vent. Do not insert anything into the vents.
- Check the workload. Note whether it is charging, installing updates, syncing or indexing after setup, gaming, rendering video, or running another demanding app. Surface owners should allow for the setup activity Microsoft describes during the first 24 hours; other devices may follow different schedules.
- Find apps using substantial processor time. On Surface, open Task Manager and sort by CPU usage; close tasks you do not need. On Mac, open Activity Monitor and look for a malfunctioning process or unexpected CPU load. Apple recommends this check when a Mac remains warm during light work or its fans run for a long time.
- Install updates. Apply operating-system updates and any driver or firmware updates recommended by the manufacturer for your exact model. Apple recommends Mac software updates. For Surface, Microsoft points owners to the Surface app and Windows Update to check driver and firmware status. Follow the maker’s official instructions rather than installing updates from an unrelated source.
- Try a quieter power setting if your model supports it. Microsoft recommends Surface’s Recommended power mode to help limit fan speed. Apple says Low Power Mode can reduce fan noise on supported Macs with active cooling, while High Power Mode can increase fan speed and noise on eligible models. These modes can change performance or power use, and availability depends on model and software. See Microsoft’s Surface fan guidance and Apple’s Mac Power Modes guidance.
- Restart and reassess. After updates and closing unnecessary tasks, restart the laptop and check whether the fan settles during light use on the clear, hard surface. A laptop that still has persistent temperature or fan problems needs model-specific support rather than a guessed repair.
What fan sounds are normal—and what are not
A smooth rushing-air sound while the computer cools itself can be normal. Apple describes it this way: “This rushing-air sound is a normal part of the cooling process.” Microsoft’s Surface guidance says, “Noises like grinding, whining, or ticking are abnormal.” The latter warning is specifically about Surface guidance; if any laptop makes an unusual mechanical noise, stop treating it as ordinary airflow and ask its manufacturer or an authorized service provider for advice.

When to contact support
Seek help if the fan remains fast during light use after ventilation, updates, and a restart; if a temperature warning appears; or if you hear grinding, whining, or ticking. For a new device, check the warranty terms and contact the appropriate manufacturer or seller support channel for your country and model. Apple advises contacting Apple or an authorized service provider for Mac operating-temperature problems that persist. Microsoft provides Surface service options through its support guidance.
Avoid opening a new laptop or attempting an unverified repair before checking support and warranty terms. Apple also cautions that third-party temperature apps do not measure the external case temperature and should not be used to diagnose possible hardware problems. Use the manufacturer’s official guidance for model-specific checks; Apple’s Mac operating-temperature guidance and fan and fan-noise guidance apply to Mac laptops, while Microsoft’s fan guidance applies to Surface devices.

Why is my new laptop fan so loud when I’m not doing much?
A background update, setup sync, indexing task, or stuck app may be using more processor time than expected. Check Task Manager on Surface or Activity Monitor on Mac, install available maker-recommended updates, then restart. If the fan remains fast during light use with vents clear, contact support rather than assuming the sound is normal.
