If your laptop says it is charging slowly—or loses battery while plugged in—first check that the USB-C port supports charging, then verify the power available from the charger’s specific port and the cable. Unplug the charger’s other devices and test it directly in the laptop. A USB-C plug or a charger’s headline total wattage alone does not guarantee enough power for your model.

Why a multiport USB-C charger may charge a laptop slowly

Charging depends on the laptop, the port, the charger and the cable working together. A USB-C connector fitting the laptop does not prove that the port accepts power, or that the connected charger and cable can supply the power the laptop needs. Microsoft lists an insufficient or incompatible charger, a port that does not charge the PC, and an insufficient cable among possible causes of slow charging or battery drain while plugged in (Microsoft’s slow-charging guidance).

With a multiport charger, the total printed on the unit may not be available from the port connected to the laptop. When other devices are connected, the charger may allocate or reduce output across ports. MSI advises checking the output rating for the individual port and notes that simultaneous use can reduce actual output below the labeled wattage (MSI’s charging guidance). A hub or dock in the path can impose another limit; Microsoft and Dell both identify certain hub or dock connections as possible causes of slow or failed charging (Microsoft USB-C troubleshooting; Dell DA305 and DA310 guidance).

Workload and temperature matter too. A laptop using substantial power may charge slowly because it is consuming energy as it runs; high battery temperature can also limit or stop charging. Microsoft suggests charging while asleep or powered off as a way to speed charging, while Huawei describes high power use and battery temperature as factors (Huawei charging guidance).

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Confirm the laptop’s charging port and required input. Look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s support site or in its manual. Check which USB-C port accepts charging and the recommended adapter wattage or input. Microsoft advises connecting to the laptop’s USB-C charging port, and ASUS directs users to check the recommended wattage for their model (Microsoft; ASUS slow-charger guidance).
  2. Disconnect other devices from the charger. Leave only the laptop connected, then see whether charging improves. Check the charger’s documentation for the output on the particular port you are using, both alone and in the connected-device configuration you normally use. Do not treat the charger’s combined multiport total as the laptop port’s output.
  3. Check the cable’s power rating. Make sure the cable is rated to carry the power required by the laptop and supplied by the charger. A USB-C plug by itself does not establish the cable’s power capability. Microsoft and MSI both identify the cable as part of the compatibility check (Microsoft; MSI).
  4. Bypass accessories. Connect the charger directly to the laptop’s charging port, without a hub, dock or pass-through adapter. If direct connection fixes the issue, the accessory or its charging path may be the bottleneck.
  5. Reduce power use and check temperature. Close demanding tasks and test while the laptop is asleep or powered off. If the laptop is hot, let it cool and follow the manufacturer’s battery-temperature guidance.
  6. Use model-specific support if the warning remains. If the laptop still reports “Slow Charger” or charges poorly with a compatible charger and cable connected directly, consult the manufacturer. Some models use proprietary charging behavior, and the required input cannot be inferred from the connector alone.

How to choose a replacement charger or cable

Compare the complete charging path rather than shopping by the charger’s largest printed number. Before replacing anything, establish the laptop’s requirements for its exact model, then match the charger port, cable and any protocol requirements to them.

What to compare What to verify
Laptop Whether the USB-C port supports charging, the required input and any manufacturer-specific charging requirement. Check the exact model’s documentation.
Charger The output from the individual port used for the laptop, and how that output changes when other ports are occupied.
Cable That its rated power is sufficient for the laptop and charger combination.
Charging path Whether a hub, dock or pass-through adapter sits between the charger and laptop; test direct connection first.

Microsoft describes USB-C charging up to 5 V at 3 A (15 W) as a general capability and contrasts it with higher power levels available through USB Power Delivery when the laptop, charger and cable support the required standards and power (Microsoft’s explanation). That figure is not a recommended wattage for every laptop. Use the model’s specification instead; ASUS also notes that a slow-charger alert can appear when USB-C wattage is below the recommended AC-adapter wattage (ASUS).
