If your Michigan absentee ballot is late, damaged, or rejected, check the state ballot tracker and contact your city or township clerk right away. For most voters, the clerk must receive a completed ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day. Replacement ballots, signature cures, and in-person voting are different options with different deadlines, so confirm what is available for your ballot’s status and this election before acting.
First, check your ballot status

Use Michigan’s ballot tracker to check when your ballot was sent and whether the clerk has recorded receiving it. You can also sign up for email alerts.

If the tracker does not show receipt, contact your local city or township clerk. The display may not update when you submit a ballot at an early voting site or on Election Day, so a missing status alone does not establish that the ballot was lost.

When you call, explain whether the ballot was never received, is damaged, has already been returned, or was rejected for a signature. Ask which action and deadline apply to that specific status.

Find your clerk and current contact information through the Michigan Voter Information Center.
If your ballot has not arrived or is lost
Check that your voter registration and mailing address are current, then call the clerk. Michigan allows voters who never received, lost, or destroyed a ballot to request that it be spoiled and replaced, but the available process depends on how close it is to Election Day.

Ask whether a replacement can still be issued, whether you can complete one in person at the clerk’s office, or whether another in-person voting option is available.

If there is not enough time for a replacement to arrive and be returned by mail, ask about an official drop box, clerk-office submission, early voting, or Election Day voting. Use only an authorized location for your jurisdiction.

Do not assume that a replacement can still be mailed in time. Ask the clerk for the applicable cutoff and return method.
If your ballot or envelope is damaged or marked incorrectly
Do not tape, alter, or send a questionable ballot without first asking the clerk what to do. Michigan’s voter guidance says that if you make a mistake while completing an absentee ballot, you must request a new ballot from your local clerk.
For physical damage, describe exactly what is affected—the ballot, secrecy sleeve, return envelope, or signature area. Michigan’s public guidance does not give one repair procedure for every kind of damage, so ask the clerk whether to return or spoil the ballot and how to get a replacement. Check the timing before traveling or mailing anything.

If your ballot was rejected for a signature
A missing or non-matching signature on the return envelope can cause a ballot to be rejected. Michigan says a ballot rejected because of a signature will not be counted until the issue is resolved.
Resolve the signature issue
Michigan’s signature cure guidance says you may return the official Absent Voter Ballot Signature Cure Form by email, mail, or in person by 5 p.m. on the Friday after Election Day. Use the current form and follow its instructions; contact your clerk promptly if you need help confirming what to submit.
Do not confuse a cure with a replacement
If you want to spoil a returned ballot and have a new one issued because of a signature problem, Michigan’s guidance says the written request must reach the clerk by 5 p.m. on the second Friday before Election Day. That deadline is earlier than the signature-cure deadline. Ask the clerk which route applies to your notice and election.

For most Michigan voters, the clerk must receive the ballot by 8 p.m. on Election Day; a postmark by Election Day is not enough under the ordinary rule. Michigan lists secure drop boxes, clerk offices, and in-person submission options, but locations and eligibility depend on the jurisdiction and election. Check the state’s absentee-voting instructions and confirm the assigned drop box and deadline with your clerk rather than using a drop box from another jurisdiction.

If you are considering voting in person, first ask the clerk what your ballot status means for your eligibility. Michigan allows voters whose absentee ballot has not already been returned to use early voting or their Election Day polling place, subject to official procedures. A ballot already inserted into an early voting tabulator cannot be changed.

These deadlines are tied to the election date. Confirm the current instructions with your clerk rather than calculating a calendar date from a relative deadline.
